    People are discovering all kinds of benefits of meditation. I think that’s a good thing. But when it comes to meditation, the Bible’s been here all along. Meditation, or another word like it in the Bible is contemplation, is something God’s people have been doing for thousands of years.


    Christian meditation is learning to focus and discipline your mind in a way that blocks out the noise and chatter in your brain. Whether it’s all the digital noice constantly barraging you with email, texts, social media, video games, streaming entertainment, or just the voice in your head that is constantly wandering into ruminating on past conflicts or hurts, or worry about possible future stories or troubles (using the power of your imagination in anxiety-building ways). And as the teaching of Jesus emphasized in Matthew 6, these kinds of wandering thoughts and imaginations usually do more harm than good. They make us embittered victims, and put us in a self-protective disposition of hostility and anxiety. And all of this puts even more stress and anxiety into your disposition and into your body. 


    So in Christian meditation, you’re intentionally focusing your inner voice and thoughts on re-integrating and re-calibrating your body and mind with God’s presence and love in your life. 


    Now… when you try to meditate this way, you’ll discover that this is hard to do. Your mind will constantly try to wander into other imaginations. Other stories. When you catch yourself doing that, don’t get frustrated with yourself when it happens. It’s normal. Just pick right back up with where we are in our meditation and try to keep your focus on what I’m saying as best as you can. But one reason why a podcast like this is helpful is that it helps keep your mind’s focus on meditation. 


    This is a time for you to meditate and focus your thoughts and imagination on the light-bringing, life-giving presence of your Heavenly Father who is 100% present with you right now.


    Remember Jesus says in Matthew 6:6 NIV

    “…When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.”


    Jesus wants you to imagine a reality that you can’t see.


    So in this moment, we’re carving out a quiet time to be alone with God. Using your biblically guided imagination to feel and experience God’s presence, and everything that means, in a way that replaces stress and anxiety and worry and anger with God’s peace and joy and love. 


    “…When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.”


    Right now, use your biblically guided imagination to imagine what Jesus is telling you to imagine – it’s just you and God alone together. So imagine how you are alone right now with the I AM who created the entire universe! As if it’s just you and him! He is infinite, so he is 100% present with you right now without being any less present anywhere else. 


    So try to focus your mind right now on feeling your body alone in the awe and the wonder and the transcendence of the presence of God. 


    Imagine how God is fully present with every cell in your body.


    Jesus says he is unseen, but fully present with you even when you’re behind closed doors alone in your room. The I AM is always infinitely present with you. 


    This is God’s promise to you everywhere in Scripture. Even in his very name — the ancient Hebrew name for God in the Hebrews Scriptures is Yahweh — the ancient Hebrew form of the verb, HE IS. God’s very name is always in the present tense because he wants you to know and envision that HE IS always present with you fully.


    Use your biblically guided imagination to envision and feel this reality right now — God infinitely and fully present with you and in your body right now.


    Jesus quoted from the Psalms more than any other book in the Hebrew Scriptures. And on more than one occasion he talks about how God’s Spirit is speaking to us in the Psalms. Jesus had a very high view of the Psalms in the Hebrew Scriptures being the word of God for us.


    So Jesus is saying what the Psalms in the Hebrew Scriptures had already said… 

    Psalm 73:23 ESV

    I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. 


    This is the language of imagination. God is giving you this scripture, written by his Holy Spirit, so that you can picture his reality with your imagination. God continually with you — you continually with God — in this moment — he is right there holding your hand.


    So use your biblically guided imagination to envision what God wants you to envision. 


    Take a deep breath in and slowly let it out…

    And try to focus your mind on feeling this reality — you with God so close and intimate that he is right there holding your hand! Try to feel it into your body as you let go of tension and anxiety and let the muscles and nerves and tendons soften all throughout your body. 


    Try to feel your whole body rest in this promise. God is 100% with you right now. 


    I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. 


    Feel the awe and the wonder and the transcendence of the I AM’s infinite, life-giving presence in your whole body. Let it calm the tension of your own anxieties and fears.

    All your life you’ve been wiring your brain. Unfortunately a lot of that wiring is dysfunctional because it is merely horizontal. A lot of times our narrative of reality is based upon our very limited finite perception of our circumstances, and it’s missing the biggest reality in reality — God. The source of all reality. The source of all that exists. In him all things hold together the Bible says in Colossians 1. 


