Dad ate pizza and a protein shake for breakfast! Can’t say how thankful I am about that. Mom seemed in good spirits and Dad was awake when I came in. He was back on the couch, instead of the hospital bed we brought in, so he’s been up a bit, I guess. I’m happy that Howie’s coming home today. I’m glad he got a break but there is so much going on here that I really need his help. ...Now she’s sent over a demand for over $4,000 and a plethora of hoops to jump through next. I am not a detail person and have no patience for these little bureaucrats who use their position to impose hardship on those who don’t cow tow to them. I appreciate that Jamie has the stories done for the Fall Big Cat Times. Proofing it is how I’ll spend my morning. Dad was admitted into Hospice care and has switched his primary doctor to the Hospice doctors so that he doesn’t have to wait days or weeks for the help he needs. His current physician Dr. Velez just can’t be bothered any more it seems. After four hours of meeting with first Ruthann L, RN for Continucare, then Jennifer H?, RN from St. Joseph’s North, and then Felix from Hospice, and recording all the sessions so none of us forgets what was said during this emotional time, this is my best recollection of events. 8/6/16 Dad’s defibrillator went off 7 times in quick succession, causing excruciating pain and causing him to have a hard time breathing in the aftermath. A defibrillator fires when it detects the heart is in “lethal rhythm”. Dad was getting ready to go on vacation and wasn’t working at the time. He was in enough pain and distress to ask Mom to take him to the hospital. She drove him to St. Joe’s N. where he stayed until the 9th. While there he was given lasix to help drain the excess water that was building up around his heart and lungs due to the decreased efficiency of his heart. With that and oxygen he was feeling good enough to go home. He was instructed upon release to set an appointment with his primary care physician. Mom had a wrong number for them and tried for days to reach them without success. Meanwhile Dad’s condition worsened, instead of getting better, as they had hoped, so that he could brace himself for another Dr. visit. While in the hospital, Dr. Wong, a kidney expert came in and took him off the lasix as his kidneys were in Stage 3. Mom said Dr. Wong said they had over medicated him and that his kidneys would outlast him. That doesn’t seem to be the case though, based on the next few days. 8/9/16 Dad returned home. He wouldn’t eat in the hospital, more than a bite or two, and complains that everything tastes like it was drenched in sugar and syrup. He didn’t eat any better at home, even when offered the same foods he always eats. He’s lost 20 lbs since admission to the hospital. 8/10/16 Nurse Jennifer H? came and did blood work. GFR 19 (low) Na (Sodium) 129 (low) Potassium 3.6 Chloride 88 (low) AGAP 22 (high) C02 19 (low) Glucose 249 (down from 287 in hospital) Creatine 3 (high) Calcium 8.5 (low) BUN 107 (high) 8/16/16 Dad tells Mom he can’t breathe and she calls 911 who send the paramedics. He feels like he can’t catch his breath and wants oxygen but can’t get it. They tell him they can’t give him oxygen unless he gets in the ambulance and goes to the hospital. He decides he’d rather not breathe than go through all that hassle again for nothing, so he declines. They tell him to sleep sitting up so the fluids don’t build back up around his heart and lungs. Getting involved in my father’s health care

On Aug 6 my parents were supposed to go on vacation; something they haven’t done in many, many years.  Instead Dad asked Mom to drive him to the hospital.  I should have realized then that he was dying, because he’d never go to a doctor or hospital willingly.  He went because he couldn’t breathe and I assumed Chuck and crew were with him while he was in the hospital and that Chuck would make sure that everything was happening as it should.

On Aug 11, I think, Dad returned home, so I thought he was better, but he wasn’t out and about with Chuck.  That was fine with me, as I’d prefer he rest, but it wasn’t until Chuck came to me on Aug 18 and asked what I thought of Dad’s condition.  Since he meets with him every morning to go over the work day schedule, I was taken by surprise, and told him I never see Dad except asleep on the couch.

