Turned away from every convent in Manila for being Filipina, Venerable Ignacia del Espíritu Santo built one herself with a needle and scissors. When Spanish colonial convents refused to accept native Filipina women, Ignacia left home with almost nothing and began a quiet life of prayer and honest work near Manila's Jesuits. Other women joined her, and the community she never sought official credit for became the first religious congregation for native Filipino women. "She just had her love for Jesus and her willingness to live it out in the open." Want to keep living Ignacia's story after the episode ends? Legend says the True Cross grew too heavy for an emperor to carry — until he traded his crown for bare feet. This feast remembers Emperor Heraclius's return of the recovered True Cross to Jerusalem in the 600s. Tradition holds that the Cross wouldn't budge, and the city gate wouldn't open, until Heraclius set aside his royal robes and crown and carried it in simple humility instead — a reminder of why the Church still lifts up the Cross every year. "It's a symbol that love, even suffering love, wins in the end." This feast's challenge doesn't have to end when the episode does. Our Lady of Sorrows stood at the foot of the Cross and simply would not look away. This feast honors the depth of Mary's suffering as Jesus's mother, from Simeon's warning that a sword would pierce her heart, all the way to Calvary, where she stood beneath the Cross to the very end. Because she knows real suffering, Catholics have brought their own sorrows to her for two thousand years. "That is what real love does. It does not look away." Today's challenge is just the start. Pope St. Gregory the Great gave up a life of power in Rome for prayer — then used the papacy to feed the hungry and send missionaries to Britain. Gregory walked away from his post as Prefect of Rome to become a monk, only to be called back and eventually elected pope in 590. As pope, he wouldn't sit down to eat until Rome's hungry were fed first — and he never forgot a group of enslaved boys he'd once seen in the Forum, eventually sending missionaries across the sea to bring them, and all of Britain, the Catholic faith. "Who are these boys, and where do they come from?" Today's challenge is just the start. Servant of God William Atkinson became a quadriplegic before he ever became a priest — then became the Church's first quadriplegic priest anyway. An eighteen-year-old novice when a tobogganing accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, William trusted that God's call on his life hadn't disappeared. In 1974, with special papal permission, he was ordained — going on to spend thirty years as a beloved chaplain and theology teacher. "What his body could no longer do on its own, God found a way to accomplish through him anyway." William's challenge doesn't have to end when the episode does.
