Joya Misra, Ph.D., is a Professor of Sociology and Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts. Her research and teaching primarily focus on social inequality, including inequalities by gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and educational level. Nearly 1 in 4 children in the U.S. are in single-parent households, and in the majority of two-parent households both parents are working, yet childcare is generally unaffordable and paid leave is not available to most U.S. parents.
