  • Bside Incoming: Gene Hunt
    Bside Incoming: Gene Hunt
This man should need no introduction... he's one of Chicago’s finest, which, let’s be honest is saying something and it’s no exaggeration to say that he is a legendary icon and pioneer of house music… Gene Hunt.
With a fashion designer for a mother, one grandfather being a jazz musician, and the other a DJ, Gene certainly has creativity flowing through his veins. So, from the age of thirteen he pursued his passion for music by taking to the decks, and only a few years later he was already rising through the ranks of Chicago’s thriving underground House scene. It was none other than Li'l Louis who gave him his first shot at the legendary Warehouse club, with strong support from Frankie Knuckles, while it was Ron Hardy that really took him under his wing.
With constant pressure from the three kings of Chicago it wasn’t long before the apprentice became a master of his craft, and cemented himself as a pillar of the scene at Warehouse/Music Box. The club attributed to the creation of House music and the space that would help define the hedonistic escapism of dance music across the world. The enchanting music of Gene and Ron at Music Box inspired a generation in Chicago, not least Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson who brought them Strings of Life in 1987.
After a short Hip-Hop hiatus in California producing rap music with Bone Thugs N Harmony and Snoop Dogg, he returned to House music to nourish the fresh wave of talented artists and continue his legacy through DJing and an ever growing love of music production.
Few have done more in the service of dance music, so it is such a privilege to have an insight into the record collection of a true great. His personal favourites, and most cherished records… His hottest ‘jams’, ‘some real uncut Marvin Gaye’, and a ‘seriously rare’ Yoko Ono dub plate.

  • Bside Incoming: Shy One
    Bside Incoming: Shy One
This instalment of the Bside Incoming series comes from London. A DJ and Producer of equally impressive measure, affiliated to the Touching Bass and BBZ collectives, a regular on Balamii Radio, and a truly passionate collector with a deep, deep knowledge of music. It’s a pleasure to welcome… Shy One.
From DJing on community radio at the age of 14 and warming up for her father, to cementing herself as a main player on line-ups at incredible parties across London and beyond, she already has an unquestionable pedigree behind the decks.
Her productions are always keen to keep pace with the capital’s thriving grime scene, but her tracks always stand out from the crowd and her beats are authentic to her many musical influences, this episode being testament to that wide array of inspiration.
Her tastes glide across styles, while always sticking to her own sound: the hypnotic rhythms and irresistible broken beats that have deeply inspired her, and translated through to her outstanding discography.
What genre is her music? Who cares? Shy One knows what she loves, and we love it too!
Check out her collaboration with Josey Rebelle for her album from last year: https://soundcloud.com/timsweeney/shy-one-route-ii-romeos
Come on, take a glimpse into the impressive record collection of Shy One. Hear the records that mean the most to her, what makes her tick, how she relaxes, and a little philosophy behind her vinyl collecting and production styles. Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop, Grime, House and everything in between.

  • Bside Incoming: Posture
    Bside Incoming: Posture
This episode comes from yet another incredible artist from down-under. A stalwart of Sydney’s underground scene, an avid record collector, and a calming presence for our lockdown lives. The midweek instalment of the Bside Podcast is brought to you by Posture!
He’s a co-owner of Velodrome recordings, a party series and record label which although in it’s infancy shows great promise. Its releases include ‘Zoom Dates’ an energetic electro single from the man himself, as well as Unpin’s crazy Soy Piccolo EP. His service to Sydney also includes a fortnightly appearance on Nomad Radio and the creation of some of the city's most impressive parties, by placing local talent at the forefront: Andy Garvey, Tiago, Turner Street Sound and many more.
It was a pleasure to take a peak into Posture’s record collection, to have such a knowledgable selector transport us to his homeland through the unparalleled emotional power of music. A special mention to the barren and beautiful expanses of Australia evoked by Waak Waak Djungi with an ingenious/electronic hybrid. Truly incredible!
The whole episode is tinted with a soothing mood offset by a nervous energy that rings throughout, calming yet constantly engaging. The mixtape builds so nicely, that by the time we reach the heavy techno of Illian Tape or Unpin's mad jungle track, it seems almost as relaxing as the opening ambiance of the episode.
We look forward to Posture’s upcoming EP on Velodrome,
but until then, enjoy a tour through the Bside of his incredible record collection.

