Since the opening of schools last month, teachers have been on go slow or on full stay away. Teachers have alleged that their employer, the government is not committed to their needs and welfare, therefore declaring incapacitation. With the majority of children in Hwange attending government-run schools, they have been affected. The opening of schools came after almost two years of disturbances in the education sector as schools were not spared by the Covid -19 induced lockdowns. Without much progress in schools, parents have turned to extra lessons so that children can learn. Most of the extra lessons are paid on a weekly or monthly basis in foreign currency. With the majority taking that route, some of the parents say they cannot afford the costs associated with extra lessons - a further blow to the future of children especially given that ZIMSEC set examinations regardless of teachers not attending classes.

Since late last year, Hwange is witnessing groundbreaking ceremonies and cutting of ribbons by the Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland North Richard Moyo and on a few occasions by other line ministers. The occasions range from roads rehabilitation, Hwange Thermal Expansion project, water plants, library and opening of new mines. All-terrain and Sport Utility Vehicles speed on the Hwange roads and have become a tradition. However, residents speak that, despite the visits and speeches about development, they have not seen much on the ground, a situation they describe as a waste of state resources by government officials. Hwange residents in some concession areas are struggling for water, and electricity and have poor roads. Worrisome to the residents is how officiated projects take a snail's pace and remain unfinished.
