The Cinemondo gang discusses Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's HBO true crime documentaries PARADISE LOST 1, 2 and 3. Kathy and Burk, along with their friends Grove Pashley and Lisa Fancher, became part of these films and helped start a worldwide movement that was instrumental in freeing Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley from prison in Arkansas. But the horrific murder of Chris Byers, Michael Moore and Stevie Branch has never been solved and is an ongoing mystery. Kathy and Burk discuss what it was like to be a subject of the documentary cameras and how it felt to go through the looking glass into an an ongoing crime investigation.
(Kathy, Mark and Burk are obeying the “Safer at Home” mandate and self-isolating during the present health crisis. This episode was recorded with all of us in our respective homes.)

In this Christmas-themed installment of the INTO THE DARK series, Nyasha runs the gamut of emotions and characters in this one role and tells us all about how it all came to be. We get into inspiration and motivation and empathy with the character. We have a fun conversation that goes into how films get made, and what goes into the process and how exciting and sometimes overwhelming the process can be.

Kathy, Mark and Burk are obeying the “Safer at Home” mandate and self-isolating during the present health crisis. We discuss the new film THE HUNT, released as a first run on streaming by the studios. Can it work? It's a good time to sit in front of the TV and catch up with movies and TV shows. The Cinemondo gang gives some suggestions for what to watch and how to stay sane during strange times. It’s the first episode Kathy, Mark and Burk have ever recorded ALONE - each in their own homes, so forgive the sound quality issues. We’re working on it. Take a listen and get some ideas for what to watch and how to occupy your time.

The Cinemondo gang welcomes special guests Max and John from the excellent Hold My Popcorn Podcast. These guys do a movie podcast… and so do we! So naturally we should gang up and talk about a few of our favorite things together. On this episode we get into the idea of Favorite Scenes…. those film moments that move us or shake us up or impress up with technical skill. Historical moments… touching moments and creepy, haunting moments. What’s your favorite scene? Some of the choices aren’t what you might be expecting, and you might even get inspired to see a film you haven’t seen before. Max and John do a great job of enduring us and bringing some genuinely great film moments to the Cinemondo table.

Kathy, Mark and Burk take a field trip to an actual moving picture theater in Pasadena, California to see THE INVISIBLE MAN. It’s a new take on the old H. G. Wells story about an invisible stranger, and an update on the old Universal film from 1933. Starring Elisabeth Moss and directed by Leigh Whannell. How do filmmakers take an old story and update it to be relevant in 2020? Did they succeed? Is it science fiction or metaphor? Make sure you check out this tense, twisty thriller before listening to our reviews, because we do a deep dive and discuss the whole film.

Kathy, Mark and Burk talk about the Nicolas Cage movie COLOR OUT OF SPACE. Based on an H. P. Lovecraft story about a strange, gene-altering, hallucination-inducing meteorite that crashes on the front lawn of a nice, calm farmhouse owned by a nice, normal family… no… actually it’s Nicolas Cage’s family, so you know there’s already odd stuff going on even before the trippy, interstellar monster-creating meteorite shows up. Join us for some discussion of H. P. Lovecraft and why films based on his stories either work or fail horrible. Unspeakably great, or indescribably awful? Heed the call of the Old Ones and listen!

Writer/Director/Musician Al White joins the Cinemondo gang for a discussion about his gorgeous little film, STARFISH, which we feel a little bad for giving a less than 5 star review. Al tells us all about what’s involved in making a film where you’re in control of almost every aspect of the production - aside from writing and directing, Al does animation, music and evidently has many skills and many projects in the works. It’s a fascinating discussion about a complicated process. We talk about movies and video games and how opinions are shaped around the movies that we love or don’t love.
Check out Al White's other projects and beautiful social media!

The Cinemondo gang takes a deep dive into the HBO series THE OUTSIDER. With only a few more episodes left, we discuss what’s going on so far with this 10 episode series based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. So far we’re only 7 episodes in, so this is a “so far” review of the series. We talk about what we’re liking about the series, and what story elements have been altered in this version of King’s interconnected fictional world that includes MR. MERCEDES and maybe almost all of his other novels. Big spoiler warning to folks who haven’t seen the series or read the book - both of which we recommend.

The Cinemondo gang takes a long, pensive look at Brad Pitt in AD ASTRA. Written and directed by James Gray, it’s a trek across the solar system though struggles and troubles you might imagine would stand in the way between a man who feels abandoned by his father… if said father was on a space station orbiting the planet Neptune! Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones and not nearly enough Donald Sutherland in a space adventure that certainly delivers the special effects spectacles, but does it work? Did we care enough whether or not Brad finds his dad in the vast depths of space? Join us and find out what we discovered out there.

Was Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP a successful sequel to Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING? Did it pay respects to the book or the film or both? Or neither?
How does a filmmaker find the courage and the skill to make a sequel to one of the most beloved horror films of all time? Well, first you get the book that the author wrote as a sequel to his own film and you figure out a way to incorporate the written story with the filmed version - even if there are huge differences and even some controversy about what’s canon and what’s not. Join us for an in-depth examination of what worked and what didn’t.
