Hi, I’m Carole Baskin and I’ve been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. Purr-Sonality Serval was euthanized today by Dr. Justin.
She’d been suffering a while and we thought we could make her feel better by pulling some rotten teeth, but that wasn’t her only issue apparently.  Blood work showed her kidneys to have failed, and an exploratory surgery revealed nothing we could fix.

She was born here and died here in a cage.  I hate that.  I’m going to put an end to wild cats being bred for life in prison.

The Memorial service for Vernon Stairs will be
Tuesday, August 30, at 10:00 am for family only.

    The location will be:
    Florida National Cemetery
    6502 SW 102nd Ave
    Bushnell, FL  33513
    http://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/florida.asp

Travel time from Tampa is approximately 60-90 minutes.
Upon arriving at the guard house and providing Vernon's name, each family member will be given the designated travel lane (there are six lanes). Promptly at 10 a.m., an escort will arrive and begin the procession leading the hearse, followed by family members. We will stay in our individual cars following the procession to the designated pavilion where we will park and participate in the service.

We are alotted 30 minutes for our service as they have many others and must stay with a strict schedule.  Chuck will do the talk and prayer and the Honor Guard will do the presenting of the flag and the taps.  We will not be able to go to the grave site at this time but can go later after 3 p.m. or thereafter any day and time.  It will take about 90 days for the headstone and they will let us know when that has been placed.  We are planning on the 30-minute service, lunch and then back home and returning later when the headstone is there.  I feel it will be easier to ride with someone so we don't have so many cars.

    Love,
    Mom/Grandma/Nana/BarJean

Looking in the Mirror My Hands Don’t Seem Like My Own

They feel my face, my hair, and it’s as if they are discovering me for the first time.  Yes, Dad, this is your face. (We look so much alike)

All day my hands seem to be moving at his will.  It sounds creepy, but was comforting.

In his latter years his hands were always in motion.  Not the shaking of Parkinson’s but constantly rubbing the steering wheel of his golf cart, of the fabric of his plain jacket, or his own hands.  I have found myself doing the same thing over the last couple of years and wonder, when I catch myself, if it is neurological or learned.  I try to minimize it, for fear of freaking Jamie out, but it starts out as an unconscious act.

Wanted to also tell you that your father was a gold seal instructor.  From an aviation perspective, you should be very proud of him!

GOLD SEAL FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATES. The specific requirements for the gold seal flight instructor certificate are contained in FAA Orders 8700.1, General Aviation Operations Inspector’s Handbook, and 8710.3C, Pilot Examiner’s Handbook. Flight instructor certificates bearing distinctive gold seals are issued to flight instructors who have maintained a high level of flight training activity and who meet special criteria. Once issued, a gold seal flight instructor certificate will be reissued each time the instructor's certificate is renewed. Applicants for gold seal flight instructor certificates must meet the following requirements:

    a. The flight instructor must hold a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating (glider flight instructors need not hold an instrument rating) or an ATP certificate;

    b. The flight instructor must hold a ground instructor certificate with an advanced or instrument ground instructor rating; and

    c. The flight instructor must have accomplished the following within the previous 24 months:

    (1) Trained and recommended at least 10 applicants for a practical test, at least 8 of whom passed their tests on the first attempt;

    (2) Conducted at least 20 practical tests as a designated pilot examiner, or graduation tests as chief instructor of a 14 CFR part 141 approved pilot school course; or

    (3) A combination of the above requirements. (Two practical tests conducted equal the credit given for one applicant trained and recommended for a practical test.)

My father died this morning around 8:30 am on his 75th birthday

I am thankful that Chuck and Mom were with him and witnessed it to be a peaceful passing.

The cop in Chuck shined through in his calm manner, despite this earth shaking event for him.  I was brushing my teeth when he called and said, “We aren’t telling anyone else yet, until it’s been confirmed, but report to Mom’s house.”

I had seen Dad the night before and it was heartbreaking to see him decline so quickly over the past 3 weeks.  I knew what Chuck was saying, so I didn’t ask for clarification, I just ran out the door to meet them at the sanctuary.

The grandchildren were called in next and we all sat around and cried and told stories until Swilley’s Funeral Home carried Dad away.  That was a gut wrenching moment for everyone, to see someone you loved so much be taken from you; knowing they are never going to come back.

I couldn’t handle it and walked out the back door.  I kicked off my shoes and walked out onto the grass.  I wanted to be connected to the earth and all life as I let go of Dad as I knew him.  I thought about the piles of concrete U’s that had been stockpiled on this field for so long and marveled at how beautiful and manicured the lawn looked now.

