On July 31, 2008, a strange journal was found near the banks of Green Lake in Thunderburg, Ohio. The small diary belonged to one Joseph Harland. He was reported missing, along with his wife and kids, only a few days before. The following excerpts are the last few entries logged.

On May 27th of 2017, the apartment of reporter Elle Williams was investigated due to her prolonged absence from both work and social life. Testimony from neighbors said that she had grown isolated and quiet in recent weeks. According to one woman, the last person seen coming from her apartment wore a wide brimmed hat and long coat, not unlike those worn by The Dark Hats - a pejorative term for citizens of the city of Nighthead.  The only other clue to her whereabouts was an article, of sorts, left on her writing desk. It was dated only a few weeks before her disappearance and describes William's most recent work.

After Ms. Fitzgerald's journal was thoroughly analyzed, police continued their search for the missing woman, combing the city for her whereabouts.  She was never found.  However, around the same time as her disappearance, various people attending support groups around the city began to disappear.  Authorities believe the cases may be related, Ms. Fitzgerald being just one of the many missing victims.