Aug 16 was all consuming, as I had to send out an alert about Geoffrey Cat kittens being passed around like playthings at the Paramount Grill in Gainesville by Christine Janks of Carson Wildlife Center.  Eddie Serio of Black Jaguar White Tiger had gotten his minions to file false complaints about us, alleging that we pay for likes, and without even contacting us, Instagram shut down our account and we lost hundreds of thousands of fans.  Instagram is proving to be difficult to contact about the matter.  LaWanna is losing her mind over it and emailing me every few minutes in her panic.

Dad can’t breathe, so Mom calls the paramedics.  Jamie texts me and says, “why are there paramedics at Grandma’s house?”  We rush over and the paramedics won’t give him oxygen unless Dad will get in the ambulance and go to the hospital.  Mom & Dad both insist that nothing is ever done for him at the hospital and won’t go.  They are right about no lasting good coming of these last two emergency trips to the hospital, but I haven’t been involved enough to know why.

We get him all hooked up and breathing better.  The paramedics have told him to sit up as much as possible because the fluids building up around his lungs are drowning him.  Later Jamie and Justin came by and spent about an hour talking to Mom, and somewhat to Dad, who’s mostly sleeping, and have Justin’s father, a doctor, on the phone.

Meanwhile, Peek came up with a new booking flow for ticket sales and wanted to implement it on our website.  Usually I’d insists on doing it myself, because I don’t want them installing back doors and malware, but I was so otherwise consumed I gave them access.  The end result was that they managed to slow BigCatRescue.org down from about 9 sec load time to over 30 sec and the booking doesn’t work on mobile, which is how we book half of our tours.  I’d like to scream, but I can’t because I had to go listen to Jamie and Justin’s report about my father’s condition.

I’m grateful that my son in law is a vet.

I’m thankful for another perfect FWC inspection by Steve Hough.
I’m grateful that he understands Ms Claws is not a good release candidate and I think he will be an advocate for having her moved to our permanent population.  I know the FWC can be retaliatory for us trying to end the private exotic cat trade in FL, and that they could kill her, or turn her out to be eaten by coyotes, or send her to some horrible back yard breeder.  We are all on edge until it’s confirmed that she can stay with us.  She’s just totally oblivious to her surroundings and wouldn’t last a day.  https://bigcatrescue.org/mrs-claws/

As much as I hate it when Howie is away (Sunday - Thursday this week) it does give me the chance to appreciate what we have because I know our time together is limited, and I want to make the most of it.

I am glad to have colleagues who help catch these criminals.  Sent to PeTA and HSUS
I have asked my source for better intel, that can actually be acted on, such as the address of Trisha Meyer, and testimony from Paul ?, but figured I'd copy you in case this helps in any way.

Here is what I was told:

Last weekend, or maybe Monday, Trisha Meyer drove to Tim Stark's place, Wildlife in Need, in Indiana.  A worker there loaded 3 tiger cubs who had just aged out of cub handling, into her car.  She said they were going to live with her in Texas.

She said she got the cubs for free, but had to pay for other animals.  She told the worker he could marry her to avoid deportation, so hopefully we can get an address.  She's currently sexting him and seems eager to have him join her, her 4 kids and house full of monkeys, a bobcat, a fishing cat, a tiger she got earlier, and these three new cubs, including one named Portia.

He's on the lam because he's here illegally and needs to work places that will let him bring his geoffroy cat and cougar.

I realise this is all hearsay, and it's doubtful that I will get exact locations and testimony, but figured you may have other pieces of the puzzle.

Today we are meeting w/ an attorney who may be able to help us with our case against the FWC claiming authority over all wildlife.  I’m thankful that Howie has so many friends and has made this alliance possible.

Gotta say, I love Skype because that saves a lot of driving, although today we will be on the road for about 6 hours.

I’m glad to have such a great support group and especially thankful that my mother does right now.

I just texted Mom to see if she wanted to walk.  She usually doesn’t on Wednesdays, but I thought she may want to today from being so keyed up.  She replied that she’s had a house full today, including her sister and her husband, Ron, who my dad hates, Carolyn Linville, a friend of hers from WVA, Emily Stairs, a nurse friend of hers and a home health nurse for Dad.  I’m sure Dad is hating every bit of that.

