Kathy, Mark, and Burk discuss Spanish filmmaker, Oriol Paulo’s, The Invisible Guest. It's a film you might have missed, but it’s something you really need to see if you like the kind of twisty, mysterious, moody yarns that put you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning and pull you through some harrowing suspense that you can’t always see coming. There are plenty of unexpected left turns and a lot of the moral ambiguity we expect in the best neo-noir mysteries. Fantastic performances by Mario Casas and Bárbara Lennie as a couple cheating on their respective spouses who find themselves in a tricky situation that could ruin their marriages - or much worse… but do they make the right choice? Is saving a marriage and a career worth what they’re paying? This film has a fun and complex story, a great cast, plus it’s a beautifully shot thriller set in and around Barcelona and Catalonia, and definitely worth checking out.

The Cinemondo Lawgivers gather on Planet Backlot to discuss a strange episode called THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS and all hell breaks loose. Many ideas are presented, and many questions remain.
It’s the one where the people on planet Beta III in the C-111 system have a strange system of government overseen by a mysterious religious figure named Landru. They all seem like peaceful and friendly citizens of an oddly earth-like town/planet when suddenly at 6PM, they all go completely bonkers for 12 hours of unhinged violence. Landru apparently gives them this time of lusty inhibition to make up for all the worshipful obedience. But is that a good way for the folks of Beta III to live? Can the intrepid members of the Enterprise landing party intervene and deprogram the cult of Landru? And is this a good episode of Star Trek, or one of the few that don’t quite live up to the rest?
Written by Boris Sobelman (based on a story by Gene Roddenberry), and directed by Joseph Pevney.

Kathy, Mark and Burk dig into another true crime documentary series and discuss the details, so make sure you watch this fascinating 3-part series before listening to the podcast. It’s a case filled with twists and unexpected reveals, so it’s a good idea to watch it first without knowing anything. But once you’ve seen it, you’ll definitely want to join us for a deep dive into this disturbing, brutal and sad story about the depths of obsession that some people have for collecting old documents pertaining to the Mormon Church. Mormonism is a relatively recent belief system, so actual documents from the time of its creation can still be found out there in the wilds of vintage book stores and document dealers. It can certainly become an obsession, and evidently it can also become a deadly obsession. A trio of bombings that killed two and injured one is the crime… but as with most true crime stories, there’s so much more going on under the surface.
Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

The Cinemondo gang takes aim at a true classic of film noir. It’s a movie that’s so sharp and shockingly alive, it’s almost timeless. Peggy Cummins and John Dall are the perfect deadly duo who meet cute shooting guns in a state fair sideshow and things only get worse from there. It’s one fantastically staged crime spree after another and it raises relevant questions and addresses the almost fetishistic appeal that firearms have over some folks. This one hits all the balloons; it’s got one of the most intense femmes fatale and one of the all-time classic suckers who just can’t resist each other, or the alluring thrill of crime. Just one more job and then we’ll be able to get away from all this. Right. Just one more job, then we’ll stop. I promise.
Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

Special guest Mark Maddox (Monster Attack! Podcast) joins the Cinemondo Red Shirts for a look at another beloved episode of the Original Series. COURT MARTIAL, as the episode title suggests, is a courtroom drama where Kirk is the defendant, doing his best to prove that he’s innocent of murdering an old rival. The evidence looks bad, but there has to be some kind of explanation for why the computer screen is showing something that couldn’t have possibly happened! Spock and Elisha Cook Jr. are fighting for Captain Kirk’s freedom, knowing that there just has to be a clue! It’s a fun episode that uses some pretty advanced ideas about computers to figure out Kirk’s legal mess. This episode also has a classic fight scene, and as usual, some great guest casting.
Written by Don M. Mankiewicz and Steven W. Carabatsos, directed by Marc Daniels.

Documentary filmmaker JOE BERLINGER joins Kathy, Mark and Burk for a deeper look into his Netflix documentary series CRIME SCENE: THE VANISHING AT THE CECIL HOTEL. It’s a fascinating look into how we see and understand films and series about true crime. What leads us to make our conclusions about the cases we follow and how important are our opinions and our speculation?
Joe takes us into the process and the ups and downs of making a series like this one, and the sometimes frustrating ways viewers interpret crime stories. Is it irresponsible to share our theories with large online audiences? Are we being respectful and fair? Joe gives us a lot to think about.
Kathy and Burk know Berlinger from their time working on the West Memphis Three case and they also appeared in PARADISE LOST 2 and 3. They talk to Joe about experiences in front of and behind the camera and how the Elisa Lam case has affected him.
Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY: Another beloved first, classic season episode. It starts off a little confusing in the 1960s version of “present day” and then suddenly the Enterprise is flying through a blue sky and being detected on an Air Force base’s radar… and then sling-shotted into a time travel trip with all the uncertainties and paradoxes and past-changing dilemmas we love about such stories. A jet pilot from the 60s is accidentally brought aboard the USS Enterprise where it becomes clear that he can never go back to his own time or his own family… unless the crew can come up with a way to bypass the butterfly effect and fix the mounting problems they trigger just by being trapped in the past. It’s another episode that hits all the right notes, and is full of memorable moments, some funny stuff and lots of great character development. And some classic “Kirk Fu” fight choreography. Mark is on shore leave, so alternate time Mark (the Mark known as Maddox) is our special guest for this fun one.

The Cinemondo Excavators and their special guest, Lisa Fancher, dig deep into a lovely true story, THE DIG, based on the infamous Sutton Hoo excavation. It was one of the greatest archaeological finds in British history, and changed historians’ view of the Dark Ages.
It takes place in 1939 on a picturesque estate where more than just ancient relics are uncovered. A great cast and an unexpectedly moving story bring this world to life and as the characters carefully unearth evidence of past cultures, they uncover important things about themselves. THE DIG gets into the big questions about life and death and history and the future and how lives that intersect can sometimes have a profound impact. Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan head an excellent cast in this bittersweet and somewhat melancholy drama that beautifully shot and staged and takes place just before the horrors of World War II change everything for everyone. It’s a thoughtful and intelligent film with an uplifting message.
Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

ARENA is one of those episodes of the original Star Trek series that everyone remembers. Kirk fighting the Gorn on the asteroid with the cool angular rock formations. It’s the one where he cleverly identifies some various elements and minerals and builds a radio out of coconuts… no wait… wrong 60s TV series. Kirk does his best when what he can find lying around, but there’s so much more to this episode. There’s an attack on a destroyed outpost, some fun ops on the bridge, and that exciting battle between the two starship captains staged by the superior beings. It’s an episode with everything. Kathy, Mark and Burk are once again joined by our friend and Star Trek
Written by Gene L. Coon (based on a 1944 short story of the same name by Fredric Brown) and directed by Joseph Pevne.
