ZEC said the delimitation exercise the drawing of constituency boundaries will run from June 1 until December 31. Voter registration will remain open at ZEC’s district and provincial centres, but any data captured after May 30 will not be used for delimitation. The process of demarcating boundaries is important in ensuring fair representation of the electorate, but the opposition is suspicious that ZEC whose impartiality has been questioned  could collapse some constituencies in its strongholds while adding constituencies where the ruling Zanu PF party is traditionally strong.

Areas with traditionally low voter registration like Matabeleland South, Bulawayo and Matabeleland North could find themselves with fewer constituencies, affecting citizens’ representation in parliament.

GOVERNMENT has hiked user fees at public hospitals by 1 748%, prompting analysts to warn of an upsurge in home deaths.

New adult and children consultation fees have been pegged at US$12 and US$6, respectively, which are an equivalent of $3 696 and $1 848 in the local currency using the official exchange of US$1:$308.

Hospital fees were last increased in January 2020, with adults and children respectively paying $200 and $100 in Zimbabwe dollars at the time. Following the directive, consultation fees for adults are now US$12 and children US$6. Ward fees for adults are set at US$12, and US$8 for children.

When the government decreed the first total lockdown and subsequent lockdowns people stayed home with any movement restricted except for essential service providers. The government launched a food relief program to aid people, especially the vulnerable in urban areas and the rural folk. Two years later as the Covid has receded villagers in Dete in Hwange District speaks out, that despite being eligible for the Covid relief program they did not receive any aid from the government. Dete has no reliable rains for villagers to depend on subsistence farming and it is located within the Hwange national park which makes agriculture unsustainable because of wild animals. The government is on record that it helped all the eligible groups of people, but Dete villagers do not recall receiving grants of aid and sometimes had to contravene some Covid 19 regulations to sustain lives. Villagers are now afraid that if another Covid 19 wave comes they will be stranded.

Hwange residents are complaining about companies which buss people from outside Hwange to work in the coal-mining town. Most of the local youths remain jobless regardless of the possible opportunities in many companies available. In most cases, the managers of coal mining companies and other related coal business companies are managed by people from Harare and Bulawayo. The influence of the management in personnel operations has been condemned by locals as, one which does not serve the interests of Hwange. Hwange residents admit that in some technical jobs they maybe not be qualified but they must be given a chance where they deserve it. However, Hwange natives have been not been considered for the middle management and even menial jobs which do not need education. Speaking to Community Voices, youths and other residents’ says job creation for locals needs to be addressed and not the current system.
