  • THE RIPPER: A Grim Look at at True Crime

    Send us Fan Mail

Kathy, Mark and Burk take a look at another True Crime documentary miniseries about a serial killer. This one’s about the Yorkshire Ripper who attacked and killed women between 1975 and 1980 between West Yorkshire and Manchester. The series takes a carefully detailed look at not just the facts of the case, but the economic environment and the general sense of hopelessness in the are in those days. A dark time that may have been a factor in the murders and how those murders were handled by the local police. Was enough attention given to this case? Was it maybe mishandled or downplayed because of the perceived status of the women who were being attacked and murdered? Did the police let this brutal slasher get away with his reign of terror for too long? It’s a fascinating look at the politics and the biases that sometimes thwart law enforcement and result in more dead-end leads and ultimately more victims. We review the miniseries and discuss how well it depicts a very distinct time and place and how well it outlines a situation where the police may have failed the women of their community.

Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

  • THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS: Cinemondo Explores Star Trek

    Send us Fan Mail

Hip-hip hoorah! The all-powerful Cinemondo beings venture down to the planet of General Trelane (retired), the Squire of Gothos for an unexpectedly unsettling episode where the Enterprise crew encounters a malevolent being they can’t beat! They’re stumped! What do you do when you’re up against someone who seems to have unlimited super-powers and a certain type of derangement that manifests as a bizarre hybrid of narcissism and sadism? What is Trelane’s deal? Is there any way to stop him? This is one of the classic episodes of the original series, and may have inspired characters and plot lines from later Star Trek incarnations. It’s a familiar trope but done with an unnerving flair, mostly thanks to the fun performance by guest start William Campbell.

Written by Paul Schneider, and directed by Don McDougall.

  • CAPTIVE STATE: Alien Invasion From Another Angle

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo gang discusses a cool sci-fi film that somehow got past us when it was released in 2019, but we’re going to make up for it with this episode. Rupert Wyatt's, CAPTIVE STATE, is a hard science-fiction film that takes the well-worn trope of alien invasion and gives us another perspective on how such a thing might actually feel if the aliens won and actually DID take over the earth . How would we really react? Would some people surrender and allow themselves to be exploited by these entities who seem to only want to exploit the planet and destroy the environment? And despite the dire situation, would there still be people fighting to defend humanity from the anti-human? Whose side are you on? And how do you tell if someone can be trusted? CAPTIVE STATE isn’t the typical action-packed alien warfare film, but it’ll give you plenty to think about. And it’s one of those movies that might make you want to watch it again once you know how it ends. Starring John Goodman, Ashton Sanders, Jonathan Majors and Vera Farmiga.

Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

  • Cinemondo Explores: THE GALILEO SEVEN

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo furry giants take a trip into Murasaki 312 with the Galileo Seven for a look at another fun, exciting and clever episode. Kirk sends his three best friends and some expendables into an unexplored “quasar-like” nebula in a shuttlecraft where they’re pulled down into a rough landing on a planet overrun by mysterious giant, spear-wielding humanoids. Unable to communicate with the Enterprise, the intrepid seven must figure out how to fix the shuttlecraft while being constantly attacked and stalked. Meanwhile, Kirk is being forced into agreeing to leave them behind by a guy whose title is “Galactic High Commissioner” Ferris. Spock comes to terms with his inability to understand emotional humans and aliens who don’t react like machines. It’s a great look into the character dynamics and how humans and Vulcans can be dangerously at odds with each other over leadership and compassion. One of the great character-defining episodes of the series.

  • THE NIGHTSTALKER: The Hunt for a Serial Killer

    Send us Fan Mail

Kathy, Mark and Burk take another dark trip into True Crime with a new Netflix documentary series directed by Tiller Russell called, NIGHT STALKER: THE HUNT FOR A SERIAL KILLER. Richard Ramirez terrorized the city of Los Angeles in the 1980s, and anyone who lived here at the time has very distinct and scary memories of those days. A seemingly random and brutal series of murders, child abductions, shootings, stabbings and horrific murders that were baffling to local law enforcement, until the pieces of the puzzle finally started fitting together. It’s a terrifying story, and we discuss not just the series, but the general personality of the city of Los Angeles in those days, and how it all changed after this and several other brutal crimes erased what was left of this city’s innocence.

Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

  • Cinemondo Explores: SHORE LEAVE

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo Away Team explore the strange, mysterious planet of fantasies and dreams featured in the episode “Shore Leave.” Slightly reminiscent of Solaris and a few other science fiction scenarios that manifest our wildest fantasies and fears. This one takes place mostly on location and seems to have a wider landscape than most of the planets they visit. Written by the great Theodore Sturgeon, it’s not the ultimate Star Trek episode, but it has its moments… and one of the best fight scenes in the history of the show.

  • UNDERWATER: Kristen Stewart Keeps Her Cool

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo aquanauts take a really deep and watery look at director William Eubank's, UNDERWATER, a film that you should probably see in a theater, once we get theaters back. It’s an epic underwater (duh) science-fiction thriller, that starts with a bang and never lets up. We’re way, way, way down there in a deep sea base near an oil drill, and something is smashing up the operation. And this mysterious something is not happy with the invasion by human invasion. Kristen Stewart plays the scrappy mechanical engineer who always has the rational answers and always knows which way to turn in those endless corridors as we rush to find the escape pods before the unseen thing… okay… it’s a monster… before the monster finds them and tries to eat them whole with its giant fish mouth. Thrill packed and fun to watch, but what did Kathy, Mark and Burk really think of this one? Put on your deep-sea pressure suits and ake a deep dive with us and find out. Starring Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, T.J. Miller , Mamoudou Athie and Jessica Henwick.

Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

  • Cinemondo Explores: BALANCE OF TERROR

    Send us Fan Mail

The Romulan spies at Cinemondo Headquarters welcome special guest Mark Maddox to discuss another outstanding episode of Star Trek, “The Balance of Terror,” where we get to meet the Romulans for the first time and experience some suspenseful submarine-style military tactics, some personal tragedies and some interstellar bigotry. It’s a fantastic episode with so much going on, we do our best to cover it in minute detail. This is one of the episodes that makes us love the original series. All of our favorite characters are great here, and the interplay between the tactics and techniques of the two starship commanders is classic wartime cat-and-mouse. Fire phasers, full-speed ahead!

  • MIDNIGHT SKY: George Clooney on Ice

    Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to our first episode of Season 4! Kathy, Mark and Burk take a look at MIDNIGHT SKY, a Netflix sci-fi original feature directed and starting George Clooney. It’s like a couple of different movies rolled into one. You get an adventure across the frozen polar wasteland and a thrilling space adventure with meteor showers and a desperate planetary exploration. It’s a look at what could happen to the earth if we don’t take care of it, and a peek into the future concerning what we might have to do if the human race is going to survive and deadly global event. We might have to load up the truck and move to planet K-23…. a moon of Jupiter that is. Oxygen atmosphere, amazing views of Jupiter… and a chance to start over and maybe do it right this time. Check out the podcast and find out what we think of this ambitious and thoughtful film has some intense moments of action and some great special effects.

  • Cinemondo Explores: THE CONSCIENCE OF THE KING

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo troupe of Shakespearian thespians take a close look at the Star Trek episode “The Conscience of the King” and decide whether it was meant to be or not to be in their list of favorite episodes. There’s a few classic scenes, and few of Kathy’s favorite “Cranky Spock” moments, and a few “first and onlys” but does it live up to the quality of other Trek episodes? The episode itself is a bit of an anomaly in a few ways, but despite our misgivings about the plot and style of it, we still think it’s worth a watch, because, as we’ve said before, ALL episodes of Star Trek have something that makes them special. And this one has “Cranky Spock.,” but none of the actors in the beloved troupe of interstellar Shakespearians shouts, “Out damn Spock!” Not even once!
