● Dovid, on his deathbed, charges Shlomo to keep the Torah and to pass judgment upon Yoav and Shimi.
● Dovid then passes away after ruling for 40 years and Shlomo takes over.
● Adoniyahu asks Batsheva to convince Shlomo to let him marry Avishag. When Batsheva asks Shlomo to allow this, Shlomo realizes that it’s Adoniyahu’s plan to ascend to the throne so he has Benayahu kill Adoniyahu. He then banishes the supporting Aviasar and issues a command for Benayahu to kill Yoav.
● Yoav grabs hold of the mizbeiach and refuses to leave so Shlomo has Benayahu kill him at the mizbeiach to avenge all the blood he spilled.
● He then instructs Shimi to move to Yerushalayim and tells him that if he leaves, he will be killed.
● Shimi agrees but three years later, he leaves to Gas to chase after two fleeing servants. He is brought to Shlomo for trespassing his decree and is killed.

Dovid is old and cannot be warmed so his subjects bring him Avishag HaShunamis to become his attendant to warm him.
Dovid's son Adoniyahu ben Chagis starts a movement to gain support to become king, getting support of Yoav and Aviasar but not other critical members of Dovid’s court.
He makes a feast and invites a lot of important people but doesn’t invite Nasan, Benayahu, or Shlomo.
Nasan tells Batsheva that they should approach Dovid and tells her to go first and he’ll follow up with supplementary information.
They do and Dovid swears to Batsheva that Shlomo will take his place and then has Tzadok and Nasan publicly anoint Shlomo in Gichon as king and then has them bring Shlomo back to sit on Dovid’s throne.
Adoniyahu and his guests overhear the celebrations of Shlomo’s anointment and Yonasan ben Aviasar informs Adoniyahu about Shlomo’s anointment.
All of Adoniyahu’s guests depart and Adoniyahu runs and grabs hold of the mizbeiach and word reaches Shlomo that Adoniyahu wants him to swear not to kill him.
Shlomo says that he will not kill Adoniyahu if he remains loyal, Adoniyahu bows before Shlomo, and Shlomo sends him home.

Hashem becomes angry at Klal Yisrael and Dovid ends up deciding to count them against the advice of Yoav.
After almost 10 months, Yoav finally produces the result of the census to Dovid and Dovid regrets having counted them and confesses his guilt, asking G-d for forgiveness.
The next morning, Gad HaNavi tells Dovid in G-d’s name that he can choose one of three punishments: seven years of famine, three months of pursuit, and three days of pestilence.
Dovid chooses the pestilence in order to fall into G-d’s hands and not human hands.
After 70,000 are killed, Hashem stops the malach in Yerushalayim by the threshing floor of Aravnah HaYevusi.
Dovid davens that Hashem should spare the people and strike him and his family down instead.
Gad HaNavi comes to Dovid and tells him to build a mizbeiach there.
Aravnah greets Dovid and when Dovid asks to buy it, Aravnah generously asks Dovid to pay any price and offers cattle, tools, and firewood for free.
Dovid insists on paying and after doing so, builds a mizbeiach and brings korbanos.
Hashem then answers his prayers and ends the pestilence.

Dovid sings a Shirah (which parallels his Shirah in Tehilim 18) about how Hashem is just and good, Hashem saved him from his enemies, and Hashem even allowed him to defeat his enemies.
He then ends with praises of G-d for the past and for the future salvations as well.

There is a three-year famine and Hashem tells Dovid it’s because Shaul had killed Giv’onim.
Dovid asks the Giv’onim what he could do to appease them and then say that they want seven descendants of Shaul for them to hang in Giv’as Shaul.
Dovid spares M’fiboshes ben Yehonasan but gives them Armoni and M’fiboshes Bnei Ritzpah and five sons of “Michal bas Shaul and Adriel.”
They are killed and hanged and left out for a long time while Ritzpah protects the bodies from decomposing.
Upon hearing of Ritzpah’s actions, Dovid takes the bones of Shaul and Yonasan from Yaveish Gilad as well as the remains of the seven people who were killed and buries them all in Tzeila by the grave of Kish and Hashem is responsive to the prayers of the people.
The Pelishtim fight with Dovid and the giant Yishbi V’nov almost kills Dovid but Avishai strikes him down, resulting in the soldiers not letting Dovid fight anymore.
In another war, Sibchai HaChushasi strikes down Saf, Yishbi V’Nov’s brother.
In another war, Elchanan of Yarei-Orgim strikes down Galyas, a third brother.
The fourth giant brother, who had 24 fingers and toes, mocks Israel and is struck down by Dovid’s nephew, Yehonasan ben Shimah.

● Sheva ben Bichri blows shofar and declares that Yisrael has no share in Dovid and he leads Yisrael away while Yehudah stays.
● Dovid returns to Yerushalayim and supports but locks away his ten concubines.
● Dovid then instructs Amasa to gather men of Yehudah by a certain time but Amasa misses that time so he tells Avishai to take men and battle against Sheva instead.
● Avishai and his men followed by Yoav and his men meet up in Giv’on and Yoav, faking brotherhood, kills Amasa. At first, the men are disturbed and don’t move but once Amasa is covered and moved, they join Yoav to battle Sheva. Yoav gathers more men on the way and they start to besiege the strongly fortified city where Sheva is.
● A wise woman (possibly Serach bas Asher) calls out from the city asking Yoav to make peace as he should have from the start. Yoav explains he has no intentions of destroying the city and that all he wants is Sheva, so she promises to throw his head over the wall. They indeed throw Sheva’s head over the wall and Yoav sounds the shofar causing the army to disband and return home.
● The Navi then lists the officers of Dovid’s court and their positions which features Yoav as the commander of the army.
