  • #78: Strengthening Leadership Skills by Embracing Part and Whole (Avoiding Burnout & Leadership Identity Struggles)

You may or may not realize you have been living and participating in the Part and Whole polarity your whole life!

Your first lessons regarding part and whole occurred when you were a child, and you were learning to share with your friends.

During the COVID-19 pandemic we have struggled with uncertainty, overwhelming amounts of change and we’ve felt stuck, drained, and protective of the things we value most.

The tension of the Part and Whole polarity is showing up at the individual, family, team, and system levels.  In the fight against COVID-19 the tension between part and whole show up as Individual Freedom and The Common Good and in Health and the Economy.

One of the easiest ways to think about part and whole is to picture the links in a chain.  Each link is a part, and the chain is the whole.

You probably already realize the chain is only as strong as its weakest link.  What are you doing to make sure you are strong and not the weakest link?

If you want to be a strong link in the chain, listen to this episode and learn the power of balancing the energy of the Part and Whole polarity.

  • #77: How Leadership Fatigue Impacts Decision-Making & Safety (Burnout & Leadership Skills)

“Just like water and food we need sleep, and so every time we lose it we jeopardize our own health and the health of others”- Dr. Linda D. Scott

In this episode it was a delight to interview Dr. Linda Scott, the Dean of Nursing at University of Wisconsin-Madison about her research on nursing fatigue and the impact on safety.

Early in the interview Dr. Scott shares she was motivated to embark on such important research when the To Err is Human was published by the Institute of Medicine in 1999 and reported there were almost 100,000 deaths associated with preventable errors.  At that time Linda says it was clear there was a gap in scientific evidence regarding the number of nurse work hours and the relationship to making errors.

Dr. Scott reveals her initial studies showed nurses worked long shifts and worked overtime regularly and the risk for error tripled when working more than 12 hours and doubled when working overtime beyond any shift and that errors increased when nurses had insufficient sleep.  These initial studies demonstrated the need to learn more about work related fatigue and the potential impact on patient safety.

Dr. Scott explains when people are awake for a consecutive number of hours you can see some of the same neuro- bio-behavioral affects as you would with intoxication, as an example when you are awake for more than 15 hours it’s like having a blood alcohol level of .05.

During the interview she shares when you have a sleep deficit you can’t get it back and for every hour of sleep lost the risk for making an error increases by 7%.

Dr. Scott explains what decision regret means and how it is related to fatigue and sleep deficits and is a personal and professional well-being issue.

The research studies are transferrable to other health professions. There are other research studies looking at physicians and other ancillary staff as well as other safety critical positions.

It was also noted during the interview that there is no regulatory oversight on hours in the United States for health professions.

Dr. Scott reveals there are recommendations coming from other industries that reflect nursing and other health professions and could inform the healthcare sector.

You probably already realize this is a phenomenal and eye-opening interview.  Go ahead and listen now!

  • #75: How Leaders Can Overcome Burnout & Redefine Their Leadership Identity with Work-Life Balance Strategies

In this episode we have the extreme pleasure of interviewing Ann Shepard, a Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Informatics Officer about her quest for work life balance.

During the interview Ann shares how her journey began when she realized what she had heard and learned previously about work life balance wasn’t serving her.

Ann reveals as she transitioned to working from home during the initial days of COVID she felt like she was working all the time and struggling to turn work off.  This realization fueled her desire to know what she needed to do differently.

“I’m so busy” is a common mantra for leaders, Ann says. What Ann came to realize, when it came to registering for the Work Life Balance Bootcamp, was that she didn’t have enough time not to do it!

Early in the interview Ann spoke about how learning about polarities made her think differently than she had before.  She also shared how she leverages the Work Life Balance Blueprint she developed in the bootcamp weekly to guide and monitor how effective her action steps are.

As a result of participating in the Work Life Balance Accelerator Program, Ann learned a lot about leaning into others at home and leveraging the strengths of her team at work to enhance not only her performance but also the performance of her team.

Ann shared writing a vision as part of the Rise of the Resilient and Balanced Healthcare Leader Coaching Program felt a bit daunting at first, mostly because she thought she wasn’t good at it, but now finds it a helpful tool to capture what she wants in her immediate future and long-term future.

One of Ann’s biggest lessons about goals was not to go crazy and set too many and that you can leverage them to achieve your action steps in your Work Life Balance Blueprint.

Toward the end of the interview Ann reveals what she considers the biggest value of the program, the opportunity to learn polarities as a new way of dealing with a common challenge and then building on the new knowledge and information in a logical and absorbable way throughout the rest of the coaching programs.

Ann recommends to anyone thinking about joining our coaching programs that you should take advantage of it, because it’s an opportunity to learn new tools that will support your new realities and give you some power to balance those things you can’t control with what you can control.

At the end of the interview Ann says, “this is life changing, I’m a junkie about this” and “you’d be a fool not to join or stand in line for the next class!”

Well, how can we argue with that?!

You’ve probably already realized Ann has had a life changing experience and you have an opportunity to learn from her experience.  Go ahead and listen now, you’ll be glad you did.

  • #74: Why Healthcare Leaders Struggle with Burnout & Work-Life Balance—And How to Fix It

In this episode we interview a group of amazing healthcare leaders whom we have had the privilege of engaging with in our various coaching programs for healthcare leaders.

These leaders come from a wide variety of backgrounds and locations, but they all share a common goal to be the best they can be at both work and home.

During the interview, the group revealed their motivations for seeking work life balance included the desire to continue to grow and evolve on a personal level, new roles and career transitions, and pressures and challenges of working from home during COVID.

A common benefit from participating in our Work Life Balance Bootcamp for Healthcare Leaders that our guests received was a heightened awareness of the tension between work and home and having the tools and strategies to mitigate negative consequences. Nancy found great benefit in having a blueprint to help her recognize what she needs to differently and guide her actions daily.  In addition, Ann shared one of the biggest differences for her after participating in the bootcamp was she had the awareness and permission to not expect a perfect 50/50 balance between work and home.

Roberta shared it felt a bit riskier to engage in the Work Life Balance Accelerator Program because she knew this experience would require her to go deeper, but at the same time she felt the compassion of the group supported her to take the next steps.  For Nancy and Vicky learning to overcome negative and limiting stories was powerful.

During the interview Vicky shared The Rise of the Resilient and Balanced Healthcare Leader Coaching Program is where she put it all together and realized it’s not just about work life balance but many other polarities that are at play.  A common theme among the group was the power of the coaching both in the group and one-on-one.  Ann’s favorite element was the 360 Polarity Assessment™ and what she learned from it.

This group of talented healthcare leaders knew in their hearts when the coaching program concluded they weren’t finished and there was more to explore and learn.  Many became the founding members of the Court of Support, which Vicky says is “the icing on the cake”! They shared how they look forward to their weekly connection and to supporting each other in continuing the work life balance journey and achieving their goals.

The heartfelt message at the end of the interview to other healthcare leaders who may be struggling right now was invest in yourself because the people you love at home and at work and your community need strong leaders and you can’t give what you don’t have, so take the time to work on being the best version of you so you can give attention to what matters most.

You’ve probably already realized, before listening how inspiring and powerful this interview is.  Go ahead and listen now, you’ll be glad you did.
