Canada is being forced to reckon with historic abuse and mistreatment of indigenous people - particularly children who attended mostly Roman Catholic residential schools which were mandatory for indigenous people. More than 1600 unmarked graves have been discovered at former residential school sites in British Columbia and Saskatchewan over the past two months. Indigenous leaders have said they expect more graves will be found as investigations continue. There is a national soul-searching about Canada's legacy of residential schools, and the treatment of indigenous people. Max Towle from Worldwatch spoke to Geraldine Shingoose who went through the residential school system for nine years as a child at the Muscowequan Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan in the 1960s.
