  • The Nature of the Journey with Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz

    The Nature of the Journey

    1. “When the student is ready the teacher will appear”–Tao Te Ching
    2. When we put it all together it might seem like the stages flow easily from one to the next with each Archetype showing up in perfect order. Thinking of the hero moving through the three stages of preparation, journey and return while being aided by twelve in order is useful as a teaching tool, the reality in most cases is that growth really doesn’t happen in such a defined, linear way. Our guides (each Archetype) come to us when they (and at some level) when we choose.
    3. The pattern of the journey ends up being more like a spiral instead of a linear map. The final stage of the journey, characterized by the Archetype of the Fool ends up connecting with the first Archetype, the Innocent, but at a higher level than before. This time the Innocent is wiser about life.
    4. On the spiraling hero’s journey, we may encounter each Archetype many times, and in the process gain new gifts at a higher or deeper level of development.
    5. Each encounter creates a new neural pathway in the brain and this allows us to transform while making the journey meaningful. When we experience reality, we create a net to hold that reality and can take the experience and make meaning of it. The Archetypes we have not yet encountered are like holes in a net. The experiences that we have little or no way of understanding simply pass through the holes.

  • Recognizing Shadow Forms Along the Hero’s Journey with Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz

E9 Recognizing Shadow Forms Along the Hero’s Journey |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz “Wars and temper tantrums are the makeshifts of ignorance; regrets are illuminations that come too late.”― Joseph Campbell. All of the 12 Archetypes are present in every one of us but sometimes we push them down and do not allow them to express themselves in our lives. This activates the negative forms of the Archetypes. When we feel the negative forms of the Archetypes show up in our lives, we tend to want to push them down further because we are afraid they might be opening the door to monsters. Often, the negative forms are activated by all of the “shoulds” and “should nots” of our lives. Every “should” and “should not” that we experience becomes a scale on our dragon. Some people who have not allowed many, if any, of the Archetypes into their lives see both their inner and outer world filled with dragons - and the world seems to be a very frightening place. The way to overcome this is to educate the Ego and in time allow some of the more positive sides of the Archetypes into your daily living. When we feel awful, we are stuck expressing an Archetype in its negative form. To feel empowered again, we need to simply take a closer look at this Archetype and refuse to let it control us. But we can only do this when we honor the Archetype by expressing it in some way. What most people don’t realize is that each dragon is hiding a treasure. When we make peace with the dragon, the treasure is given to us.

  • The Shadow Side of Hero’s Journey Archetypes with Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz

E10 The Shadow Side of Hero’s Journey Archetypes |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz “He must put aside his pride, his virtue, beauty and life and bow or submit to the absolutely intolerable.”― Joseph Campbell. In episode 9 we explored the Shadow Forms of the Guides. When we repress any of the Archetypes they tend to show up in shadow form. In this episode we will learn what behavior the Shadow Sides of the Archetypes reveal. Early on in the journey we might try to slay the dragons. Really what needs to happen is we need to reframe the negative talk and behavior in order to activate the positive side of the Archetype. In the Preparation Stage the four Archetypes are Innocent, Orphan, Warrior, and Caregiver. This is what their Shadow Forms reveal: Innocent - Is in denial or seeking rescue. You may be hurting yourself or others but you don’t acknowledge it. You might also be hurt but you repress that as well. Orphan - Is victimized and blames their incompetence, irresponsibility or predatory behavior on others or expects special treatment or exemption from life because they have be so victimized or fragile. We attack people who are trying to help us, harming them and ourselves or we may just become dysfunctional. Warrior - Is the villain who uses Warrior skills for personal gain without thoughts of morality, ethics or the good of the whole. It activates in our lives anytime we compromise our principles in order to compete, win or get our own way. Caregiver - Is the suffering martyr who controls others by making them feel guilty. It is seen in all manipulative behavior to control or or smother. In the Journey Stage the four Archetypes are Seeker, Destroyer, Lover and Creator. This is what their Shadow Forms reveal: Seeker - Is the perfectionist, always striving to measure up to an impossible goal or to find the “right” solution. We see this in people who are continually focused on self improvement. Destroyer - Includes ALL self-destructive behaviors including addictions, compulsions, or activities that undermine intimacy, career success or self esteem - and all behaviors that have a destructive effect on others. Lover - Includes anyone who is unable to say no when passion calls or is totally destroyed when a relationship ends. Creator - Is an obsessive need to create without being able to act on anything fully. This also shows up as workaholism. In the Return Stage the four Archetypes are Ruler, Magician, Sage and Fool. This is what their Shadow Forms reveal: Ruler - Insists on getting their own way and remain in control. We often see this when people are in positions of authority. Magician - Happens any time we diminish ourselves or others and lower our self esteem. It can also make us or others ill through negative thoughts and actions. Sage - Is cold, irrational, heartless, dogmatic, pompous - always evaluating and saying we or they are not good enough. Fool - No dignity or self control regarding urges of the body.

