After much research and consideration, I have reached somewhat of an impasse on how to proceed with this series. There were so many factors to consider when I tried to lay out how the Big 3 packers achieved a near monopoly, that I had to explain what I had discovered while trying to unpack the packing boom in the period between the Civil War and World War I. This is a bit rambling and probably not all that coherent, but hopefully you get something from it.
