Tonight on Chapter & Pillow: Where Stories Drift into Sleep, we begin part 1 of Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless fairy tale, The Snow Queen.
Originally published back in 1844, this beautiful story unfolds across seven different sections. We follow two childhood friends, Gerda and Kay, whose lives are completely turned upside down when Kay falls under the spell of the mysterious Snow Queen. It’s really a gentle adventure about how far Gerda is willing to travel through magical places just to bring her lost friend home.
In tonight's episode, we listen to the very beginning of the tale. This is where a mischievous mirror breaks and scatters tiny shards all over the world, setting off the strange chain of events that eventually carries Kay away into the cold north.
This soft, ad-free narration features slow pacing to help you quiet your thoughts, let go of the day, and drift off naturally.
Behind the Story: Hans Christian Andersen loved traveling, but he was a famously anxious traveler who was terrified of fires. Because of this, he never left home without a thick coil of rope packed in his luggage so he could escape out a window if needed. It is a funny, very human detail for a man who spent his life writing about brave characters going on epic journeys.
