Welcome to Chapter & Pillow. In tonight's ad-free episode, unwind with a soothing, human voice reading Kenneth Grahame's charming tale, The Reluctant Dragon. This slow-spoken narration is crafted to help you quiet an overactive mind and ease into a deep, restful sleep.
Tonight, we meet a curious young boy who discovers that the legendary dragon living in the nearby downs isn't fierce or frightening at all—he is actually thoughtful, kind, and prefers writing poetry to fighting battles. When the villagers call upon Saint George to defeat the creature, the boy helps orchestrate a clever plan to show everyone that peace is far better than a pointless fight.
• The Author’s Story: (Long, but fascinating) Kenneth Grahame wrote this story during a very stressful time when he was working as a high-level executive at the Bank of England. He felt completely trapped by the cold, rigid rules of London's financial world, so he spent his evenings making up stories. He created this poetry-loving dragon as a gentle reflection of his own quiet desire to leave the corporate world behind and live a simpler, more creative life.
In 1903, a gunman snuck into his office and shot at him three times at point-blank range! Grahame miraculously ducked at each shot and survived, but the terrifying shock made him realize life was too short to waste in a cold, rigid corporate environment. He officially quit the bank in 1908 and packed his bags, escaping far away from the city to a quiet country home right on the peaceful banks of the River Thames. His marriage was difficult, but his life revolved around his young son, Alastair, who was born prematurely. They nicknamed the little boy "Mouse," and he became the absolute center of Kenneth’s world. Free from the corporate grind, he continued to write. He eventually turned the gentle bedtime stories he had been telling his young son to comfort him in his illnesses into his ultimate classic masterpiece, The Wind in the Willows.
