On today’s program, I’m celebrating the 28th anniversary of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which began on September 20th, 1996, at CHMR / C101.5 FM at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. The station is now called INDI 101.
For all of our anniversary programs, and yes, some years I forget to do one, I try to create something new. Sometimes it's clever, and other times it's just a simple, dumb idea that's relatively simple to implement. This show is the latter. Since the show is now 28 years old, I've decided to base it on that number.
So, you'll hear tracks that are either 28 seconds long, scores that are 28 years old, films with the number 28 in the title, the 28th track on the album, take place in 1928, or were written in 1928 featuring composers Mark Snow, John Murphy, Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Terence Blanchard, Joseph Conlon, Marc Sharman, David Arnold and Dominic Frontiere.
Admittedly, this is silly, but it was quite enjoyable to put together. In any case, I hope you'll enjoy it.

In 2014, author, film studies academic, and film musicologist Emilio Audissino published the first edition of his book THE FILM MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS.
In 2021, the book's second edition was published. While focusing on John Williams' music and career by analyzing the composer's approach to writing music, the book also discussed three significant film scores in Williams' filmography: JAWS, STAR WARS, and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
In early June 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Emilio via Zoom at Linnaeus University, Sweden, where he was an Associate Professor. To commemorate the book's tenth anniversary, they discussed its origins and delved into John Williams' musical career, featuring music from many of the composer's most memorable scores.

In this episode, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO pays tribute to a genuine soundtrack hero and pioneer… Intrada Records founder, Douglass Fake, who passed away at the age of 72 on July 13, 2024.
Who was Douglass Fake? Well, one of Doug’s closest friends and colleagues, Joe Sikoryak, wrote a beautiful obituary a few days after Doug’s passing on Facebook. You can read it HERE!
I personally never met Doug, but I did communicate with him and Roger Fiegelson, Intrada’s executive producer, many times when requesting albums to play on my soundtrack show, which began in 1996. Doug and the rest of the crew at Intrada have been supporting the show for over 25 years, and I do remember Doug telling me that if I ever needed anything, I should call or email him or Roger and they’d send whatever I requested down immediately. It didn’t matter if it was a new release or a release that came out ten years ago; if they had it in stock, they’d send it down.
We planned to release this episode a few weeks ago but a few things popped up that slowed down production (work and illnesses). On top of that, the fine folks at Intrada Records were guests on Robert Emmett's soundtrack radio program "The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show," where they produced their own three-hour tribute show to Doug on Saturday August 24, 2024. So, not to step on any toes, I decided to delay the release of my own tribute show to today.
So, on today’s show, we’ll be playing not only selections from Intrada’s extensive soundtrack library, but also messages of remembrance from fans such as Amer Zahid, Chris Malone, Ian Clark, Jason Drury, Jim Wilson, Nick Zwar, Lee Wileman, and Victor Field.
Doug’s was a legend in the soundtrack community and we owe him a debt of gratitude for bringing much joy into our lives. Thank you, Doug. You will be missed.
Enjoy the show!
PS – During the program, you'll hear me mention that Chris Malone produced a heartfelt tribute to Doug on YouTube. You can see that video by clicking HERE! I also mentioned an episode of The Goldsmith Odyssey dedicated to the production of Intrada Records RIO CONCHOS recording. You can listen to that episode HERE!

On Sunday, June 16th, 2024, Jason Drury traveled to London’s Barbican Centre to watch and listen to music performed by the world’s greatest film music orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra. The evening celebrated the orchestra’s 90th anniversary of performing film scores. Under the direction of the equally great Dirk Brossé, they performed suites from twenty scores, some well-known, some underrated, all pure quality.
Listening to all that wonderful music gave Jason an idea. Why not produce an Archive Show celebrating the music of the LSO featuring scores all performed by this wonderful ensemble? So, that’s what we are going to do today. In addition, as with the concert, Jason will play one cue from the film or a small suite. And, because it is a ‘concert’, you will hear several of these suites with as little contribution from your trusted host as possible.
Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio’s celebration of the music of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Enjoy!

The latest in the “Cinematic World of Sonic the Hedgehog”, follows Knuckles (Idris Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train middle-aged cop Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior. The series occurs between SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 and SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3.
Award-winning composer Tom Howe has composed the original music for Paramount+’s original series KNUCKLES. In May 2024, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST, Jason Drury talked to Tom about his work for the series via Zoom from his home in London, England. Also during the show, we will hear more music from the hit series, Knuckles.

This episode's origin comes from my time recovering from gallbladder surgery last month. I was looking for something to watch when I saw Richard Donner's TIMELINE on my Plex server. I hadn't watched the film in over 20 years... 20 YEARS?!?!?!?!... and so I thought I'd put it on to see if it was as bad as I remembered. It wasn't all that bad, but Brian Tyler's score really irritated me. So, after watching the film, I listened to both Tyler's replacement score and Jerry Goldsmith's rejected score and decided to write some notes. Well, you know me; I ended up writing about 700 words. For a brief moment, I thought about resurrecting my blog, but I hate sharing my writing, so I decided to turn it into a podcast episode. As I continued to write, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, my script was 2814 words long.
In addition to writing about TIMELINE, I also wrote about action music, which led me to write about action cues that subverted the norm using two examples by Michael Giacchino (STAR TREK and MEDAL OF HONOR: FRONTLINE). Then I remembered an interview from the early 80s where Jerry Goldsmith talked about the function of film music and writing a specific action cue for the 1971 film, WILD ROVERS. So, I wrote about that. I then remembered to write about my experience at TriCon 2024 here in Kitchener last winter and discuss my newfound appreciation of Graham Revell's THE CROW. I then concluded with a birthday shout-out to David Shire, who turned 87 on July 3rd, the day of this recording.
So, after finishing my FAVOURITE SCORES OF 2023 episodes, I recorded and edited this new episode, which I'm happy to share with you today. I really enjoyed the entire process of producing this episode. I liked having the opportunity to inform and educate by using specific examples instead of just doing what I've been doing over the past, however long it's been. This type of show feels more like what I do on Randy Andrew's THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS (aka SOUNDTRACK ALLEY) than a traditional CSR episode.
Anyway, let me know what you think. Also, the name is temporary. I had no idea what to call what I was doing so I just called it SOUNDTRACK POTPOURRI, which is so NPR lame.
Enjoy!
