In this episode, I sit down with Kieran Dunn, who had an inkling he wanted to be an entrepreneur years before he became one. But like many of us rebels, Kieran first went the conventional route in his career, working in a variety of industries in roles such as a computer programmer, website designer, call centre agent, and summer camp science teacher, to name a few. But about 10 years ago, Kieran found himself at a career crossroads with two potential paths ahead: either go back to school or open a secondhand bookstore. He chose to lean into his lifelong love of books, and in 2012 Kieran opened the doors to his store Janus Books, which has been going strong ever since. Kieran shares with us about the vivid moment when he decided to embark on his entrepreneurial journey and some of the many things he loves about working for himself. We also dive into the topics of failure, believing in yourself and your ideas (even when other people think you’re crazy), and the importance of pursuing work that fits with who you are.
