Born in Port Colborne, Ontario, Derek Amell's journey to becoming one of the NHL's most respected officials is remarkable. Starting his officiating career at the age of 21 while studying Chemical Engineering Technology at Durham College, Amell quickly moved up the ranks thanks to his size and calm demeanor on the ice. He worked in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before earning a minor league contract with the NHL in 1997.

Over his career, Derek has officiated countless historic games, including:
🏒 His first NHL game in 1997 (Penguins vs. Hurricanes)
🏒 The 2011 Winter Classic & 2017 Coors Light Stadium Series
🏒 The 2014 Sochi Olympics Gold Medal Game

He's also been a trusted voice in the NHL Officials Association, serving on the NHLOA Executive since 2017.
