We dig into SPUTNIK, a Russian sci-fi horror hybrid directed by Egor Abramenko. Cosmonaut Konstantin - the lone survivor of Russian space mission, returns to earth from orbit and brings along an alien parasite… and as we all know, alien parasites are going to cause trouble. It’s just how they are. It’s what they do. We love seeing films from countries other than the USA, and this is an interesting ride for sure, but does it live up to its potential? Great production design and some terrific performances and icky special effects carry us through this one, but join us for the discussion to find out if it’s a total success.

The Cinemondo gang takes a close look at some films on Shudder. HOST… a “found footage” style scare film directed by Rob Savage. Set in England the film is about a creepy Zoom seance that goes all awry with a malevolent demonic manifestation that could have been totally avoided with a little more respect for the Astral Plane (drink your shot now)… and a wonderfully moody film from Guatemala that’s hard to classify into a single category. LA LLORONA, directed by Jayro Bustamante, brings the Legend of the Weeping Woman into a contemporary setting and gives us a look into the family of a disgraced man known as “The General” who may or may not have been involved in a horrifying genocide. Guilt and retribution and vengeance play into this beautifully shot film where a family is confronted by their dark and deeply evil family history.

Writer/director Drew Thomas joins the Cinemodo gang for a fascinating discussion about his crime drama THE MONGOLIAN CONNECTION which he shot on location in Mongolia. Maybe you think that sounds easy and like no big deal, but you’d be wrong. Drew takes us through some harrowing production stories and proves once again that commitment to an idea and a good script can result in an amazing film despite near catastrophes and last minute recasting. Drew’s film is definitely a blast, and gets this episode’s Cinemondo “Watch it!” award. Starring Amarsaikhan Baljinnyam, Kaiwi Lyman and Sanjar Madi.

The Cinemondo gang discuss one of their favorite filmmakers: Brian DePalma. We take a close look at some of his classics like OBSESSION, DRESSED TO KILL, BLOW OUT and BODY DOUBLE and the ups and downs of his impressive career crafting sometimes impossibly complex films that almost demand multiple viewings. He gathers A-List actors like Michael Caine, John Travolta, Angie Dickinson, Nic Cage and Melanie Griffith to make his cinematic dreams come true.
He’s often compared to Hitchcock, or accused of stealing from him. He’s accused of indulging in gratuitous shower scenes and voyeur fetishes. He’s even been called “immature” but despite a few clinkers, his list of intensely watchable and fascinatingly twisty films is something we all agree on. His films are CINEMA at its more entertainingly engaging and finely crafted. You have to pay attention to all of the details and keep your eyes and ears open. Join us as we heap the praise on one of our favorite filmmakers, Brian De Palma.

WHAT'S THAT FILM?! Ever had a vague memory of a film from your past that you just can't place?
This is the debut episode of our special new podcast where Kathy, Mark and Burk investigate a cold case from special guest, Los Angeles artist and Kathy's husband, Chad Robertson. You may remember Chad from Episode 35 where we dissected Netflix's horror film about the fine art world, Velvet Buzzsaw. We discuss a film he half-remembers from childhood that has haunted him his whole life … a trailer on TV that scared him so bad he had to run out of the room. What’s the film? Can the Cinemondo WTF Detectives solve this mystery?
If you have a scene from a film that you just can't figure out send it to us and we will investigate the 'case' on the podcast. Write us at: [email protected]

Kathy, Mark and Burk get all mixed up and confused by Denis Villeneuve’s doppelgänger drama ENEMY starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal. What would you do if you discovered that you have an identical duplicate? Would you assume that it’s your twin or that some odd supernatural force had split you into two completely separate replicas of yourself? What if you had the same exact fingerprints and scars? There’s lots to discuss with this perplexing mystery, and lots of spidery webs of strangeness to decipher and decode and more than a few theories that may or may not explain what’s going on here. Make sure you watch ENEMY before you listen, because this is a film that’s best seen without knowing too much.

The Cinemondo gang with special Guest Lisa Fancher discusses Jaques Demy’s 1969 MODEL SHOP, starring Gary Lockwood. It is slice of life that still rings true all these years later and takes us on a trip down the streets and boulevards and avenues of Los Angeles, California. The city that stars in so many films, but which films about this city get it right? Which filmmakers really understand the appeal of this former desert that sprawls for miles in all directions? The broken dreams and the desperate souls who come here looking for fame and fortune and the invisible ones who find their own ways of paying the bills.

It’s Mystery Date time! Without dropping too many spoilers, each member of the Cinemondo gang brings up a film the other 2 may not know about. It’s a mystery! This time we look into some impressive early special effects makeup work from Oscar winner Rick Baker (in a film that might not be very special itself), THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN; a documentary about the early stages of making of a beloved sci-fi horror film; MEMORY: ORIGINS OF ALIEN and a unique hybrid genre film that has elements of drama mixed with super heroes and sci-fi, FAST COLORS. What makes us think these three movies are worth discussing?

Kathy Mark and Burk take a trip to the wild, sketchy side of town with Paul Hackett and Jeff Lebowski…. the persecuted heroes of Martin Scorsese's AFTER HOURS and Coen Brothers' THE BIG LEBOWSKI respectively. Two movies about characters who find themselves descending deeper and deeper into weirdness and suffering as they struggle to survive and find their way home. Do these movies still hold up? Are they time capsules? Are they realistic depictions of downtown artists, punk rockers, nihilists and the various underground types? Revisit hell with the Cinemondo gang.

Kathy, Mark and Burk welcome prolific actor, musician, songwriter and voice-over artist JOHN BISHOP to the podcast. John’s experience in film and television is legendary, and he’s got those fantastic Hollywood stories and tons of great advice. John’s been a part of countless film and television projects from GRIZZLY ADAMS (when he was 8 years old), through FLASHDANCE and GREY’S ANATOMY (Remember the 2-parter about the guy with the live missile stuck in his chest?), up to 911, LONESTAR and LONGMIRE. If you look up his credits, prepare for lots of scrolling. This guy is BUSY.
