  • Meet Bryant Schauer of Schauer Angus
    • Background and Beginnings: Bryant Schauer started in the cattle business in 1989 after purchasing eight head at his uncle's production sale. Coming from a family of grain farmers and ranchers, he was influenced by his grandfather's Angus cattle and supported by mentors such as his uncles Bob and Jim Carlson. Over 36 years, Bryant has built a successful cattle operation.

    • Upcoming Sale Details: Bryant is preparing for his 36th cattle sale on Monday, March 9th at 1 p.m. at Faith Livestock Commission. The sale will feature 67 yearling bulls and 10 two-year-olds with a focus on calving ease and high maternal qualities. Visitors can come early for coffee and donuts, with a meal served prior to the sale.

    • Breeding Program: Bryant's breeding approach emphasizes functional cattle with low maintenance, good disposition, and adaptability to extreme weather. He highlights new sires like Woodhill Reality and Boyd Justification, boasting strong DNA results and high performance.

    • Community and Mentorship: Bryant attributes part of his success to community support and mentoring from experienced cattlemen like Gene Lund, the ranch seller who provided valuable guidance. Lund was also an active community member, remembered for his dedication to helping others even at an advanced age.

    • Communication and Outreach: Bryant has a website, Schauer Angus, where buyers can view the sale catalog. His sale will also be featured on Facebook and DV Auction, allowing for online bidding. There is also a link to the sale on CattlemansCorner.com.

    • Personal Reflections: Reflecting on his journey, Bryant shares about the influence of his father, who, although not fond of cattle, was supportive and instrumental in decision-making processes. • Kim Siebert of S Diamond Angus

The conversation revolves around Kim Siebert from Henderson, Nebraska, preparing for his 36th annual cattle sale on March 7th. This year, the highlight includes the sale of champion bulls, including the heaviest black Angus weight-per-day-of-age bulls from the National Western Stock Show. The sale will be conducted both in-person at the farm and online via DV Auction, and comprehensive information, including pictures and data, is available on the new website, sdiamondangus.com.

      • Siebert has collaborated with Bullseye GX, a company focused on addressing congestive heart failure in cattle, particularly in the Angus breed. This year, Siebert's bulls have undergone testing for heart failure risks using predictive genomics, with results available on sale day. Siebert mentions significant reductions in heart failure incidence in herds employing such tests and plans to test replacement heifers and future AI program bulls to make informed breeding decisions.

      • The mild weather conditions in Nebraska are discussed, with Siebert mentioning a surprisingly comfortable winter, likely affecting the conditions of the upcoming sale. There is also a brief discussion on how Nebraska weather impacts cattle compared to Montana, illuminated by a friend's experience who preferred Montana's climate to Nebraska's extremes.

      • Kenny Rogers of Wagon Wheel Ranch

Hale Broadcasting conducted an interview with Kenny Rogers from Wagon Wheel Ranch in Yuma, Colorado, discussing the operations and historical background of the ranch. Kenny detailed how the ranch, originally started by his grandparents with commercial cattle, transitioned to raising registered Angus in 1950.

Over the years, the ranch has adapted to changing marketing trends, moving away from traditional stock shows to online platforms for their sales, such as DV Auctions and their website. This shift to more efficient and less time-consuming sales methods was influenced by technological advancements and changes in industry practices.

Kenny also highlighted the current weather conditions affecting agriculture in the region. While the weather is favorable for calving, he mentioned the critical need for moisture for pastures and crops due to increasingly dry conditions and high winds in northeastern Colorado.

      • Lauren Frick of Twin Creek Ranch

Lauren Frick from Twin Creek Ranch shared the story of how she and her husband, both with backgrounds in animal science and meat science, developed their ranch in Kansas after taking over a cow herd three years ago. They focus on breeding Scimital cattle for their maternal and carcass qualities. Their interest in this breed is rooted in Lauren's lifelong involvement with it, and the ranch aims to raise cattle that can thrive without intensive management.

Lauren also spoke of her experience with livestock judging, which she became involved in during college and has greatly influenced her perspective on cattle breeding. The couple values hands-off ranching and is enthusiastic about bringing their bulls to market.

The ranch is preparing for its second annual bull sale scheduled for March 7th, facilitated through an online platform, DV Auctions. The sale will be conducted as a bid-off to provide buyers with flexibility and an opportunity to view the bulls at Waldo, Kansas, while the bidding is held online. The sale will transition into extended bidding at 6 p.m., allowing potential buyers to place bids until there are no new bids for five minutes.

      • Cole Epley MLM Gelbvieh Sale
        • Upcoming Bull Sale: Cole Epley of Epley Cattle Company discussed the upcoming bull sale on March 1st, 2026, near Nelson, Nebraska. The sale will feature 38 bulls, primarily balancer breeds including black and red varieties, with a few three-way cross bulls (quarter Simmental, quarter Gelbvieh, and half Angus or Red Angus). The event includes viewing and a meal, with sales beginning at 2 pm.

