  • Best of 2020 with Special Guest Jeff McCarty

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo gang takes a long, deep dive into the year 2020 and what we’ve been watching, with our special guest Jeff McCarty. Definitely a very different year for cinema and a year full of home-bound binging and really missing going out to the theater. There’s been some good releases, though, despite the obstacles. We talk about film releases and various series and we even get into a few films that were definitely NOT released in 2020, but are important enough to bring into the discussion. Some great recommendations all around, and some unexpected suggestions from the realms of music documentaries and true crime documentaries and everything in between. Check it out and get some ideas for your next home-cinema experience.

We are taking the rest of the year off and will see you all for Season 4 in January!

Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

  • Cinemondo Explores: THE MENAGERIE Part 2

    Send us Fan Mail

Join the Cinemondo commodores and their special guest Mark Maddox for this concluding 2 part episode about The Menagerie Part 2 where we get into the intricacies and details of this very fascinating story. There’s intrigue and adventure and a good deal of courtroom drama, but there’s also a fistfight and the lovely Susan Oliver as a princess and a green dancing Orion slave girl. And according to Commodore Mendez, no human male can resist her! Something mysterious is afoot with Mister Spock, though. He’s hijacked the Enterprise and is taking his former boss, Captain Pike to a forbidden planet for some unknown reason. Why is Spock defying the laws of Starfleet? Why is he seemingly betraying his captain? We follow this story right to the tear-jerking conclusion, and the conclusion is that this is definitely one of the best (2) episodes of Star Trek.

Written by series creator Gene Roddenberry and directed by and Robert Butler.

  • THE BEAST: An Overlooked Classic War Film from 1988

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo gang takes a recommendation from a listener named Nick who insisted that we watch THE BEAST, a war movie from 1988 directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Steven Bauer, Jason Patric and Stephen Baldwin. He claims it’s great. An overlooked gem. An underrated and forgotten classic. Sounds like Cinemondo material, for sure. And guess what? Nick was right.

This is a film that has everything. It’s a bit violent, as war films tend to be, but this one’s definitely about the characters and the interactions between cultures. We’ve got a Russian tank team and a group of Afghani mujahideen fighters going after each other in the desert. It’s part war film, part isolation horror and definitely full of great moments, nicely directed by Kevin Reynolds. You do have to accept the slight strangeness of the Russian tank crew speaking perfect English; they don’t even do Russian accents, but once you get past that, you’re in. Great cast, a harrowing story and according to various sources, it’s pretty accurate with the military gear and ops. There is a pretty memorably violent scene near the beginning and the usual amount of violence you might expect from a war film, but it’s definitely worth a watch, even if you’re not into war movies

  • Cinemondo Explores: THE MENAGERIE PART 1

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo background crew members - and special guest Mark Maddox, examine a two-part and very thrillingly intricate courtroom drama episode of Star Trek. The Menagerie Part 1 famously features footage that was repurposed from the original pilot episode of the show in a way that’s so cleverly constructed and perfectly presented, we were finding it difficult to come up with any “anomalies” with this first episode. Spock is breaking all the rules. Is it mutiny? Does Spock have a reason for kidnapping Captain Pike and lying to Starfleet and Captain Kirk? Or has he just gone mad? You must see the rest of the transmission!!! And after you listen to this episode, you have to join us for part two.

  • TENET: What Goes Around Goes Backwards Around Again

    Send us Fan Mail

It’s not easy to unpack and decode the complexities of Christopher Nolan’s TENET, but the Cinemondo gang gives it a shot and at least does their best to examine this fascinating film and understand what direction it’s going. Nolan’s films often play with the concept of time and other modes of experiencing it, but this one seems to be the most dependent on the idea of traveling in an unfamiliar timescale. Not unlike his earlier film MEMEMTO, we’re pulled along into a concept that makes sense, but only if you’re really paying attention. It’s a James Bond-style international heist with secrets and larger-than-life villains intent on destroying the world, and one of the weapons in this world is an ability to go backwards through time. What can you do with that? How can you use that ability to stop an armageddon? Join us for our attempt to figure out the puzzle that is TENET.

