  • 3143: Saturday noon at Niort
Niort, France lockdown sound recorded by Morgan Le Bot.
"We live in a small town in the west of France. For the moment, our region has been little affected by the pandemic. We are architects and work at home. In recent days I realize that I have more and more need to leave the door open on the street.
"Everything is quiet, birds, a few rare walkers and the open windows of the neighbours. It's noon, everyone is going to have lunch outside in their garden behind their wall... Hopefully we will invent more convivial streets after all that."

  • 3142: Morning birds in a small city
Lancaster, USA lockdown sound recorded by Jason Mundok.
"Since we've been mandated to stay home on March 19, 2020, my partner Anne and I have been working remotely in our dining room. We would have typically spent at least 10 hours a day in a coworking space that she owns and operates in our small city of Lancaster, PA, USA. Even at the start of our stay-at-home orders, I had a feeling we would be here longer than projected, so I installed a couple of bird feeders that been left by the previous owners of our house directly outside of the window where we would be working. It took a few days but the birds finally discovered them and each day I've enjoyed to seeing them fly around the yard and stop by for a meal or a snack. They are particularly active in the morning so I captured a few minutes around 6:40 am on Saturday, April 25, 2020. (The hum is the sound of a neighbor's HVAC system)
"Our small city has been closed for about six weeks. Like most places, the small business community is struggling and fearful of not being able to survive. My partner and I are both entrepreneurs and our networks are full of small business owners. We're doing our best to stay positive but the future is so uncertain that all we can do is take each day as it comes and try to make the best decisions as we go.
"On the positive side of things, slowing down has allowed me to pay attention to things that I likely wouldn't have during regular hustle of "normal" life. Connecting with the birds in my yard is a daily reminder to look away from the screens from time to time, sit quietly, and enjoy their songs."

  • 3140: Is it a bird, is it a plane?
Tel Aviv lockdown sound recorded by Sigal Getz.
"Typical lockdown morning. You hear birds chirping and IDF Air Force planes practicing for Independence Day air parade. Lockdown is challenging. Not being able to physically see and hug loved ones and friends is hard."

  • 3139: Birds in St Petersburg
St Petersburg lockdown sound recorded by Nadezda Nilova.
"We don't have total lock down, just self-isolation. So there are still a lot of people outside and many common sounds of the city - cars, shouting, steps, dogs. But anyway we can hear birds better now."

  • 3136: Apartment house playground at Kontula, Helsinki
Helsinki lockdown sound recorded by Anna Katariina.
"I live in Helsinki, Kontula at mass-constructed 60s residential complexes with my family, one child and my partner. We are in corona isolation lockdown and only hang around in the apartment and in the neighborhood area. There are a lot of green woods and big gardens all around in Kontula area. You can always hear bird singing and gardening sounds here in the spring. Now you can hear better the cars humming in the background and construction site sounds pop up from the soundscape more now when it is quieter.
"There are big town house areas near, and we hear hammers knocking and motors sawing and sometimes you can smell smoke when people burn their fireplaces or light their wooden saunas. I do not mind that. I think it fun because I used to live in downtown and these are new sound and smell environments for me and remind me of countryside living. It might be surprising to people that a lot of low-income residents, elderly people and people with ethnic minority backgrounds live here but the environment is very green with big forest areas and almost always noticeably quiet. Now even more quiet. You cannot hear children playing outside so much because of corona lockdown.
"I would enjoy outdoor trips with my family a lot, but I must work and study from home. That gives me lot of anxiety and stress. I hope that people can find a way to take it easy at home and have a quiet time by themselves when they need it."

  • 3131: Silence on Boars Hill
Oxford lockdown sound recorded by Cities and Memory.
"Oxford is surrounded by green spaces, small villages and quiet spots, which have become even quieter during lockdown. This recording is from a wild garden called Jarn Mound in a small village called Boars Hill. It's a moment of peace - having cycled for half an hour to reach this tranquil spot, it's the most peaceful moment of my entire week, so I reach for the recorder to share it with you."
