A Saskatchewan couple is making headlines, after appealing to corporate sponsors to fund their “dream” wedding. Yep you heard that right. And while you may laugh, they’re actually doing ok. Jason Mielke and Rebecca Hansen, a couple in Moose Jaw, Sask., have set up a website to crowdfund their wedding by asking for corporate sponsors.J ake LaMotta, the former middleweight champion whose life in and out of the ring was depicted in the film Raging Bull, for which Robert De Niro won an Academy Award, has died, at the age of 95.  And ending with some sad news today...Wiarton Willie, Canada’s iconic prognosticating albino groundhog, has died at the age of 13.

A classroom program aimed at teaching Canadian elementary and high school students how to detect fake news in an era in which almost anyone can publish information is under development. Called NewsWise, the idea is to enhance general news literacy among students aged nine to 19, an increasingly important skill set when so many readily accessible news accounts are unreliable or simply fabricated.  

Bathurst New Brunswick has suggested new rules for Halloween - expected to pass in early October. They would forbid anyone older than 16 from trick-or-treating, and puts a 8pm curfew in place. A Calgary woman who received two photo radar tickets in a matter of 10 seconds while visiting Edmonton earlier this year says she wants the second ticket rescinded.

Compensation paid to TransLink’s board of directors cost taxpayers well over half a million dollars last year.  For 2016, combined payments to the board that administers the region’s transit and transportation cost a total $649,000.

That was up about 13 per cent from a total of $574,916 in 2015, according to a Financial Information Act Filing and Remuneration Report.  The board is made up of 10 directors and one chair, Don Rose, who was paid $100,000 for attending 60 meetings.  That works out to just about $1,700 per meeting.
