Bisde Incoming: Bside Tutu Amuse

Bside is Back with a bang after a 2 month silecnce. Spreading our wings in search of the finest selectors, our team has relocated to London, New Zealand, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Boy are we happy to be back.

We proudly present to you our 157'th show, an episode hosted by guitarist, vocalist and actor Rosa Landers and drummer, composer, vocalist and producer Janek van Laak: Better known together as Tutu Amuse!

The Berlin based duo spent lockdown in the city’s infamous Marzahn tower block, together crafting music that would become their debut album: Two To Amuse. This follows from a series of singles that demonstrate Rosa and Janek’s eclectic taste and influence, as well as the impressive diversity of their musical talents.

This episode we give a warm welcome to an increasingly acclaimed DJ who features regularly on Rinse FM and Netil, has released tracks on Naive, Love on the Rocks, and Dark Entries, as well as gracing the decks at such renowned venues as Wilde Renate, KALT, Wide Awake, Field Day, and Glastonbury: it’s https://soundcloud.com/e_l_l_e_s.

Her career is shaped by the earliest creative endeavours crafting mixtapes from tracks recorded from the radio, drawing, and customising clothes; her formative years of DJ inspiration at London’s legendary queer parties and warehouse raves; and a touching online relationship with Naive label boss Violet which has flourished into a wide ranging but consistently excellent array of productions on the Portuguese record label.

With her sets, productions, and remixes ranging from dance floor bangers to ambient soundscapes, it’s certainly no surprise that her episode of Bside would take us through her wide taste. Expect acid techno, traditional Irish folk, soft rock, euphoric house, wonky italo and everything in between.

Bside Incoming: Laurence Guy & Miller Blue

For our 155th episode we welcome a joint show of Laurence Guy and Miller Blue. The pair have joined together to create the 'My Heart Still Leans On You' EP which will be released on the label Shall Not Fade on the 23rd of June.

Laurence Guy is an incredibly talented producer with an array of top tier releases. His debut album in 2017 on Church Records 'Saw You For The First Time' undoubtedly gripped any lovers of house music's attention. Since then he has released a series of cherished EPs on various labels, with this upcoming one with Miller Blue being his 5 appearance on Shall Not Fade. On top of his productions, Laurence is a passionate digger and skilled selector who has blessed dance-floors around the world with his underground house sounds. We particularly enjoy his Rinse FM shows where he smoothly jumps between genres from ambient, classical, house DnB to name a few. For their Bside podcast they opt to record half an hour separately. Laurence kicks things off showcasing his diverse taste in music dipping into some classic funk, a favourite self produced B-side, DnB, and 'the best deep house track in existence'. Miller follows with a mixture of his taste in records, displaying his soulful and jazzy sounds along with some club ready house.

Miller Blue - “‘My Heart Still Leans On You’ talks about the painful and often confusing experience of still being attached to someone that you’ve cut ties with. Although it may have been for the best, the heart doesn’t get to choose who it connects with and letting go can be a very difficult process."

Laurence Guy - “Miller has an uncanny ability to write lyrics that reflect my own feelings at different times that I can’t find my own words for. ‘My Heart Still Leans on You’ is a perfect example of this and it’s even more poignant to me now than it was when he first wrote it.

We’re pleased to present our latest guest: a beat making artist and Lemon Lounge sound system member from London by the name of Romaal Kultan.

His exploration of jungle, hip-hop, broken beats and house music began in 2014, he’s since flourished into an incredible selector and producer in his own right with releases on YAM Records, Touching Bass, Tiff's Joints, Dr Banana, and the release of his very own record label, Personal Discs.

His 2 hour episode of the Bside podcast takes us on a journey through his developing taste in music, from the funky drum and bass rollers where it all began, through to the scintillating house beats he’s more recently renowned for.

Bside Incoming: Athlete Whippet

This time we invite an exciting Berlin based duo behind the Bside turntables to walk us through some of their most treasured records. With two releases on Toy Tonics, a record under past guests Rhythm Section, as well as showcasing music from artists such as Ross From Friends, Baltra and Seb Wildblood on their own Squareglass imprint, we are certainly excited to bring you an episode from such impeccable selectors: Athlete Whippet.

