Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling

Clara and Phil Dandy lived in the Hinsdale House along with their children in the early 1970s. The paranormal activity became so frequent and so menacing that they called Father Alphonsus, a priest from St. Bonaventure University for help. With legends of a hanging tree, a pond that has claimed at least one life, a “structural exorcism”, and hills that are said to hold the graves of countless, to say that this place is a hotspot would be a desperate understatement. Join us as we take a look at what many believe to be the most haunted house in Western New York. Enjoy!

The article, by Reeves Wiedeman, became the basis of a Netflix limited series created by Ryan Murphy. This is a truly bizarre mystery with twists and turns and moments of deep introspection. In April 1983, Mary Cousett from Alton, Illinois disappeared after leaving her home with her boyfriend Stanley Holiday Jr. Holiday was arrested and would confess to her murder. The only problem? Investigators could not find the 27-year-old's body. After seven months of searching, police took an unusual route. They called Greta Alexander, a woman with psychic abilities. Alexander was known locally for her talents and for greatly helping the needy, and she did just that. She located the body which ultimately led to the conviction of Stanley Holiday Jr. Psychics helping the police is a very old story. Where did it start? Can these incredible cases be believed? In the late 1940s, in the United States, priests of the Catholic Church performed a series of exorcisms on an anonymous boy, documented under the pseudonym "Roland Doe". The 14-year-old boy was the alleged victim of demonic possession and the events were recorded by the attending priests. Subsequent supernatural claims surrounding the events were used as elements in William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel The Exorcist. Could this boy have really experienced the presence of evil living inside him? Was it simply a case of misdiagnosed acute mental illness? Has this whole thing just been the exaggeration of a fictional narrative to begin with? We won’t get the the bottom of it, but we’ll have a great time trying! Enjoy!

On 27th October 1974 John and Alain Avis (pseudonyms) were driving home to Aveley with their three children when they ran into a green fog. They drove straight through it and their radio started to crackle and smoke, but they emerged from it further down the road. They suffered a period of missing time, and after strange dreams, poltergeist activity in their home, and near-constant bouts of sleep paralysis, they were hypnotically regressed, which revealed a classic abduction scenario, involving aliens from another planet.