  • The Bside Of... Toy Tonics
    The Bside of... Toy Tonics
This is one of those episodes that we’ve been excited to bring you for a while now!
“The Bside of…” mixtapes so far have proven to be up there with our best and this one is certainly no different.
We are transporting you to Germany to place you in the very capable hands of co-founder Kapote, he stands out as a brilliant producer and selector in his own right so it’s a privilege to have him guide us through a playlist of his very own favourites from The Bside of… Toy Tonics!!!
Since 2015 Toy Tonics have been breathing a breath of fresh air into soul and disco, with their tasteful edits and carefully curated new productions making them possibly the hottest record label to recently emerge from Germany. Their style is an infectious fun that can explode into euphoric joy on any dance floor across the world.
Beyond their releases they have proven themselves as one of Europe’s best parties, with the Toy Tonics Jam series inviting many of the label's favourite artists to do their thing at the best clubs across the continent.
Toy Tonics now has over 100 releases, EPs, Albums, Compilation Series, Edits and Original Productions. They are as prolific as they are consistently excellent, and they always aim to push the boundaries of “new house and futuristic electronic dance music”.
The Toy Tonics roster includes founders Munk and Kapote, COEO, Whitesquare, Blackloops, PBR Streetgang, Demuja, Felipe Gordon, FYI Chris, Dimitri from Paris, Phenomenal Handclap Band, not to mention some previous guests Rhode & Brown, and Jad & The. Not bad huh!
The most recent release certainly lives up to the high expectations that TT sets itself: Mushroom House Vol.1 which is compiled by our very own Bside host Kapote.
Check it out on their website: https://www.toytonics.de/2020/11/20/kapote-pres-mushroom-house-vol-1-toyt115/
The Toy Tonics team also let us in on some in info and snippets of their first release of 2021... Boy are we excited for it! We can tell you that it is Cody Curry's first solo EP on Toy Tonics, and is titled 'Moves EP', featuring Eliza Rose on the vocals on the main track. Each track sounds beautiful, filled with 'atmospheric garage-y broken beat territory as an ode to his London roots. Rich chords, catchy hooks and hard hitting rhythms.' They also told us that Joel Holmes and Athlete Whippet are in line for the next Toy Tonics releases in the coming months...

Bside Incoming: Redleg On A Roll
Once again we are blown away by the quality of selectors coming out of Amsterdam. I guess it should be little surprise considering the thriving scene of musicians in the city but we are lucky enough to have another top class episode coming from the Dutch contingent. This time from Redleg On A Roll.
He is a "Record shaker, edit maker, bellydance faker and mix series baker”. Bside Incoming: Rhode & Brown
First of all, happy New year from us at Bside! We have a lot up our sleeve for the year, first to note we have now moved to 2 shows a week - releasing on both a Sunday and now a Wednesday.
We welcome 2021 with more German selectors to the Bside Incoming Podcast series which is attracting international artists of an ever higher calibre. Munich based Friedrich Trede and Stephan Braun are friends, avid record collectors, creative producers, record label owners (Slam City Jams) and impressive DJs. Their artistic lives collided in 2010 and the world has since been lucky enough to have: Rhode & Brown.
Renowned for house music, but infused with a multitude of influences ranging from soul music to downtempo electro. Their style is a warm and inviting energy that proves to be irresistible. No wonder then that their Bside selection is as impressive as everything else they’ve produced, be it DJ sets or an increasing range of amazing music.
They have released an array of music on Toy Tonics, Permanent Vacation, Shall Not Fade and their own Slam City Jams. Featuring also as part of the Toy Tonics Jams events across Europe alongside some of the usual suspects: Kapote, COEO and other artists from the label.

  • Bside Incoming: Hannah D
    Bside Incoming: Hannah D
We are hoping you had a very Merry Christmas and that you’re not missing a big festive party too much, because this week’s guest has really got us itching to be back on the dance floor. She’s a top class selector with a real passion for her local scene, born into a musical family with strong early influences, and always pushing herself down new and exciting avenues on her journey of musical discovery. We proudly present Hannah D.
With a musical passion pumping through her veins Hannah is a longtime supporter of her thriving local music scene in Brisbane. From enthusiastic punter, to music journalist with 6AM AT THE GARAGE and the now-defunct Pulse Radio. She co-founded The Space Between Us with Emma Stevenson to promote local talent and friends from the scene before evolving the project into a well respected record label and artist management company.
"The signing of all local acts did not happen consciously whatsoever - it came about purely from not feeling the need to branch further afield to hear great music” - Hannah D
After several years of promoting the talent of her friends and putting the local artists of Brisbane onto the map, they returned the favour by inviting her to play the supporting slot with DJ Slyngshot… it must have gone well because she never looked back and is now considered up their with the city’s best, having shared line-ups with the likes of Floating Points, Legowelt, Francis Inferno Orchestra, Octo Octa, Eris Drew and Hunee.
This one is a very welcome return to an episode of strictly electronica, getting things moving with some italo and hip house, before settling in with progressive hypnotic house and extraterrestrial electro breaks.
    Enjoy!