I walked out to the lake bank; thinking about how Dad liked to jack the hospital bed all the way up so he could see the lake out the front window and could still monitor the back gate out the back sliding glass doors. What a lovely park he’s built here.  I could feel him hovering over it.  I found joy in knowing he could see every part of it from a different perspective today.

I wondered how, when and where I’d see him again.  Would he come back, like the cats do as butterflies and dragonflies?  Would he come back as a tiger?  Or would I see him, in his previous form, like I do some people?  Maybe I would never “see” him again, but I felt him in that moment.

My mother sent this out to family and friends today:

Some of you may already know, but we wanted to notify you that Vernon passed away peacefully at approximately 8:30 this morning, on his 75th birthday.   He had visited with his children, and grandchildren. They have surrounded him all this week with laughter, stories, and readings. Chuck read the Bible to him for an hour yesterday, and that seemed to calm him.  He slept comfortably through the night, and quietly passed from this life to his reward.  In keeping with Vern's nature, we are going to have a family only memorial service for him at the cemetery in Bushnell.  Details will be given to family members once we have decided the date and time.  Thank you for your continued prayers and thoughts during this time.  In Love, The Stairs Family

    Mom’s Update on Dad
Really bad night even with the strong pain killer.  The nurse came today but after checking him only seemed concerned about getting a tech to turn off the defibrillator so it doesn't cause more pain should it try to do its job.  The tech will be here tomorrow.

I’m glad I was able to deliver the Tribute to Dad video to her and hope she’s been able to share it with him.  She had blankets hung in the hall and a towel over the tiny off light on the TV because Dad says the light is so hard on his eyes.  He can’t open his eyes, so she doesn’t know how that can be, but she’s doing all she can to accommodate him.

I’m thankful that Corey Roscoe from HSUS will be here tonight to talk to our volunteers about communication skills.   Corey emailed, “I plan on talking about personal skills, people skills and public speaking skills as ways to improve communications. I briefly touch on working with kids. I'll offer some additional resources for folks to continue their learning.”

In many ways I’m glad the sanctuary is so all consuming of my time.  It helps keep my mind off losing Dad.

Today Gale has a huge work group in Bobcat Rehab.  They are adding dirt and sod, so I’m glad she got some outside help for that back breaking work.

    Mom’s update about Dad:
Vern had a very restless and painful night but the doctor has sent a strong pain medication and Vern is resting peacefully now.  Not eating anything for two days even with encouragement from the kids.

Howie’s letter to Pat Craig of Wild Animal Sanctuary
On Sunday after the conference is over they have organized a meeting from noon to 5 to brainstorm about the big cat issue.  I have no idea what will come of it.  Could be waste of time, or prove productive. But at the very least it should be interesting I think because the people currently on the list (below) that I do know are some very sharp folks and a pretty unique opportunity to be in a room with people from so many organizations.  The group is a rather unwieldy size so it will be interesting to see how they conduct it.

I have pasted the info below and the contact at PAWS is Catherine Doyle.  We went to the conference last year for the first time only because we were asked to speak. Agree hard to get away.  I think you could help us add a lot of on the ground experience to the group. Maybe you could arrange with Catherine just to come for Sunday?

Info on Sunday attached with Catherine contact info.
Regarding the breeding I think you make interesting points.  Couple comments:

    • The bill grandfathers in all current owners so they are not objecting based on their cats being taken away.  Ohio had a couple issues that I think drove what is happening.  One is they added caging requirements.  People not meeting those is what appears to be driving the confiscations, along with some idiots just refusing to do the simple paperwork to register was also an issue.  If they had just grandfathered in the existing owners like the federal bill does without adding requirements they would not have this issue. Second, they correctly did not exempt people with USDA licenses, which as you know is a huge loophole because anyone can get a license. So I think people with USDA licenses left the state for states where a USDA license exempts them from the state rules.  The bigger mistake Ohio made in my opinion was exempting ZAA, which I believe was driven by Kasich listening to Jack Hanna.
    • The meaningful opposition to the bill is not from owners.  Other than Antle and Tabraue, they don't have much a following or resources to oppose. Mario Tabraue and/or Antle have engaged a lobbyist to oppose the bill, and Ringling's Feld has lobbyists opposing even though we put in language to exempt Feld.  That is the main opposition.  A bigger issue really is ZAA.  While some states have refused to exempt them from state laws, once Ohio did, it set a precedent and some other states have followed, giving them undeserved credibility.  And, I have to give them credit, they have been smart.  They hired a very experienced lobbyist who is well known to state legislators around the country, Alan Smith, as E.D.  The guy is smooth.  I heard him speak to a committee hearing in TX and he makes this sow's ear sound like a silk purse.  Plays on the "small business" sympathy and presents ZAA as the little guy's AZA.  Meantime, some AZA zoos have joined ZAA as well.  I think they do this to keep AZA off their backs - i.e. if AZA gives them a hard time, they just promote they are ZAA, and the generic public does not know any better.  But meantime, these AZA zoos joining gives ZAA even more credibility. The issue with ZAA is not that they oppose the bill. It is that they want to be exempted like AZA, claiming it is unfair to exempt AZA and not them.  To deal with this we have crafted different exemption language I can tell you more about.
    • Just banning breeding is interesting and worth considering.  One issue that comes to mind is enforcement  -  finding out who is breeding.  If someone has a tiger born after the bill is passed (those born before are grandfathered) how do we prove who bred it? I suppose one could try to draft language to address that by requiring records if you have

