The By Name Beauty Podcast, the only show of its kind, exists to increase understanding and awareness around the intersection of culture & beauty.

Why? Because culture is something we all hold very near and dear to us. The word culture itself evokes sentiments of community and common experience. & let me tell you no matter where you go or what group of people you look at, I can guarantee you that there is in fact a culture (meaning–shared language, practices, customs, beliefs, & community) in the way individuals with shared backgrounds approach and express beauty.

On this week’s episode of the By Name Beauty Podcast…

We kick off our time together by discussing the unique and God-ordained mission of By Name Beauty and why as a brand we will always live at the intersection of culture & beauty. After that, we transition into what we learned from the previous episode, including the pitfalls of equating a woman’s skill set to her appearance (s/o to my girl Saweetie). Then after a quick recap for all of our newbies, we get into the really fun stuff. Think– our favorite beauty treatments/services (yep, the ones that we usually spend allllll our coins on) and why we love them so 😉

And in true #ByNameBeautyFam fashion, we couldn’t skip the opportunity to create community and share with others. That’s why we are proud to officially introduce the By Name Beauty Business Directory (Service Edition)!

With your help, we have and are continuing to compile a list of service-based beauty businesses around the country that are minority-owned. Can I get a woop-woop, somebody?! It is our hope that users no matter where they are can search by city or state and find a qualified, outstanding professional of color to service their beauty & wellness needs.

No more flying out of town and searching [insert minority here]-owned nail salon, hairstylist, masseuse, lash tech (& whatever other service you’re looking for) near me. Don’t worry, sis. We got you! Or whatever Issa and ‘nem said on Insecure….

Currently, there are about a dozen businesses on the list (across TX, FL, CA, & MA) that we personally adore but it won’t stop there! This is meant to be a living, breathing document that continues to grow.

Wondering what those lyrics have to do with today’s episode? Well, obviously you’re going to have to listen to the show to find out but we’ll let you in on a secret…Today, we’re discussing women and their appearance.

I know, I know. Don’t we talk about that enough?

For sure. Without a shadow of a doubt.

But what we don’t discuss often enough is how, unfortunately, a woman’s appearance is almost always used against her. Specifically to discredit or make unfair assumptions about her skillsets in a particular field.

& because I believe in vibrant discussions paired with real-life examples we framed today’s show around an experience that rapper and ultimate content-creator, Saweetie, had on a popular radio show. Yes, we’re using the Icy Girl herself to examine the dangers of misogyny, sexism, and double standards.

Whew, chile. Oh-kay. Let’s get into it…

Guess who’s backkkkkkk?

I know, I know. It has been quite a while since the #ByNameBeautyFam has heard from me on the podcast. 4 months to be exact; & tbh, I can’t really give any excuses. The only explanation is that ya girl was TIRED (or should I say TIED in my Kevin Gates voice). At the beginning of the episode, you’ll hear all about where I been & how I got there.

After we finish catching up like good friends, we will delve into the show topic of the week–evolving beauty routines as a result of the ongoing pandemic. I don’t know about y’all but this past year has challenged me in every area of my life, including my beauty routine. At this point, I still want to look beautiful and feel good about myself…but without a lot of fuss or “rah-rah”. I simply don’t have the time (or energy) in my new normal to do things that no longer empower me. #periodt.

& of course, before we wrap up our time together, I’ll share with you the small arsenal of makeup products that make it into my routine every single day. In no particular order, they are listed below. & if you know me, you know I don’t play about my recommendations. These are game-changers, baby!

That moment when someone says something negative about you that actually sparks your creativity + growth >>>

That’s what happened when my grandmother balked at my natural hair this weekend. I had attempted to do a flexi-rod set & instead of getting voluminous curls I came out looking a bit more like curly sue. Let’s just say that granny was less than pleased with my newfound appearance. What was an experiment and a commitment on my end to embrace more of my natural hair was a bit seemed to be a bit triggering for my grandmother which brings us to today’s show topic.

Our natural hair versus err’body. Versus our mothers. Versus our aunties. Verus our social spaces and significant others and even our places of work.

Everybody seems to have an opinion on natural hair. Black women’s hair. Textured hair. The way society has viewed and treated this type of hair here in America has always been ugly. & that treatment has now affected how we see our hair for ourselves and it is now time to unlearn some of those ideals. I can’t wait for you to listen and to join in on the conversation.

As a part of my birthday festivities, I sat down to reflect on the past year. In the midst of asking myself some really personal questions I ended up stumbling upon some life lessons that are extremely important to me at my big age.

& of course, I had to share them with you all.

This year has been wild, to say the least, but here we are… still showing up. Still moving. Still shaking. Still doing what needs to be done.

& some times, many times, in fact, that is hard. The simple act of showing up is hard. Couple that with the responsibility that we take for not only ourselves but for our families, friends, coworkers, and community and now we’re in a whole new fight. Notice that I am not saying that this responsibility isn’t needed –I’m only acknowledging the fact that it can be difficult from time to time.

In the By Name Beauty Podcast’s latest episode, I share lessons and practical tips that I myself use to relate, relax, and release after being depleted. I’m hoping that sharing them with you is helpful in some way.

Hi Y’all.

It’s Jocoby. Your favorite beauty activist/journalist and today I am back with another episode focused on something most women spend a ton of time on– our hair.

Women of color, and particularly Black women, have always had a long and varied journey with their hair. For many of us, it’s kinky. For some of us, it’s curly. & for some, coily. We try to define it and type it. Hello 4c. 4a. 4b. 3c. 3b. 3a. Leave it uncombed for too long and soon enough you’ll have knots. Then tangles. But no matter what, we love it for its versatility. How it moves and bounces back. We elegantly and intricately place it into braids & twists or an afro or a perm. After all, it’s our hair and we can do what we want with it.

My purpose in today’s show was to simply talk about the journey and relationship that we have with our hair with hopes that other individuals could relate and share in sacred space together.

My guests for today’s show are two of my closest childhood friends, my complete Day 1s, Sade & Chioma. They are extraordinary Black girls who have ordinary stories as it relates to their manes. Ones that we can all identify with.
