This weekend, millions of people around the world joined in solidarity marches  to promote women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, freedom of religion and to protest certain health care changes coming under the new Trump administration.

While on the surface the march felt like a good idea it did bring up some tough questions. Where were these women during BLM marches? Why are we only marching now, when women around the world have been oppressed for years?

And what about reports of violence? At Edmonton’s rally, Rebel reporter Sheila Gunn Reid was allegedly hit in the face by a man, who was then defended by other protesters at the rally.

The Vancouver Park Board is meeting to decide whether or not to initiate a vote to ban whales in captivity. If the motion is passed, when we go to the polls during the 2018 municipal election a question may be asked on ballots such as “Do Vancouver residents support keeping cetaceans in captivity?”

This comes after the last two beluga whales at the Vancouver Aquarium died in November. The Vancouver Aquarium is one of two locations in Canada that keeps whales and dolphins in captivity. Marineland in Niagara Falls Ontario has belugas and a killer whale.

The debate has reached a national level, with Nova Scotia senator Wilfred Moore proposing changes to the Criminal Code which would put an end to cetaceans capacity in Canada.

Calgary mother Tamara Lovett has been found guilty in the death of her 7 year old son Ryan, who died after she refused to take him to a doctor for a strep infection. Lovett gave Ryan holistic remedies like dandelion tea and oil or oregano leading up to his death, where he deteriorated in her apartment for 10 days before eventually dying.

Doctors in the trial testified the boy could have been cured if he had been taken to a doctor and given antibiotics.