I appreciate that Gale is always happy to jump in and do what is necessary.  We’ve had two keepers reach into one of the tiger cages to get at poo and their excuse was that it rolled away from the fence, so today Gale piled up dirt inside the cage wall to prevent that.  I helped a little but she had already done most of the work before I found her at it.

I love that we are changing hearts and minds.  Sometimes I worry, when I see one of our interns who has photos on their social sites from a couple years ago, of them petting cubs.  It makes me wonder if they are spies here to harm the cats or if they are just stupid.  I don’t know how anyone can know the horrors of cub handling and not want every trace of that removed from their lives.

Today we won 7-0 in front of the Board of County Commissioners
So, I’m thankful for that, but even more thankful I don’t have to drive in rush hour traffic to and from work every day.

I’m extremely grateful that my father is supposed to be discharged from St. Joseph’s Hospital North today.  He’s been there since Saturday for dehydration.  The kidney doctor says his kidneys are fine.  No one seems to know why he keeps getting so dehydrated and short of breath.  His lungs are in great shape, which is amazing since he smoked up until his heart attack in 2011 or so.

Back to our win.  Florida Hospital wants to build an urgent care center at the corner of Gunn and Citrus Park Lane? in the D1 parking lot.  We are fine with that, but they wanted an extra access road that would eat up the available traffic allowances for the area that were paid for by Chris Daye and were to include our traffic, once he builds his two hotels.  We have been trying to work with Trey Traviosa and the hospital partners; even offering to pay part of the improvements, but I think they thought they could just bulldoze over us.

Howie did an awesome presentation to the BOCC and we won 7-0.

I can almost hear Chuck and Trundy Stairs's voice

(Chuck holding up a rattle snake our dad shot at our home on Castleberry Road in Odessa, FL)

telling the tale of the old Stairs Family Homestead, during this maiden voyage of the Big Cat Rescue drone.  On 6/14/66 Harold and Sara Stairs bought 10 acres in Odessa, FL.  I remember my father saying he had grown up in a house with no windows in the middle of a pasture that was once Lynn Anderson Dairy.  He went to school in the little shack in Citrus Park that is now a historical monument.

On the new 10 acres, an old army barracks was converted to a modest little home that became the gathering place for the Stairs clan on holidays.  The Stairs tried a number of business ventures there, including bee keeping, a rabbitry, a dairy and a nursery that specialised in Bonsai trees.

I have so many fond memories of this tract of land that seemed to be perched on the edge of the world.  It was so far out in the middle of no where and the road ended about a quarter mile away.  Then it was a little dirt path that ended at the house.

On 10/12/73 Harold Stairs died of an aneurysm.  He had been born in 1912.

In 1975 we built our own house.  We were the original DIY family.  We set the timbers deep in the ground and built the house up on the stilts.  I remember my father and I falling off the roof, two stories up, as we were trying to hammer in the shingles at the lower corner.  Falling into the sand, only our pride was hurt.

Chuck learned to drive a motorcycle in our yard, and I whined about having to water the trees all the time, but look at them now!  We had an above ground pool and so many pool parties and sleep overs.

Coming home with one of my first "dates" for a family dinner, I remember my mother, Mary Stairs, bolting past us at the door, with a shotgun under her arm.  She said she was going to "get that armadillo!" and my date nearly ran the 15 miles back to town; thinking that was going to be our dinner.  (My mother never killed an animal in her life, to my knowledge)

In the 70's my dog, Mitzka and I would hike through what was then orange groves and cypress stands to Lake Alice where I would swim and cave dive as deep as I could hold my breath.  I remember there was such a celebration in 1981 when the mortgage was paid off and burned.

In 1983 Vernon and Mary Stairs built a house on the next plot to the east and gave it to me to get me and Jamie out of the ghetto.  We lived there till 1984 or so and then I moved to a series of homes that I was buying and selling on Smitter Road, Lemon Street and Sheldon Road before ending up here at the "island."

