The Celtics kept a good pace with the Warriors in the first quarter, and despite losing the battle of the second quarter, Boston was down just seven points at halftime.
And then the third quarter happened.
When Durant was brought in by the Warriors – the NBA’s biggest free agent acquisition since LeBron went back to Cleveland – the Warriors envisioned quarters like this.
Golden State was zipping the ball around the floor on the offensive end, and the defensive effort – a source of frustration for Steve Kerr thus far this season – was omnipresent during this time, as the Warriors forced the Celtics into difficult shots and forced turnovers.
There was even an alley-oop sighting that reminded everyone that these players are superhuman.
With the Warriors putting the heat on the Celtics – up 68-51 with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter – Durant contributed to one of Golden State’s 10 steals with a tip of an Avery Bradley pass. Curry gathered possession and with Durant racing down the right side of the basket, Curry lobbed a pass to the sky where Durant was there to throw down the slam, nearly shaking the Garden floor in the process.
The Warriors scored 18 straight points through a hellish quarter for the Celtics, and after a David West jumper to mercifully end the quarter, Golden State had effectively sealed the game 86-57.
