Chicks Talking Footy

LAURA KANE

One of the great things about our show is that we get to meet people involved in the game from  administrators, coaches and players through to grass roots footy. Even better we get to meet influential women in our game. And our guest on the first show for 2023 is no exception.

We were super excited to welcome to Chicks Talking Footy, Laura Kane the Acting General Manager of Football Operations.

The Chicks came back with a bang! It’s our 8th season on air with the original draftees all still talking footy together. Fi, Motty, Bec and Bree chatted to Laura Kane, AFL Acting Manager of Football Operations about the upcoming AFLW season and the fact that there are 15 teams that can still make finals in the AFL. We paid tribute to the great Buddy Franklin with a rap from Bec!

Fi and Sasha caught up on the footy news – will the new Tasmanian team be called the Tassie Devils? Joel Selwood joins Melbourne Storm and Liam Shiels steps out of retirement to join Clarko at North. But the big news is that it is Grand Final week and the W Awards were nail biting right to the end which we dissected! Bec also joined us as a fan for the Feeling the Fans segment that she had invented only 3 weeks before.

Fi was joined by Kirsty Buchanan, mad Swans supporter and convert from the NRL! Together they dissected the umpire corruption scandal and paid tribute to the Heather Anderson a former Premiership player from the Adelaide Crows who passed away this week.

They reviewed the semi final games – one of which was played around the ‘Stormaggedon’ that delayed the start of the Crows/Pies game and later delayed play again after quarter time! However, the Crows stood up and made there way to the Prelims. North also dominated the Tigers at Punt Rd oval.

Fi also caught up with super fan and coordinator of the Ruby Demons, Katie Purvis to talk about the Dees stella season during our ‘Feeling the fans’ segment.

Fi and Sasha caught up with Jordy Allen from the Pies about being named in the All Australian squad this year, the strong performance against the Bulldogs at Victoria Park in the first round of finals and some of the preparation the team will be doing in the lead up to the semi-final game against the Adelaide Crows in Adelaide.

Jordy Allen is a strong leader, she previously captained Vic Country in the 2018 Under-18 Championships and was also a member of the AFL Women’s Academy that same year. Allen impressed down back in her debut season in 2019, and has continued her upward trajectory over the past few seasons. She also offers great versatility, able to spend time both up forward and down back credit to her medium build and read of the footy. It was a pleasure to chat with her after a stellar season!

Bec and Fi launched a new segment called Feeling the Fans…look it’s a working title but we wanted to hear from actual fans about how they feel about the shenanigans at their Club. Mikey Cole, passionate Saints fan was the first guest on FTF and he was on to discuss the recent sacking of Brett Ratten and hiring of previous Saints coach Ross Lyon. Is it ever good to go back to an ex?

The Chicks were basking in the after-glow of the AFLW Pride Round on the show this week! Fi flew to Sydney to watch her beloved Hawks wear the Pride Guernsey for the first time and tragically loose by 1 point with 4 seconds to go. We chatted to Tanya Hosch, Social Inclusion Manager at the AFL and Collingwood Champion Chloe Molly.

Rachael and Fiona also apologise in advance as for the first time the hosts were 100% Hawthorn supporters.

The Bombers broke a record for quickest turn around in CEO’s on VFL/AFL history with the controversial appointment on Andrew Thorburn. We caught up with Jason Tuazon-McCheyne founder of the Purple Bombers to dissect what this means for the rainbow community.

We ate some trolls at our dinner table – Steve Price and Jeff Kennett have been spouting some controversial views (again) and we debated whether the quality of AFLW games has been lower because the competition has grown too fast or whether it’s the impact of two seasons in one year.

Plus Motty and Breeza gave us all the trade news – hint you’ll need some basic maths.

Sasha and Fi debriefed the AFL Grand Final although Robbie Williams was definitely the highlight of the day for anyone but Cats supporters! The footy news was changing by the minute before the show with movements trades, retirements, contracts and caching positions. The big news of the week though was Joel Selwood who has made it very hard to dislike him.

We also caught up with Bulldogs AFLW champion, Gabby Newton about the Bulldogs season so far.

It’s AFL Grand Final week and we bought Gabby in from Cats Pride (LGBTI supporter group of Geelong) to co-host alongside Fi to bring in the supporters perspective. We also caught up with Sarina from Rainbow Swans for a balanced view.

The dinner table was an emotional segment this week with the news coming out of the Hawthorn Football Club that morning. There’s been shockwaves and heartbreak right through the AFL community and Clarko and Fagan have stood down while investigations take place. Our love goes out to our First Nations brothers and sisters.
