Canes Corner

A live on-location chat with the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes about coaching, his early influences, getting off to a slow start this season, and chickens, yes, chickens.

Dimitri Orlov's sharp angle goal with 36 seconds left broke a 1-1 tie and helped the Canes to a 3-1 win over Arizona.  It was Carolina's last game before the bye-week heading into the All Star break.  Martin Necas scored for the 4th time in his last 5 games, it came on the power play in the second period and tied the game at 1.  Jesper Fast added an insurance goal 13 seconds after Orlov put the Hurricanes in front.  Antti Raanta had to make just 10 saves and NONE in the 3rd period as the Canes held the Coyotes without a shot on target in the final 20 minutes.

Antti Raanta made 23 saves, and fellow Fins Sebastion Aho and Teuvo Teravainen each had a goal and an assist as Carolina won for the second time in 27 hours in a 3-2 win over the Devils. Carolina beat Boston, 3-2, on the road on Wednesday and are now just 2 points behind the Rangers in the Metro. Jordan Staal's deflection goal came 25 seconds after Teravainen's 2nd period power play tally and snapped a 14 game goal-scoring drought for the captain.

Spencer Martin's Canes debut was a stunning 3-2 win over the Bruins. Martin Necas scored in his 3rd straight game. Jordan Martinook's late 3rd period game-winner was his 5th goal in the last 6 games. Carolina scored twice on the power play and went 4 for 4 on the penalty kill against the 4th best power play in the league.

The Hurricanes lost at home to the Minnesota Wild, 5-2, Sunday night.  Martin Necas and Michael Bunting scored, but defensive coverage breakdowns led to a pair of Wild goals that proved too much for the Canes to overcome.  Carolina is off until Wednesday when they skate at Boston.

Martin Necas, Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov each had a goal and an assist as the Hurricanes beat the Red Wings 4-2. Jordan Martinook scored in his 4th straight game for the Canes and Svechnikov's 3rd period power play gave them the lead for good. Antti Raanta stopped 10 shots in the win.

Adam Gold interviews Justin Williams before his induction into the Carolina Hurricanes Hall of Fame. Williams' empty-netter in Game 7 of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals sealed the Canes victory over Edmonton during Williams first iteration with the Canes from 2004-2009. After winning two Stanley Cups with the LA Kings, Williams came back to the Canes in 2017, and helped the team return to the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2019.

Nicknamed "Mr. Game 7", Justin Williams is tied for the most goals in Game 7's in NHL History, and finished his career with an 8-1 record in those nine games.

Seth Jarvis scored a goal and had 2 assists. Jordan Martinook played in his 600th career NHL game. Andrei Svechnikov scored his 10th goal of the year. And Antti Raanta came on in relief of Pyotr Kochetkov who left the game injured in the 2nd period.

Disclaimer: Apologies for less than stellar audio.  Operator error.  We'll be back to getting this right on Thursday.

Antti Raanta was spectacular in Carolina's, 2-1, shootout loss to the Blues on Saturday night.  21 saves including a few that had every right to be goals.  Teuvo Teravainen scored Carolina's only goal on a first period power play.  Yes, the Canes scored a power play goal for the 7th straight game.  Carolina is off until Thursday when they host the Ducks.

The Hurricanes spotted the Capitals a 2-0 lead and then scored 6 unanswered to beat Washington, 6-2. The Canes won their 5th straight game, scored twice on the power play and Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov extended their point streaks to 6 games each. In that span, the duo have scored 10 goals and added 23 assists. The power play has scored in 6 straight games.
