Before the catastrophe and threat of wider war in the Middle East, the United States was throwing its strategic weight at its China problem. Today in Beijing, California Governor Gavin Newsom met with President Xi Jinping, who said he hopes Newsom's visit will pave the way for more cooperation between China and the United States.
