One of the greatest examples of community in scripture is found in our chapter of study this week: Acts 2. What we learn in this chapter is that when the Holy Spirit works in our lives He drives us outside of ourselves and toward 3 things:

1. The Lord 

2. The Lost 

3. The Lonely 

So often when we look for meaning in life, happiness, purpose, and a sense of belonging, we tend to look within. We often look in the mirror and ask ourselves life's deepest questions. But what we learn in scripture is that the answers to those questions don't exist within us. They exist outside of us. And when the Holy Spirit has his way in our lives, He reveals to us that what we are looking for is found beyond us, in the Lord and other people. Last week we kicked off our new years series "Church in the Wild" by giving an introduction of the book of Acts, what the purpose of the church is, and where we are going this year.

Acts 1 gives us what is essentially the thesis statement for the church of Jesus in the known world today:

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 NIV

In this one action-packed verse we get the PURPOSE, the PLAN, and the POWER of the church. We are praying for a fresh understanding, freedom, and boldness to be the church that goes toward darkness, not away from it. Like the early church, we pray that we become a church who falls in love with the only cause worth giving our life for.

The Book of Acts is the remarkable story of how God used a group of ordinary people to catalyze the largest faith movement in the history of the world. And thus, the church began! 

But why did God make the church? What's its purpose? The truth is everything God makes has a purpose, and that includes us as the church. God made the church to lift up his name, end loneliness, and be the light to the world. This Sunday we unpacked this in a message called, “Why God Made The Church.”

This Sunday I can't wait to unpack it all with you in a message I'm calling "Why God Made The Church." 

Join us this season as we pray for the Lord to pour out a fresh boldness and courage over our His people. Our prayer is that we be the kind of light that goes toward the darkness not away from it. Each and every year this holiday season offers so many traditions we get to enjoy, but the problem with tradition is we rarely let it transform us. It's more about the past, things we've already learned and experienced, therefore it does not always bring the life change we're longing for.

But when Jesus became Emmanuel, God with us, he became our savior, past, present, and future. Therefore, Christmas is not just about history and eternity but also about our present day reality. How can we allow Christmas to touch, transform, and bring life to the darkness, most painful and anxious areas of our lives? We unpacked this in our Christmas messaged called, "The Manger is Me."

Christmas reminds us another season has come and gone. We mark our lives by moments, and Christmas is one moment we all experience. For some this moment is joyful, while others painful, as things are not where you thought they would be. You began 2024 praying, planning, dreaming of a narrative for your life and it did not take long for things to veer of course.

The question is, "How will you respond?" It takes a certain courage to press forward when things blow up, when dreams are changed, when the story you are living is not the one you planned. This week we looked at a man whose story took a drastic turn, and the courage he had to trust God to write something better.

There are so many things that go on at Christmas time: shopping, baking, parties, traveling, new shows, new movies, gifts, and usually a lot of food!

But how do we not lose Jesus in the midst of it all? Advent is about celebrating the arrival of the most important person to ever be born, and yet it is easy to make this season about all the extra stuff.