  • Addictions & Compulsions on The Hero’s Journey with Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz

E11 Addictions & Compulsions on The Hero’s Journey |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz “Tragedy is an unfinished comedy.”― Joseph Campbell. We can become addicted to behaviors and thought patterns as well as to substances. Any time an Archetype possesses us, the result is addictive or compulsive tendencies. What behavior a person is addicted to depends on which Archetype is dominant, but all of them limit our lives. The fewer Archetypes active in their positive form in our lives, the more prone we are to addictiveness. The following lists behaviors and attitudes that we can become addicted or attached to when we are possessed by the corresponding Archetype (listed as Archetype - Addictive Quality - Addiction) Innocent Denial Consumerism/sugar/cheerfulness Orphan Cynicism Powerlessness/worrying Warrior Stoicism Achievement/success Caregiver Rescuing Caretaking/co-depencence Seeker Self-centeredness Independence/perfection Destroyer Self-destructiveness Suidide/self-destructive habits Lover Intimacy problems Relationships/sex Creator Obsessiveness Work/creativity Ruler High control needs Control/codependence Magician Dishonesty(image) Power/hallucinogenic drugs/marijuana Sage Judgmentalism Being right/tranquilizers Fool Inebriation Excitement/cocaine/alcohol

  • Preparation For Your Hero’s Journey |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz S1O E5 Preparation For Your Hero’s Journey |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz

“If you’re going to have a story, have a big story.”– Joseph Campbell The first four Archetypes ( Innocent, Orphan, Warrior and Caregiver) help us prepare for the journey. We start the journey as the Innocent and learn optimism and trust. At some point there is a “fall” and we become Orphans who feel disappointed, abandoned and betrayed by life (especially the people who were supposed to care for us) but teach us to care for ourselves and to stop relying on other people. Ironically, the orphan feels so powerless and helpless that its best strategy for survival is to find others to provide mutual support. The Warrior helps us learn to set goals and develop strategies to achieve them like courage and discipline. Eventually the Caregiver becomes active we learn to take care of others and eventually how to take care of ourselves as well. The four attributes of these Archetypes: Basic optimism, the capacity to band together for support, the courage to fight for yourself and others and compassion to care for yourself and others provide the basic skills for living in society. But if this is all we can do we will feel unsatisfied with our lives, even though we have learned what is necessary to be both moral and successful in the world.

  • The “Journey” Stage of Hero’s Journey |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz

E6 The “Journey” Stage of Hero’s Journey |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz “Every time you are willing to say “Yes” to everything on your path, you express the hero inside of you.” --Maria Nemeth At some point we begin to want more and yearn for something beyond ourselves. This activates the Seeker who begins the search for meaning and purpose so we answer the call to begin the journey. Once we embark on the journey, we encounter some sort of suffering. The Destroyer takes away things that seemed essential to our lives. This is an initiation through suffering but it also activates the Lover as we find ourselves in love with people, causes, places and work. This love is so strong it requires commitment and we are no longer free. The treasure that emerges out of this encounter with the Destroyer or death and Love is the birth of our true self. The Creator helps us begin to express this self in the world and prepares us to return back to our starting place to share our transformation. These four abilities, to strive, to let go, to love and to create, teach us the basic process of dying to the old self and giving birth to the new. The process prepares us to return to the “kingdom” and change our lives.

  • The “Return” Stage of Your Hero’s Journey |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz

“Sometimes a journey is not about the traveler. It is not about a destination. It is about the bringing together of worlds. It is about lighting a path.” --Thomas Lloyd Qualls When we return, we realize we are now the Rulers of our “kingdoms.” At first we might be disappointed in the state of things. Others have not changed and we see the difference. But as we act on our new wisdom and begin sharing it with others we begin to see their lives change as well. As the Magician is activated in our lives we get really good at healing and transforming ourselves and others and everyone benefits from this continual renewal. But we will never be truly satisfied, completely fulfilled or happy until we face our own perceptions. The Sage helps us know what truth really is. As we learn to accept our perceptions and paradigms and let go of illusions and petty desires we are able to reach a state of nonattachment and experience true freedom. Only when we have reached true freedom can the Fool teach us how to live joyously in the moment without worrying about tomorrow. The final set of attainments include taking responsibility for our lives, transforming and healing ourselves and others, nonattachment and a commitment to truth and the capacity for joy and spontaneity. This is our reward for the journey.

E4 Recognizing Guides Along Your Hero’s Journey |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, Many are strong at the broken places”.------Ernest Hemingway Archetypes are our inner guides and come into our lives to bring a task, a lesson and ultimately a gift. Although we are heroes at every stage of the journey, how we define and experience heroism is affected by which guide of the 12 archetypes is most active in our lives, culturally and individually. Each of the 12 archetypes is both a guide on the journey and a stage within it. When one or more archetypes are not active in our lives we skip steps. For example, if we have no Warrior, we will fail to develop a plan for dealing with problems. If we have no Sage, we may neglect to gain the lesson from the situation. Or we might express the archetypes in their shadow form where instead of making a plan, we blame others. Instead of learning the lesson of the situation, we judge ourselves or others.

E2 Hero’s Journey Defined |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz “We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey—- Kenji Miyaz Heroism is about having the courage to act on a vision and take steps out of our comfort zone to begin a new journey. Along the way we will slay dragons, rescue victims in distress and find and bring back treasures. At the end of the journey is a happy ending waiting for us to share with others. Spoiler Alert! The happy ending is usually short-lived. As soon as we return from one journey, we enter a new phase in our lives and immediately start the next journey. The Hero’s journey is not linear, it’s spiral!