Mom’s email to me about giving up on Dad
I appreciate your telling Jamie this.  I agree with you 100%.  I don't want anyone to think I am not trying to do everything for him that I can.  He has to want to help.

For the last two days Chuck has picked Vern up from the bed and into his lounger and today he said he was much weaker than the day before in his ability to help Chuck move him.  I have seen it every day since August 6.  At first I could do everything because Vern was able to help but that time has passed.  I am not sure if even Chuck can move him another day since that is a lot of weight to dead lift without any help from the individual.

I just pray that he will not be in pain.  They sent a prescription yesterday and Katie picked it up and brought it to him but he said it didn't do any good.  Today I asked for a liquid pain killer that was stronger and the nurse said she would see if the doctor would agree as it would be morphine.

As for the magnet, they says his brand of pacemaker has an ability to turn it off a special way but has to be approved by his primary heart doctor who is on vacation until Monday, August 29.  There are five doctors in his group but apparently none want the responsibility of making that decision.

We tend to think this downturn was a recent event but looking back we can see signs of the decline.  I know I have mentioned that to you from time to time.  Chuck said he had even noticed in the last month that Vern was sitting on the golf cart more and more and breathing harder and harder.  Ecclesiastes 7:11-14: "See the way God does things and fall into line.  Don't fight the facts of nature."  Love you!

I Finished a Video Tribute to Day

I’m thankful for the reminder from The Universe that I’m only dreaming this human experience.

I’ve let it be painful when it need not be.  We are all just coming into and out of form in our eternal dance.  Thank you Mike Dooley for these daily Notes From The Universe.

I finished the 30 minute tribute to Dad yesterday.  I’d like him to see it, but not sure he can stay awake that long.  I’m going to make a shorter version.

Jamie just can’t give up on her grandfather.
She called me, angry that I hadn’t insisted on more blood work and that I hadn’t read the label on his protein shakes to know that he isn’t getting enough carbs.  Not like I’d have any idea what I was reading.  I can’t stop crying because I don’t want to lose him either, but I couldn’t tell her on the phone what was in my heart, so I emailed her:

I know you are angry and don't want to give up on Grandpa.  I appreciate that you love him and want to make him feel better.

I just don't think doing more tests, sending him to more doctors, making him take shots of insulin every day and pushing him to stay with us is what he wants.

He's terrified of that defibrillator going off and your grandmother said she called hospice to turn it off a couple days ago.  I wasn't there when the nurse came because we were in the cat hospital, and your grandmother didn't call me, so I don't know if that got done yet; but he wants it done.

He absolutely refused to even acknowledge or do anything about his diabetes when he was fully capable of doing so.  He's frustrated with his inability to get around and angry all the time because he feels so bad and helpless.  Every day we've had with him since his heart surgery in 2010 has been a gift to us, but a sacrifice for him.

If this were me, and one day it will be, I wouldn't want you to be keeping me alive against my will.  Love Mom

Three things I am grateful for today?

I am really thankful that JoJo the Caraval turned out to just be fat and not suffering from a tumor.

I am happy that Tiger Lilly, the 21 year old bobcat had three bad molars removed and may get a few more happy years.  We were all stunned that it’s her first time to be ill since 1995.

Losing Windstar has been almost more than Jamie can bear, and I’ll share her tribute to him below, but his necropsy showed him to be full of necrotic tissue and a ruptured blood vessel in the midst of the mass, so I am very happy that he didn’t suffer.  He seemed fine the day before and losing him was a shock.  They are so stoic.  He probably felt much worse than he let on, but I am grateful that Justin was able to get to him so soon.