The duo met at London’s Goldsmiths, with a passion for music bringing them together. One now works at !K7, the other developing live sets for the likes of Priya Ragu, Berwyn, and Lapsley; their spare time is spent crafting incredible music with a live bass, guitar, piano, and some hardware synths and samples.

Their Bside selections pay tribute to their influences and musical connections; records on Tartelet, Rhythm Section and Toy Tonics, incredible artists like Max Graef, Paula Tape, Jitwam, and COEO all making the cut. Expect a reflection of their own artistic output which always straddles the line between dancefloor fun and soothing sounds.

In episode #152 we welcome Sunni D!

Beginning his journey on the airwaves of local radio stations, Daniel has now become an exciting prospect within the London circuit, having performed at venues such as Spiritland and booked to play under the likes of John Morales and Kirollus in early June.

Nowadays, he is no stranger to the radio airwaves, busying himself by backpacking around his hometown armed and ready with the finest feel-good selections for his respective monthly shows on LooseFM, Voices Radio and Brixton Radio.

Daniel’s reverence for uplifting dance music encompasses retro disco, funk and soul from all corners of the globe, persistently delving into genres such as zouk, soca, brazilian and rare disco, as well as the more hard-hitting sounds of Brazilian house and UK breakbeat.

Expect an eclectic mix of goodies this episode, starting off with some soothing soul and grooves from across the African and South American continents, then moving all the way through to early 2000s Brazilian house and 90s breakbeat, and finally finishing off on a euphoric high with some blissful funk and soul classics.

We’re thrilled to present one of the most exciting names in Brazil, and, increasingly worldwide. A true selector, that prides herself in deep musical research and showing the world incredible music, new and old: Barbara Boeing.

Barbara has transformed the music scene of hometown of Curitiba with her Alter Disco nights; breaking the social paradigms and encouraging freedom of expression on the dance floor and beyond. Her prowess behind the decks has allowed her to share her musical passion with European audiences, notably a Boiler Room debut at Nuits Sonores and joyful set at Lente Kabinet.

Barbara Boeing’s Bside exemplifies her rising notoriety; with tasteful selections spanning from the deep and moody, to the synth disco, to the signature sunny sounds of Brazil.

Bside Incoming: SOS Music (150th show!)

Wow, what a feeling uploading show #150! This time we welcome an exciting DJ/Producer duo to the Bside Podcast. As well as being top class DJs in their own right, Maddy and Tottie have co-founded and produced on a record label under their own alias: SOS Music.

The label seeks to amplify the under-represented in the industry, allowing women and gender minorities to grow as artists; their debut compilation featured some amazing artists such as rRoxymoore, Umfang, and Nightwave. The follow up is equally sure to impress with the likes of Yazuss (of the 6 Figure Gang), Korean Breakthrough artist Closet-Yi, Baby T (B.traits new alias), and multi-instrumentalist Hinako Omori.

True to form, SOS Music guide us through the very best of their Bside while using the opportunity to show of the most impressive female producers around: Expect a journey from the smooth side of house music through to the late night wobblers, soothing and soulful through to the hard hitting broken beats, and all the way back.

This episode invites us into the record bag of a rising ‘Star’ in the UK’s House and Techno scene. You can find her spreading the love for dance music across London, at festivals, internationally, and weekly on her Foundation FM residency. It’s Helena Star.

Helena is certainly humble about the quantity of vinyl in her possession, but we’re sure we’ve been given an insight into the foundation of an almighty collection from the larger than life London DJ. Bside Incoming: Jerome Hill

We’ve been incredibly excited to share this one with you all, an episode from a DJ who truly embodies the life and soul of dance music and rave culture: Jerome Hill

Jerome earned his stripes in London’s illegal rave scene in the 90s, with a hands on mixing style full of fast paced transitions, scratching, and some unexpected gems scattered across his sets.

His prowess behind the decks, and his management of many record labels (Don’t (est. 2000), Super Rhythm Trax, Bleeper, Fat Hop and Hornsey Hardcore) has often left his own productions overlooked by many. Discerning selectors, however, have long supported his tracks, making them a feature in the sets of Aphex Twin, Helena Hauf, Ben Sims, Craig Richards and so many more.

For this episode, we invite you to step into Jerome Hill’s Bside Bazaar, an array of oddities and collectible sounds, free from the bounds of genre, forever intriguing selections from the flip side.
