Kathy, Mark and Burk talk about coffee and the philosophy and engineering behind a good cup… and then we take a close look at a new film from Korean filmmaker Heo Jong-ho. The film is called MONSTRUM and it’s set in the 1500s during the reign of King Jungjong, but don’t let that turn you away… It’s a classic monster movie - as you may have guessed from the title, and we recommend you watch it before listening to this episode because we get into some spoiler territory near the end. It’s fun and somewhat political tale about a horrible creature plaguing the countryside.. or is it just a myth created to discredit a leader? We also reiterate our love for Korean films in general and recommend a few you shouldn’t miss.
SPOILER WARNING: This episode contains MAJOR SPOILERS which means important story details will be revealed. We always advise listeners to: Watch First Listen Later.

Kathy, Mark and Burk celebrate the spectacular all-star, all-singing, all-dancing 100th episode of the Cinemondo Podcast by talking about a hundred movies!! Almost. We take on a collection of top 10 lists of Hollywood films organized into categories and we go through them one by one and discuss whether or not we agree… and why. The classics are all here, of course, but there’s a few oddities in there, too. Some unexpected categories, too… and even a few films that (it’s hard to admit this) we haven’t seen! Wait… WHAT?! Join us for a trip through the history of Hollywood… we even talk about musicals!

Kathy, Mark and Burk take a close look at a low-budget film that takes us from the inner mind to the Paradox Theater. THE VAST OF NIGHT is a new film with an old vibe, and it proves that you don’t need a huge budget to tell an ambitious period story. This film is set in the late 50s and deals with the kinds of science fiction scares that were giving people the creeps in those days of sputniks and atoms and vacuum tubes. We’re introduced to a couple of young people who may or may not be listening in on communications from those people up there in the sky. It’s moody, contained and mysterious, and definitely worth a look.

The Cinemondo gang takes another trip to Paris to check out Louis Malle’s 1958 jazzy crime drama ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS. This one has everything you want in a noir film from the beautiful femme fatale Jeanne Moreau to the classic bad choices that lead to devastating mayhem, unexpected plot twists that take the story down tangents you never saw coming, tragic Parisian street crooks, spy cameras, grappling hooks and a haunting score by none other than Miles Davis. It’s full of cigarette smoke and guns and some super cool cars… and we love it.

Kathy, Mark and Burk do a deep dive into GOOD TIME, the 2017 film from Josh and Benny Safdie starring Robert Pattinson. It’s a great throwback to the gritty crime films of the 70s, and reminds us a bit of early Scorsese. Robert Pattinson keeps surprising us with the range he’s been showing in his post-TWILIGHT films. It’s almost making us want to go back and reassess those films.. no, never mind. But seriously Pattinson is doing some great stuff, and this one really puts him through the ringer. It’s a heist film that goes bad and it’s got elements of AFTER HOURS mixed in with the classic crime drama vibe. Highly recommended by the Cinemondo gang. Watch it before you listen to this episode.

Kathy, Mark and Burk dig into some more lockdown suggestions in the form of television. Does SUPERNATURAL deserve all that devotion? Is OZARK really all that? Or are you going to trust your friend at work who insists that GAME OF THRONES is boring because it’s all about goblins and witches and cute little gnomes, or are you going to listen to your friends at Cinemondo when they tell you what you should be watching? The old “binge watching” idea is great and all, but are you going to spend all that time watching an entire series only to find out that you hated it all along? There’s just too much out there to choose from, sometimes we all need a little help deciding.

Kathy, Mark and Burk talk about a few films you might have missed, and what the concept of “escapism” means in a time of quarantine. We’re recommending some slightly under the radar films like one Kathy recommends called THE ROOM, but not the THE ROOM you think! Mark tells us about a fascinating film called FREAKS that seems to have some relevance to present times, and Burk revisits a couple of classic science fiction films and discusses what makes great sci-fi.

We have talked about Mike Flanagan’s films (Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, Gerald's Game, Oculus) a lot over the years, so when he puts out a list of movies he’s been watching during the lockdown, we take notice.. and we totally steal it and do a whole episode about it. We go down the list and discuss our own opinions about these films, and guess what? Flanagan is right, these are some seriously good movies. Not all of them are mainstream or well-known and in fact many of them are low-budget, under-the-radar independent movies - the kind you should be spending your money on. Right? We want more of those, don’t we. Yes, we do. Here’s a great list - and we love lists, don’t we? Yes we do. We can almost guarantee that there’s a few here you’ve never even heard of.

The Cinemondo gang welcomes special guest, writer, director, producer Charles Hood. Charles talks with us about his film A NASTY PIECE OF WORK, a twisted and hilariously dark episode of Hulu’s INTO THE DARK. We also talk about his dark comedy, NIGHT OWLS, starring Adam Pally and Rosa Salazar. We get into the various inspirations and ideas that spark the creative process and we get the inside scoop on how someone goes from having a fun idea, to creating a script and eventually a producing a feature film. It’s not easy. Kathy, Mark and Burk are obeying the quarantine mandate during the present health crisis. All of us recorded our parts from our own homes. Stay Safe!

We take a close look at a strange, and very disturbing film, VIVARIUM, directed by Lorcan Finnegan, which looks like a sci-fi movie but comes across more as a horror film… but one with a bizarre twist. The monster isn’t what you might expect. We go into the Spoiler Zone here so make sure you watch the film before listening. And it’s the kind of film you should probably see before you hear anything about it. Strange stuff. Disturbing and dark. What are they filmmakers trying to tell us here? Stars Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg.
