Loyola Marymount University Athletics Director Dr. William Husak announced on March 12, 2014, that Mike Dunlap, a 1980 graduate of LMU, has been hired as the 26th head coach of the men's basketball program.  Dunlap returns to the Westchester campus with more than 30 years of college and NBA coaching experience.

Coach Dunlap was the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats for the 2012-2013 season, becoming the first coach in NBA history to win three-times as many games as the year before.  During that season, the Bobcats set franchise records for the most fast break points and the least number of turnovers per game.  Before arriving in Charlotte, Coach spent six years as an assistant coach in the professional and college ranks.  Prior to his work as an assistant, he spent nine seasons as the head coach at Metropolitan State College in Denver, leading his teams to a pair of Division II National Championships in 2000 and 2002 and earning NABC Division II Coach of the Year honors in both of those seasons.  Coach Dunlap, whose teams went to the NCAA Tournament in each of his nine seasons, posted an overall record of 248-50 (.832), winning five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles. 

In 2006, Coach Dunlap left Metro State to become an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets under George Karl.  In two seasons with the Nuggets, he helped the team to a 95-69 record that included a 50-win season in 2007-08 that was the team’s first in 23 years.  Dunlap then spent the 2008-09 season as associate head coach at the University of Arizona under legendary coach Lute Olson and the 2009-10 season as associate head coach on Ernie Kent’s staff at the University of Oregon before joining Steve Lavin at St. John’s in 2010.  During the 2011-12 season, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the team and served as acting head coach in all but four games while Coach Lavin recovered from surgery to treat prostate cancer. 

Coach Dunlap’s previous head coaching experience also includes three seasons with the Adelaide 36ers in Australia’s National Basketball League and five seasons at California Lutheran University.   From 1994-97, he led the 36ers to a 59-33 record (.641) and three straight appearances in the NBL Final Four, including advancing to the Grand Final game in 1995. Before going to Australia, Dunlap was head coach at Division III California Lutheran from 1989-94, where his teams posted an 80-54 record (.597) and won three straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles from 1992-94, while also advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1992 and 1994.   His college coaching experience also includes five seasons at his alma mater, Loyola Marymount University (1980-85), one season at the University of Iowa (1985-86) and three seasons at the University of Southern California (1986-89).

Throughout my nearly 21 years of coaching Coach Matt Smith always enjoyed attending coaching clinics and spending time with other coaches discussing the game and growing his knowledge. He began directing coaching clinics in Chattanooga, Tennessee because he wanted to improve the game locally and take advantage of the brilliant basketball minds already living in the area.  He wanted to see the best teachers of the game in the gym with basketball players, showing the concepts they were teaching.  So that is what he created and United Basketball Clinics was founded. Head Coach Cole Hicks he is the Head Boys Basketball coach at North Sand Mountain High School in Alabama.

He just finished 5th year as a head coach and my 2nd at North Sand Mountain. Previously he was at North Jackson High School in Alabama for 3 years. He has won 2 Area Championships and made 2 appearances in the Sweet 16.

He was the JV Boys basketball coach for 8 years at Dade County High School in Georgia and the varsity assistant to my dad, Glen Hicks.

Coach Hunziker a 1996 graduate from Clark County (Kahoka, MO) which is where he gained his love for basketball playing for his father Gary in Elementary school followed by great coaches in Kevin Garner and Greg Buescher in High School. During that time Jaryt knew that he wanted to get into Education and coaching following High School. He attended both Southeastern Community College in Iowa (1996-1998) and Culver Stockton College in Canton, MO (1998-2001) where he earned a BS Degree in Education.  Following college, he coached at both Clark County (boys) and Scotland County (girls/boys) in Northeast Missouri. While coaching the Scotland County girls they played for 3 District Titles winning one in 2011.

He just concluded his 7th season of coaching the Boonville Lady Pirates where his team ended the 2018-19 season at 21-4. Over the last 7 seasons they have won 5 Conference Championships, 4 District Titles, made 2 Quarterfinal appearances which included a 3rd Place finish in Class 3 in 2015 (30-1). Overall record at Boonville is 149-43.  Overall I have accumulated over 250+ wins during that time. 

His wife Amy and him will be celebrating their 15th Anniversary this summer. They have three children Lorelai (11 yrs), Hayden (7 yrs) and Grant (1 yr).

Gary Smith began coaching at the University of Redlands, Redlands, California in 1971-72, following a short stint at San Bernardino High School. Since then, he has compiled an overall record of 439-458, gaining his 400th win at the end of the 2002-03 season. Smith, whose teams led Division III in scoring in 1988-89, 1990-91, 1991-92 and 2004-05, has a 439-458 career mark, 221-221 in the SCIAC. Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

In conference competition, the Bulldogs have gone 221-221 under his leadership. He guided the men's basketball team to the 1975-76 conference championship, which was the program's first title since Smith's senior season in 1964. His teams captured the crown again in 1981-82, 1984-85 and 1989-90. During the 1984-85 season, the Redlands squad finished third at the NCAA Western Regional.

Smith later developed an up-tempo style of play, which led the team to three NCAA Division III National Scoring Championships in 1989, 1991, and 1992. The Bulldogs recently returned to a similar style and recaptured the scoring championship with a record-breaking season average of 132.4 in 2004-05.

Another highlight of Smith's career includes hosting Division I Villanova University in the opening game of the 2003-04 season. Despite suffering the 103-114 loss, the Bulldogs welcomed over 1100 fans to Currier Gym for this exciting match-up. Smith also captured Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament Championships in 2003 and 2004, earning back-to-back titles for the first time since 1959 and 1960.

"His integrity, passion for young people and unselfishness are exemplary not only to Redlands, but to all of college basketball. As a coach, he has served as a role model, positively influencing the lives of nearly 1000 young men who have played Bulldog basketball during his coaching tenure."

Beyond coaching, Smith has served as a professor and chair for the Department of Physical Education, teaching numerous activity and academic courses throughout his tenure. He has served as the advisor to all physical education minors, supervised internships, and taught in the University's first-year seminar program.