On 4/18/2000 Sara Stairs died.  She had been senile for a long time and kept us on our toes, as she would run off in the middle of the night.  It seemed there would be no more family gatherings of the Stairs clan and the original, tiny little house has set barren to this day.

Chuck moved into my home in about 1988 and still lives there today.  I'm sure he could tell so many more stories about the land and its occupants.  In the mid 2000s Vernon and Mary Stairs moved to Big Cat Rescue and revived family dinners.  We meet and eat frequently to enjoy the wonderful family love we share.  I love them all so much!

My father had to be rushed to the hospital again today. He was supposed to leave for vacation today and it would have been their first vacation in many, many years. I told my mother, "He's allergic to relaxing." He's dehydrated and feeling awful. It's been very hard for him to deal with his ailing heart and failing health. Life is so brief, and beautiful. I plan to make the most of every minute.

I’m really thankful I didn’t lose my Dropbox folder for this diary
when I moved to a new 8 TB drive!

I love that Jamie is so capable and completely wrote the Bobcat Rehab Class and created the quiz for it.

I am thankful for Calvin Coolidge’s piece on persistence, as it served me today and just about every day.  Today it was Salsa not working right and an alert that had to go out today.  I just kept trying different things until I finally succeeded.  I’m exhausted.

I’m thankful that Howie completed his law degree
even though he knew mid way that he didn’t want to be a lawyer.  This was his response to a cease and desist letter we were sent for asking a restaurant not to allow Christine Janks of Carson Springs to bring Geoffrey Cat kittens to her fundraiser.

Ms. Henderson although I have a law degree I am not an attorney.  As an executive here I handle legal matters for the sanctuary by engaging the attorneys who represent us. On average we have allocated about $250,000 per year for the last five years for litigation in support of our mission to end what we view as mistreatment of animals.

I have reviewed the correspondence, and please understand I don't mean this to be confrontational, but very frankly the only remarks that I can find in the correspondence that I view as untruthful and potentially slanderous (or perhaps more technically libelous since in writing?) are the statements in your email which make absurdly false statements about our intentions.

I don't plan to spend time corresponding with you further on this. If you decide you want to litigate the matter, please address the service to me.

    Thank you.

I’m am grateful that we do raise enough money to fight the lawsuits we have to fight and to provide our people with the tools they need to educate the public and care for our cats.  Yesterday I bought 4 iPad Air 2’s and Otterbox cases for our tour guides.

I look forward to our trip to PAWS.  They are holding a conference, where Howie will be speaking and then a Big Cat Summit to see how everyone can finally get behind the 3 pronged approach Big Cat Rescue has been working on as part of a Big Cat Coalition since 2011.  It’s about time. I keep reminding myself something Wayne Pacelle told me years ago; “You can accomplish anything if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

I am thankful that Howie drags me off to meet and greets.
I know it’s important but I would never speak to anyone if left to my own devices.  I’d be quite happy on a deserted island.  18 months ago Howie dragged me along for a tour with a medical software rep named CJ and his wife.  They brought Bawa Jain.

Dr. Bawa Jain serves as the Founding Secretary General of The World Council of Religious Leaders, which is the direct outcome of The Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders that brought over 2000 of the World’s pre-eminent Religious and Spiritual Leaders to The United Nations for the first time in 2000.

Yesterday Bawa Jain called me and said he was being interviewed by a group who are trying to raise awareness and compassion for animals.  Dr. Jain told them they should come to Big Cat Rescue, because we are leaders in that area for raising awareness and compassion for apex predators.

Today I’m happy that Howie is giving a tour to Kim and Jake from Rep. James Grant’s office.  Jamie has been friendly to our cause and we are going to ask him to sponsor our state bill to put the management of captive wildlife back in the hands of the citizens, rather than the hands of the governor appointed commissioners who are all hunters.

Hi, I’m Carole Baskin and I’ve been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/

I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.
