Canes Corner

The Carolina Hurricanes were probably the better team in Pittsburgh. But, hockey games are not judged like figure skating. Most goals wins and the Penguins had 4 to Carolina's 2. Brett Pesce and Sebastian Aho scored for the Canes, who trailed 2-0 entering the 3rd period. Carolina will be off until Thursday when they play in Toronto.

It was one of THOSE games. The kind where nothing really comes easy. And, in those games, it's the grinders who often come through. Steven Lorentz' 7th goal of the season -- his 3rd against the Flyers this year -- off a great feed from Derek Stepan started the scoring in the 2nd. Then it was Jordan Martinook's 3rd of the year, late in the 3rd, deflecting a Vincent Trocheck flip from the point past Philly goaltender Martin Jones. It all added up to a 3-1 win for the Hurricanes. It was Carolina's 4th straight win and sends them to Pittsburgh 8 points up on the Penguins in the Metropolitan Divisioin.

But, his whirling shot past a sprawling Philipp Grubauer put the Hurricanes in front 3-2 and they went on to beat the Seattle Kraken at PNC Arena. Nino Niederreiter and Teuvo Teravainen scored power play goals in the 2nd period for the Canes. For Nino, it was his 17th of the year, while Teravainen, playing in his 500th NHL game, it was his 16th of the season, Antti Raanta made 28 saves earning his second win in as many starts. Carolina is off until Thursday when they meet the Colorado Avalanche in Raleigh.

Coming off the 4-0 snoozer in Washington the Hurricanes needed a quick start against the Penguins. Well, that isn't what they got. But, from the second period on, Jordan Staal and company went to work. The captain scored twice and then turned it over to Andrei Svechnikov and the Canes power play in overtime. Carolina has now beaten the Penguins twice in the last 12 days and they widen their lead in the Metropolitan Division.

Then Nino Niederreiter and Vincent Trocheck scored 36 seconds apart in the opening two minutes of the 3rd period to hand the rest over to Frederik Andersen.
