Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling

This week, we dig into the story that inspired the major motion picture The Conjuring. In 1971, Roger and Caroline Perron moved into the Arnold Estate with their five young daughters. Paranormal phenomenon began immediately. From full body apparitions and poltergeist activity to oppressive atmosphere and possible demonic obsession tormented this family over the next decade. The involvement of Ed and Lorraine Warren kicked things up a notch when Caroline was possibly possessed during a seance. Regardless of your opinion, this trauma impacted this family for the rest of their lives and much of the movie’s characterizations were farther off-base than you would ever imagine.

This week, we had the privilege of sitting down with Chris and Tyler from Doc Side Media. They are a pair of film makers that have been putting out Fortean documentaries like a machine since they started just nine months ago. Honestly, we felt like we had kind of encountered a couple of kindred spirits. This month they released Conscious Contact: Full Disclosure and The Ghosts of Gettysburg! This week, we’re discussing a peculiar case from 1994 in Celina, Texas. Following the tragic loss of their beloved son, Travis and Olivia Mabel went their separate ways. Travis moved to Boston in hopes of moving forward, but Olivia went inside. Receding from the world in a four year period of grief-stricken seclusion that would culminate in her bizarre death. However, this is not a simple case of unexplainable circumstances. Olivia was found to be dabbling in esoteric magick ostensibly in hopes of creating a physical manifestation of her lost son. This week, we’re discussing one of the most terrifying entities from Native American folklore: The Wendigo. Tales of a perpetually starving monster roaming the forests of Eastern North America. The Wendigo originates in the lore of tribes like the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Algonquin. Its name roughly translates to "the evil spirit that devours mankind". An obvious boogeyman to battle against the prevalence of cannibalism during this extremely difficult period in human history. Additionally, we cover a few unsettling accounts of wendigo psychosis, including the case of Swift Runner and an account of two genuine, dead to rights wendigo hunters. Strap in for this one. It’s a lot.

This week, we’re releasing one of the first interviews that we conducted for the show! It’s a great chat with an old friend: Alex Dougherty! This girl is a total badass and this was a super fun conversation. She is a certified Reiki Healer and a retired Air Force mechanic. We talk about a few experiences that she had at paranormal hotspots near the little town that we grew up in, a UFO sighting that she had while enlisted, and not to bury the lead, but an ongoing connection that she shared with what she perceives to be an interdimensional being through her meditation practice. Incredible stuff.

On December 6, 1990 a military battalion led by Colonel Tzvetko Kanev rolled into the small Bulgarian village of Tsarichina. Under the auspices of a legendary lost treasure, they cordoned off a tract of land and began excavating. After the discovery of a decidedly unnatural spiraling subterranean tunnel, things on the surface to a turn toward the bizarre. Failed equipment, UFO sightings, shadow figure encounters, and ghostly whispers became everyday happenings. It wasn’t until the group discovered the massive circular room at the end of the spiral that the true dangers of this place revealed themselves.