    Colossians 1:16-17 (NIV)

    For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.


    So much of our life has been spent wiring our brain to see reality in an unreal way. A lot of it is based on the pseudo narratives of entertainment we watch.


    So the Scriptures say in Romans 12:2 not to be conformed any longer to the patterns of this world (just culture) but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Rewiring of your brain.) 


    Biblical Meditation and praying through Scripture is teaching/wiring our brain to see reality vertically. Not just horizontally. 


    Philippians 4:5-8 (NIV)

    The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. …Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.


    In other words replace the low ceiling and small room of your own understanding of reality with the awe and the wonder and the transcendence of the reality of who God is and his nearness to you and his presence with you and his Lordship overall circumstances in the entire universe and in every detail of your life. You are finite but God is infinite.


    So let’s take some time to replace all the reasons your mind imagines why you should be anxious — replace that imagination with the better image of God‘s nearness and presence. 


    As you’re lying or sitting there, imagine presenting your body — your whole self — and everything in your life that is causing you to be anxious or stressed or angry — imagine submitting that now before God. His presence.


    God is present. He is in this with me. And I can trust him.

    1 Corinthians 6:11 NIV

    “…You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”


    I wanna come back to a verse we looked at a few months ago… 

    Hebrews 10:10 (NIV)

    …We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.


    Hebrews 10:19-22 (NIV)

    19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through …his body, …22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.


    This is all imagination language. Somehow the body of Jesus on the cross paid for all the sins I have committed with my body and in my heart.


    So this passage paints a mental image for us of entering what would be the scariest place in the universe for guilty people — the holy presence of God – but because of the body of Jesus offered on the cross on our behalf, we can now enter with confidence. Not because of our righteousness but because of Jesus’s bodily sacrifice for us. So he says to draw near to God with full assurance that our guilty conscience has been cleansed and our bodies have been washed. This is imagery. But I think it’s the kind of imagery that if we can envision as true for us it makes a big difference in our lives.

    “…One of the great problems of spirituality in our day and age that so few people feel safe enough to admit is how separated we feel from God. We rarely experience God’s presence throughout our day. “Love, joy, and peace” does not describe the felt experience of many Christians.”


    I think one of the reasons we don’t experience God‘s presence is because we have a low-grade sense of guilt that we’re unworthy of him and unsure where we stand with him in his presence. So we don’t take the solitude and the silence to imagine/envision God‘s presence with us. His love for us. The author of Hebrews invites you to draw near to God with the confidence of envisioning yourself cleansed and washed pure and holy and safe in the presence of God.


    Use your imagination to envision this reality – so that your brain will actually wire to this reality and it will hardwire this very identity into your brain. This is what the Bible means by being transformed by the renewing of your mind.


    Use your imagination to envision your entire body as being washed completely pure. Imagine your guilty conscience completely wiped clean.  


    Envision yourself — see yourself – this way. Completely cleansed. Washed completely pure. Made holy by Jesus once for all. Completely and forever washed. Completely and forever made holy. Completely and forever made righteous in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God who has put his seal on your body. There is no greater authority than the Lord Jesus Christ and he has declared you washed, sanctified, and justified.


    “…You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”


    You can draw near to God with …full assurance …having your heart sprinkled to cleanse you from a guilty conscience and having your body washed with pure water. 


    …You have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Often we are in a state of clenching our muscles in our body without even realizing it. So focus on realizing it now — with each exhale focus on letting all your muscles soften and relax.Breathing in, feeling more calm and relaxed.     10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.”


    In this Genesis 3 world — this side of the new creation — we cannot see God. So “I keep my eyes always on the Lord” is full of poetic, imaginative meaning, none of which is literal. 


    The ESV translates it…

    Psalms 16:8 (ESV)

    I have set the LORD always before me;

    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.


    But the imaginative language of eyes always and at my right hand is the language of nearness and presence. This is a kind of deliberate mindset to imagine/envision the true reality of God’s presence always with me and in me.

    “Worship and joy start with the capacity to turn our minds’ attention toward the God who is always with us in the now.”


    Envisioning God being with us and in us is a kind of seeing with what Paul calls “the eyes of our heart“ in Ephesians 1. 


    So come back to your breathing and focus on feeling your body relaxing and letting go of anxiety and tension as you imagine/envision this reality right now in this present moment.