Jamie posted to Facebook: My dear Bobcat, I cannot even imagine what it will be like to go on without you. To never again see your beautiful ruffed face, hear your deep and welcoming purr, or to stare in to your soulful eyes. You have been there for half my life and you are a part of my family. These past few days have been the hardest I have ever experienced. I feel like I will never stop crying. You have taken a piece of my heart away with you. Our time together was not enough. I will miss you every day, forever sweet Bobcat.

My mother told Howie that Dad’s heart is only working at 20%
That seems to be right, judging by his condition, but what is weird is that this is the first time she’s said that and she said it to Howie and not to her kids.  During the past couple weeks, she did tell me once that one of the doctors, who she said had a terrible bed side manner and told her that Dad was dying, so what did she expect him to do.  She got all teary, so I had not pressed her, and at the time thought, “Well, we’ve known he was dying since 2011, when the valve repair attempt, wasn’t completely successful.”

When I called to check on her and Dad yesterday, before leaving the sanctuary, she said he was trying to eat more, even though everything tastes so bad to him and that he was sleeping.  She said she was going to let Mrs Hammondtree take over teaching her children’s class at church because Dad didn’t want her to leave his side.  I guess he knows the end is near.

I took NyQuil to go to sleep last night.  I haven’t been sleeping well and feel dazed.  Howie was sniffling after returning from his four day trip to CO and I don’t want to contract that and risk bringing it to my parents.  Of course, I woke up thinking about the strange relationship I’ve had with Dad for as far back as I can remember.

I appreciate that my parents stayed together these 56 years, as marked on July 1 of this year.  I love that they have managed to provide such a supportive role for my brother and me and our children and his grand children.  I am grateful for the work ethic that both of them instilled in me.

I started crying again writing this and my vision has been a mess the last week or so with all of the crying in my contact lenses.  So, I went into Facebook to smash trolls and respond to our supporters.

There I found a message from Courtney, my contact from explore.org who had reached out to Facebook for us to report that their company, Instagram, had unfairly shut down our account of 52,000 followers based on false claims by Black Jaguar White Tiger’s Eddie Serio that we are buying likes, which is a violation of their terms of service.  Today our account was restored.

It reminded me of this quote:  "If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance." - George Bernard Shaw

What is the one thing that makes people nervous about associating with us?  It’s the fact that all of the circus folk, back yard breeders, roadside zoos and pseudo sanctuaries will come out en masse posting lies and half truths about us.  We’ve always been open and honest about our evolution and our mistakes and we quickly learned from them and changed.  The bad guys want everyone to know that the things we did 20 years ago (’94-’97 mostly) were the same as what they are doing today.

Anyone who thinks about that for half a minute will see that it’s crazy to say, “Big Cat Rescue is bad because 20 years ago they bought, bred and touched exotic cats, just like we are still doing.” Sadly, people are lazy and it’s easier to just forward something that looks bad to all their contacts, rather than really think about it.

The first thing they should be considering is; why do the bad guys hate Big Cat Rescue so much?

We wear it as a badge of honor that exotic cat abusers hate us more than any other sanctuary. That tells you we are doing the most to end the abuse.

“I want to go see him!” Jamie wailed through her gut wrenching sobs.
Gale had just texted the Winstar, the 18 year old bobcat that Jamie had nursed from a few day old, had died.

Windstar Bobcat was netted to see vet after being found "down" in his den. He seemed fine the day before, but when he didn't come out to eat, Jamie knew something was wrong. We netted him to take him in the hospital and called the vet. We found vomited mushrooms, but both varieties turned out to be non toxic.

A large mass was found on his kidney and biopsied. It was sent out, along with blood work for testing.

Watching over him through the night on a Nest cam, Jamie reported that he was awake and looking around at 5 am, so she felt he was out of the woods. About a half hour later though he passed peacefully in his sleep.

A necropsy will be done to determine the cause of death. He was 18 which was old for a bobcat and extremely old for a hybrid. His brother died almost immediately after birth so every year Windstar had was a gift to us all. http://bigcatrescue.org/Windstar

I am thankful that we have the tools and knowledge to assist our cats through their old age.

I am grateful that we are nearing the end of these horrible losses.  The last of the cats I was most close to, because they required so much intensive care when they were young were Windsong, Catera, Raindance, Hercules, Shere Khan and Little Feather.  They are all gone now.  I love the others and have spent many nights on the bedside floor by Bailey and others, but I feel like the worst is over for me.

Jamie still has to look with dread toward the days of losing Jumanji, Pharaoh, Tonga, Will, Moses and Anasazi.  They are all in their late teens now, so the heart breaks will end soon for her too.

Hi, I’m Carole Baskin and I’ve been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/

I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.