        • Genetic Program and Benefits: Epley highlighted the benefits of using Gelbvieh genetics and balancer bulls, stressing their efficiency in heterosis. Epley prefers a 50-50 mix of Angus and balancer, adding a bit of Simmental genetics for versatility. This genetic strategy supports good udder quality, maternal abilities, and strong carcass traits.

        • Dams of Merit Distinction: Epley's program ranks eighth nationally for dams of merit and distinction, with 58% of their cows qualifying—far above the 5.7% average in the Gelbvieh breed. Despite their smaller herd of 150 cows, they maintain high standards in cow development and productivity.

        • Breeding and Management Practices: Epley employs minimal supplementation for heifers, which increases their independence and keeps them moderate in size. This practice also enhances breed-back rates and better prepares cows to teach their calves self-sufficiency, supporting a strong genetic foundation.

        • First Generation Breeder Jerry Senn

Jerry considers himself a first-generation cattle rancher who has been involved in the cattle industry for most of his life despite not having a college education. His career began in local sale barns, and he currently works as a livestock order buyer and focuses on red Angus cattle.

Jerry is organizing an upcoming sale of 46 red Angus bulls taking place at Faith Livestock in Faith, South Dakota. The event time zone is Mountain Time and it happens on February 28th. In addition to the red Angus, the sale will include red Angus Influence and half-blood Fleck V cattle known for good performance and longevity.

Jerry emphasizes the importance of maternal qualities and foot quality in breeding red Angus cattle. He uses a mix of Canadian and American genetics to improve specific traits like length of body and additional weight. He recently invested significantly in herd bulls to enhance his breeding program.

        • Travis Engelhard of EF1 Cattle Co

Travis Engelhard of EF1 Cattle Company, located near Carpio, North Dakota is conducting an online sale that ends today!

"Both sides of our families, my wife Summer and I ancestors were homesteaders out here in North Dakota and basically we've had livestock and cattle around forever. Started out with this registered deal about five, six years ago. Been using the Horned Herford Bulls for many years on our Black Cows to produce F1s and decided to throw our hat in the ring and start raising some ourselves. We raise Horned Herefords. We have a smaller commercial herd of F1s like I said. But we're a true proponent of the Line 1 Horned Hereford cattle. They started out with several lines of these Herefords and ended up with one single line that made it through the line breeding. That's where the history of these Line 1 Horned Herefords comes from. We like them because you get a little more extra hybrid vigor than even a straight horned cattle do or the pulled. We like the Herefords for their thriftiness and ability to convert to forage. Also for their temperament is really good and when they're crossed on an Angus, it's there's nothing better than a true F1 Baldy for a range cow."

Now is this a live sale or online only?

"This is an online sale put on the platform of DV auction. We like how they handle things there. It's a timed event that closes on Wednesday at 8 p.m."

That was Travis Engelhard with the EF1 Cattle Company out of Carpio, North Dakota. That sale closes tonight at 8 p.m. Find a link directly on cattlemanscorner.com.

Jerry discusses how the farm incorporates these genetics and the advantages they provide, including extended production lifespan and improved calf weaning weights.

Jerry elaborates on the farm's crossbreeding strategies, utilizing various maternal and terminal breeds to enhance genetic diversity and performance. The discussion highlights an upcoming sale where Grund Beef Genetics will offer around 100 bulls, focusing on growth and carcass traits. • Beastrom Gelbvieh Ranch Bull Sale

The Cattleman's Corner is brought to you nationally by the American Gelbvieh Association.

Speaking of those Gelbvieh genetics, we have Brittney Spencer from the Beastrom Gelbvieh Ranch on the phone. Let's talk about the history of your program and then that sale you have today.

Well, my parents actually got started with my grandfather with his dad on the 1970s. They primarily ran a commercial cow-calf operation with cross-bred, more Angus-based type cattle. We're located in Pierre South Dakota, just five miles northeast of Pierre. The sale will be at the ranch on the 23rd and looks like we're going to have a nice day and we missed all the snow. So thankful for that, I guess, on some levels, but moisture is always welcome.

It should be a good day for you today.

Yeah, we're really looking forward to seeing everybody here at the ranch later today. We're excited to go through the cattle, show everyone what we have and try to help our customers find what they need for their programs.

What are the strengths of the Gelbvieh, do you believe?

I think that you get kind of the best of both worlds. You get a cow that is extremely hard-working, extremely versatile as far as environment goes. I think that whether you are trying to stay more on the Purebred Gelbvieh side or the Balancer side from a feedstock perspective, it gives you a really great option to offer your customers. A lot of our customers, they like to toy between different percentages, so they try to keep anywhere in between that 45 to 60%. So with the Balancers, you're offering anywhere from 25% Gelbvieh to 75% Gelbvieh.

More on that Gelbvieh breed in future episodes, but right now a reminder, find a link directly to Beastrom Ranch and their sale today on CattlementsCorner.com.