    Psalms 16:8-10 (NIV)

    8 I keep my eyes always on the LORD.

    With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

    9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,


    Your imagination is always felt into your body. It’s how God made you. When you wake up from a stressful dream you feel the stress of your imagination into your body. Sweat. Heart racing. Fear. Worry. Unease. But all that was just your imagination. Your imagination is constantly being felt into your body. Your body’s biochemistry. 


    And that’s also true when it comes to your ability to imagine the reality of God‘s presence and light and life and love. And that imagination affects your body’s biochemistry too. 


    (9b-10)

    “...My body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.”


    Notice that the “me” David is referring to includes “my body.” That word “me“ is actually translating into English the Hebrew word for soul.


    So…

    Psalms 16:10 (ESV)

    For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,

    or let your holy one see corruption.


    Here’s what’s important that I want to emphasize over and over in this podcast. The biblical idea of soul — especially in the Hebrew Scriptures — is not the idea of your spirit as opposed to your body. Rather it’s the idea of your entire self, including your body. The Hebrew word for soul basically means your life. 


    This is why the NIV translates it simply as me.

    “...My body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.”


    You are your body. You are more than your body. But not other than your body. The biblical view of your body is that it is an eternal part of your soul. An eternal part of who you are. That’s why you will have a bodily resurrection in your eternal salvation. 


    Your body – your brain, your spine, your entire central nervous system, all your nerves, your organs, your muscles, all of your cells — your body is part of your soul. Your body needs spiritual life and the rejuvenating sense of God’s presence and love. 


    Christian meditation is a time to spiritually focus your mind and your body on God‘s presence and God‘s love for you. And to use your biblically guided imagination to feel this reality into your body. 


    I keep my eyes always on the LORD.

    With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

    Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,

That somehow spiritual rejuvenation comes by focusing on the spiritual, not the physical. Focusing on the soul and not the body. And you would be wrong. Biblically wrong.

    The problem with a lot of early Christian heresies — and they have stuck around for thousands of years — is that they somehow separated the body from the soul.

    A good example of that is in…

    This is powerful imagery for us to embrace and envision through Christian meditation.


    Imagine/envision this:


    YOU — including your body washed.

    YOU — including your body sanctified.

    YOU — including your body justified by Jesus himself and by God’s Spirit.


    Your body exists for God. And your body is a means by which Christ physically lives on earth.


    The body … is … meant for … for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? 


    Christ came to redeem and restore your body.

    Your body is part of Christ himself.


    Your body is eternal and will have a resurrection from the dead.


    Right now your body is God’s temple. He dwells in your body by his Holy Spirit. 


    1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV)

    “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”


    You can experience a certain degree of the glory of God in your body right now.


    So imagine this. Envision your body this way. Present your body to Christ right now in this moment. 


    Your whole body surrendered to your creator so that you can be filled with his glory forever.


    The body … is … meant for … for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? 


    …Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? …So glorify God in your body.

    Christian meditation focuses you on biblical imagery showing how you — your body — utterly depend upon God’s life-giving Spirit at every moment. Paul says, “In him we live and move and have our being” (Act 17:28). Of course most people don’t realize this or think of themselves this way, and even WE live our lives often ignoring God. But regardless whether we acknowledge it or not, it’s God who gives us life at every moment we’re alive. Every cell in our body.


    Continue to focus on breathing deeply and being aware of and relaxing your whole body with each exhale…

    Let’s recalibrate our mind and body to reality by imagining this reality and experiencing it in meditation. Imagine every cell in your body being given its life by God’s Spirit.


    This imagery can bring relaxation and relieve stress from your body.


    Let’s meditate on the imagery of…

    Ephesians 5:18 — “Be filled with the Spirit.”


    It’s an amazing thing to think – the God that created this universe is in me! In my body. The life-giving, universe-creating power of the Spirit of God is in me! I want his power to fill me! Fill every cell in my body!


    Continue to focus on breathing deeply and being aware of and relaxing your whole body with each exhale…

    Let’s imagine that now as we focus on a few more areas where we typically hold our tension and anxiety in our body.


    Your body is filled with God’s Spirit — No fear. No insecurity. No threat.


    Let’s meditate on the imagery of…

    Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

    …The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, [and] self-control.


    (This is what true holiness is.)
