CIO Podcast - Episode 17: Daniel Barchi on The COVID Experience and Military Leadership

Listen Later

For the 17th episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, we sat down with Daniel Barchi, Chief Information Officer at New York-Presbyterian.  Barchi has one of the most interesting backgrounds of anyone we’ve had on our CIO podcast.  His career started in the military and led to him being CIO of one of New York’s important healthcare organizations, New York-Presbyterian.

In this episode Barchi shares some of his experience and his staff’s experience during the COVID-19 outbreak and more importantly what they plan to institutionalize at their organization now.  Plus, they incredibly did an EHR go-live amidst the pandemic and he shares how that experience went for his organization.  Barchi also shares leadership lessons from his time in the military and his biggest struggle as CIO.  Plus, he’s an avid runner and so we had to ask him how running marathons can be applied to his work as CIO and health IT.

Here’s a look at the questions and topics we discuss on this episode:

  • What was it like being CIO of a hospital that was at the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak?
  • What changes from COVID are you working to institutionalize into your organization now?
  • How were your EHR go-lives impacted by everything happening with COVID?
  • What’s the role of the EHR in your organization?
  • Your education includes being a Brigade Commander at the US Naval Academy. What are some leadership lessons you learned in the military that you can use as CIO?
  • What’s your biggest struggle as a CIO?
  • You’re a marathon runner. Are there lessons you can take from running marathons and apply them to your job as CIO or to health IT in general?
  • Which piece of advice were you given that you’d pass down to future CIOs?
  • Now, without further ado, we’re excited to share with you the next episode of the CIO Podcast by Healthcare IT Today.