  • THE VOW and SEDUCED: Pulled Into The Vow and Seduced

    Send us Fan Mail

Kathy, Mark and Burk take a look at two sets of documentaries about a multi-level marketing scam gone bad called NXIVM headed up by Keith Raniere, and we decide that it’s best to watch both series - starting with THE VOW on HBO and then for the rest of the story, check out SEDUCED: INSIDE THE NXVIM CULT on STARZ.

We review THE VOW, directed by Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer, which is a 9 episode series that gradually guides you through what lured people in, and then SEDUCED, directed by Cecelia Peck, which continues and expands on the story, and in 4 episodes, it’s shocking, haunting and brutal. If you watch the news, you know that justice eventually found the right people, but it’s not an easy journey. Featuring Catherine Oxenberg, India Oxenberg, Bonnie Piesse, Sarah Edmondson and Mark Vicente.

It’s a harrowing look into a nightmarish cult with a despotic overlord and followers who at first glance seem to be these numbed-out gullible people who got played by a maniac, but as you watch, you realize that the folks who survived this horror aren’t what you might expect.

  • Cinemondo Explores: THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo Tranya tasting party - along with our Special Guest Mark Maddox, beams over to the Fesarius to explore THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER. I think it’s pretty clear that this is one of the true classics of the series. Great writing, directing and fantastic performances by the whole crew. It was the first of the regular episodes to be filmed (aside from the 2 pilot episodes) and it really does a great job of introducing the Enterprise and the crew. The character interplay is great, and the story is one of the very best alien encounters episodes. Kirk and crew take a big chance with a vasty superior alien entity known as Commander Balok, whose distorted and scowling visage reminds Mr. Spock of his beloved father. Join us for an in-depth look at this favorite episode.

  • Mystery Date: Binging Is Still a Thing

    Send us Fan Mail

Kathy, Mark and Burk do the Mystery Date routine and surprise each other with movies or TV shows that nobody is expecting to discuss. Burk brings up a recent mystery thriller you might have missed called KNIVES OUT, Kathy revisits one of her favorite TV shows… LOST, and Mark introduces us to a Swedish science fiction film called ANIARA which is adapted from a 1956 poem and involves a spaceship full of people escaping the devastation of climate change headed to Mars, but something causes their massive craft to go off course. Three big recommendations from the Cinemondo gang.

  • NICK SZOSTAKIWSKYJ: Director of ARCHONS and BLACK MOUNTAIN SIDE

    Send us Fan Mail

Our special guest, director NICK SZOSTAKIWSKYJ, talks with us about a couple of films that he wrote and directed, BLACK MOUNTAIN SIDE and ARCHONS, two finely-crafted horror films that were shot in the beautiful wilds of Canada and in realms beyond comprehension. Despite low budgets, these films deliver on the quality of production, casting, story and everything else. BLACK MOUNTAIN SIDE takes us to a remote archeological site where an ancient structure is uncovered in a layer of strata where it doesn’t belong… and something is evidently awakened. ARCHONS takes us along on a river adventure that starts out as a trip into self-discovery, but as will happen.. things go awry. Like horribly awry. Films filled with clever ideas and intelligent details. Both will reward you on multiple viewings, and Nick takes us inside the production and the inspiration and the adventures behind the adventures.

  • Cinemondo Explores: DAGGER OF THE MIND

    Send us Fan Mail

The Cinemondo escaped lunatics take a nice, much-needed break by relaxing in the comfy neural neutralizer chair… and we examine some serious brain tampering in the Star Trek episode Dagger of the Mind. It’s a more “grounded” episode than we’re used to so far in the first season, but it’s still got some great moments and memorable performances, and one of those classic moral dilemmas about the ethics of mind control. Some folks might watch this and see the insidious neural neutralizer device being used at the Tantalus Penal Colony to brainwash the inmates and find it a bit prescient. A machine that tells you what to think? No way! Will Captain Kirk and crew figure out what’s really happening here in this idyllic underground prison? Will poor Kirk survive an overpowering love for Dr. Helen Noel? Will the Tantalus Penal Colony finally update their AC ducts? Take a trip with us as we explore and psychologically unpack this fun episode of Star Trek!
