For over 50 years, the standard has been that Staph aureus bacteremia and endovascular infections must be treated with a bactericidal antibiotic, like beta lactams or vancomycin. A new study suggests that bacteriostatic antibiotic, like clindamycin, could be used to treat MRSA bacteremia.

Recent studies have suggested that a short course of antibiotics, compared to longer durations, are just as efficacious for many common infections. The appropriate duration of urinary tract infections for men, by definition complicated, is uncertain due to the risk of developing secondary prostatitis. A new study evaluates 7 vs 14 days of antibiotic treatment of UTIs in men without fever.

The Delta variant has made it clear the COVID pandemic is far from over. Recent studies have suggested that immunocompromised patients may have a reduced or no antibody response to the currently available COVID-19 vaccines. On August 13th, the CDC and FDA recommended that patients receive an additional vaccination. Hear Dr. Geoff Wall and guest, Dr. Nicole Alvey, on how immunocompromised patients need an additional dose, and how to prioritize their care. Drs. Wall and Alvey also share preliminary thoughts on booster vaccines based on the U.S. Surgeon General’s announcement on 8.18.21 recommending booster shots available at 8 months; however, the Biden administration announced on 8.25.21 that booster shots should be available after 6 months of the last dose, pending ACIP review.

A landmark paper published in 2002 set the standard for Targeted Temperature Management (TTM) by having hospitals use TTM protocols to "cool" patients for a period of time after cardiac arrest to improve neurologic outcomes. On June 17th, 2021, the TTM-2 study was published and changed this standard. What is the future of the TTM modality in cardiac arrest patients?
