B.C.’s political parties will be in line for millions of dollars of taxpayer funding as one of the key changes to the province’s political fundraising laws.  The B.C. NDP unveiled sweeping new donation rules on Monday, including a ban on corporate and union donations, and a $1,200 cap on individual donations.

Brett Gilley, Natural Disaster Expert and Educator at University of British Columbia, joins us to talk about the second earthquake to hit mexico in as many week and how this situation is not unlike what could happen in Vancouver.

In a unanimous vote, the standing committee on Alberta’s economic future scrapped Bill 203, a private member’s bill which proposed to keep the province on mountain daylight time year-round. The move would have seen Alberta one hour ahead of British Columbia in the summer while being two hours ahead in the winter. Alberta and Saskatchewan would have been on the same time year-round.  Rather than move ahead with the proposed “Alberta Standard Time,” the committee will instruct the province to have discussions with other jurisdictions on a continental shift away from daylight saving.  MLA Thomas Dang was behind bill 203 and joins the show to talk about today’s decision and whether or not there’s still a chance that Alberta, and maybe Canada, will see the end of daylight savings time.

A new study in the U.S. has found teenagers are maturing more slowly than past generations.  Some of this is good: High school kids today are less likely to be drinking or having sex, versus their counterparts in the 1980s and 1990s.  But the study also finds they are also less likely to go on dates, have a part-time job or drive.  

Dr. Shimi Kang is the Medical Director for Child and Youth Mental Health for Vancouver and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia.  She has written to well known parenting books: The Self‑Motivated Kid and The Dolphin Way: A Parent's Guide to Raising Healthy, Happy, and Motivated Kids.  She’ll weigh in with her expert opinion on why today’s youth are postponing major milestones.  

The possibility of obliteration is overwhelming- whether by nuclear weapons, earthquake or Hurricane. Today, President Trump delivered the “Rocket Man” speech at the UN, and Mexico suffered a horrendous earthquake that killed at least 140 people.

A Calgary woman who pretended to have cancer, and then claimed to be a Fort McMurray wildfire evacuee to cash in on donations has been sentenced. The Emmy’s were last night! Big winners were The Handmaid’s Tale, Big Little Lies, Veep,  and Lena Waithe from Master of None. She became the first African-American woman to win the best comedy series writer category. Sticking to the Emmys, there’s been some outrage over Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s surprise appearance at this year’s event.

President Donald Trump made his debut at the United Nations today, using his first appearance to urge the 193-nation organization to reduce bureaucracy and costs while more clearly defining its mission around the world. But while Trump chastised the U.N. – an organization he sharply criticized as a candidate for president – he said the United States would “pledge to be partners in your work” in order to make the body “a more effective force” for peace across the globe.
