The Psalm emphasizes that the LORD will...
bring judgment upon the wicked- 9:3, 5, 6, 15-16, 17, 19-20
vindicate the righteous- 9:9, 10, 12 , 18, 18
When Apollo 11 went to the moon in 1969 they had a silicon disk in which they left messages from 73 nations and the message from the Vatican was the text of Psalm 8
Psalm 8 begins and ends with praise to God. It is an inclusion beginning and ending with the same words, "LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth" vs. 1, 9.
1. The Psalm speaks of the greatness of God compared to the relatively small heavens.
2. It stresses how immense the heavens are compared to small and insignificant man.
3. It states that man is small but God has given Him an exalter position in the universe.
Psalm 8 is quoted often in the NT.
Psalm 8:2 is quoted by Jesus in Matthew 21:16 to speak of how the children are praising Him in the temple.
Psalm 8:4-6 is quoted and broken down in Hebrews 2:6-9 and applied to Jesus.
Psalm 8:6 is applied to Jesus in Ephesians 1:22-23 and I Corinthians 15:27.
Psalm 7:1-2 The enemy threatens to tear David apart
7:3-5 If he is guilty, may he be judged
7:6-11 He calls on the LORD to arise in judgment
7:12-16 Judgment will fall upon the head of the wicked
7:17 Final praise
God as judge from Psalm 7
God is judge of all peoples- 7:7-8
God is a righteous judge- 7:11
God is angry with sin- 7:6, 11
God punishes the wicked- 7:9, 11, 12-16
God vindicates the righteous- 7:8, 9, 10
I made a mistake around the 22 minute mark in talking about the word in the Greek translation for "Arise." It is actually the word in the Greek translation for "lifted up" which also appears in the same verse.
The division we made of Psalm 6 is
1. The psalm describe the depth of David's despair- vs. 2-3, 6-7
2. His plea to God for help- vs. 1, 4-5
3. His confidence of victory- vs. 8-10
This psalm alternates between petitions to God (vs. 1-3, 7-8, 11-12) and descriptions of the wicked (vs. 4-6, 9-10). The psalm distinguishes between the righteous and the wicked but it also reminds us that we only enter the LORD's house by the abundance of HIs lovingkindness (vs. 7).
Psalm 3
David flees from Absalom
3:1-2 Many are rising against him
3:3-4 The LORD is his shield
3:5-6 The LORD sustains me
3:7-8 Salvation belongs to the LORD