  • Bside Incoming: Marcel Vogel
    Bside Incoming: Marcel Vogel
This weeks episode is a big one, EPISODE 75! And we’re ecstatic to celebrate with an incredibly talented DJ and devoted record collector. A man with a reputation for having impeccable taste and enchanting delivery: Marcel Vogel.
The native German moved to Amsterdam in the pursuit of Audio Engineering mastery and founded two record labels on his journey: Lumberjacks in Hell followed by Intimate friends, closely connected yet stylistically distinct projects, projects that house some incredible artists, Karizma, Soulphiction, Eddie C and Jamie 3:26… to name just a handful.
He was a hip-hop collector before becoming a house selector, and then found a soulful disco groove from which Lumberjacks in Hell was born. His style is defined by an eclecticism that can light up any dance floor. Marcel threw parties with the likes of Axel Roboom back in the Berlin days, but more recently under the name of Cheetah amongst the vibrant nightlife of the Dutch capital.
Almost ten years would pass upon an increasingly remarkable DJ career, before the landmark in a lifelong musical exploration of his first production. The Bside of which is a remix from one of our very own guests, a downtempo disco trance from Marcel Vogel and Ruf Dug:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TL2ZjqTFAI&feature=emb_logo
It would be hard to pin down a genre, mood or even style to this episode but it never strays from the authentic atmosphere that surrounds Marcel Vogel. The passion for music is evident and we’re lucky enough to grab a glimpse of his incredible record collection.

  • Bside Incoming: Sampology
    Bside Incoming: Sampology
Monthly radio host on the ever impressive WorldWideFM, purveyor of great music, a richly creative producer, and now the boss of his very own Middle Name Records… we gladly present you one of Brisbane’s very best… Sampology.
Bursting through into the musical limelight with the release of his highly acclaimed Mt. Glorious EP in 2018, Samplogy’s has declared himself to be up there with the best in Australia’s thriving scene.
He followed this success up with a collaborative project intended as a one off, but such a triumph was the release and its subsequent tour that Middle Name Dance Band have released a second volume this spring. Rather than starting afresh under a new name, the project continues under its original title but injected with a new lease of life with the introduction of new artists to aid Sampology in his journey to create new and exciting music.
Certainly worth a listen if your enjoying Sampology’s Bside Incoming episode… grab yourself a copy on bandcamp:
    https://middlenamedanceband.bandcamp.com/album/middle-name-dance-tracks-vol-2
This episode is an exploration of the broken beat and percussive house rhythms that he has become so renowned for, not limiting himself to genre yet never straying too far from his own authentic sound. Soul, house, dub, breakbeat, and plenty of funky sunny beats from the Brisbane man. We can almost feel that Southern Hemisphere summer parting our wintery overcast as the good times break through!
    Enjoy!

    Bside Incoming: The Mole
This week's episode of Bside Incoming has been placed in the reliable hands of Canadian DJ and Producer, avid collector of records, label boss of Maybe Tomorrow, and man of musical passion: Colin de la Plante AKA The Mole.
Often to be found digging blindly into uncharted subterranean regions on the impassioned pursuit of novel sounds, The Mole endeavours to return to the surface with buried treasures for the keen and willing ears of his audience. Beyond his reputation as a top class live act with an infectious enthusiasm behind the decks, there is much to be said for his prowess as a producer, notably his involvement with Units & Measurements, The Modern Deep Left Quartet, and most recently with his Deadbeat Meets the Mole release on BLKRTZ.
Go check out his discogs/bandcamp pages for more:
    https://themole.bandcamp.com/
    https://www.discogs.com/artist/111868-The-Mole

Starting out with a focus on slow burning percussion, and left field jazz, before picking up the pace with some smooth electronica, feel good funky beats and some powerful disco. A healthy dose of legendary artists: Patrick Adams, Billy Preston, Marvin Gaye and Hamilton Bohannon; lightly sprinkled with soulful global sounds throughout and an excellent history lesson for each record.
Ever tasteful in his selection, and always keeping us on our toes… The Mole keeps on giving!
