  • 2775: All aboard the Valparaiso ascensores
The ascensores in Valparaiso, Chile are famous mechanical lifts, more than a hundred years old, that are both an extremely practical way to get up the huge hills that dominate the city and a tourist attraction that shows off a distinctly old-school way of getting around.
This recording shows off their distinctive clattering sounds, which could only come from this part of the world!
    Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 2773: Whistle In Murcia
Murcia soundscape reimagined by Luca Guglielmetti.
"I imagined the piece as a mental composition of a woman walking in the street. The track opens with the sound of her steps and closes with them.
"This sound is the hook to reality, the rest is in the woman's head. I tried to give the idea of a mental scenario that is created and disintegrated within a few minutes, which is what happens to me when I listen to the soundscape and mentally reimagine it.

"At first I was annoyed by the clipping of the microphones caused by the wind, but then I thought that a creative way to exploit this problem would have been to turn it into a kick drum, and so I did."

  • 2772: Ridley flocks
Ridley Road market reimagined by Michael Lilley.
"I segmented the original recording and fed it into Endlesss (endlesss.fm) on my iPad before adding the tonally shifting underlying pads. I really liked the gulls midway through the original recording, so I used Koala (another iPad app) to add a spattering of the gull samples throughout the track. I also thickened the underlying pads using Koala
I finished the final piece using Audacity and couldn't resist applying judicious bursts of Paulstretch to bolster the pads some more."

  • 2769: Exploring China Town
Exploring the sounds of the China Town district in Bangkok - this is the main artery road of the China Town district, the main centre for trading by the Chinese community (https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Overseas_Chinese) since they moved from their old site in Bangkok some 200 years ago to make way for the construction of Wat Phra Kaew (https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Wat_Phra_Kaew) , the Grand Palace (https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Grand_Palace) . Yaowarat Road is well known for its variety of foodstuffs, and at night turns into a large "food street" that draws tourists and locals from all over the city. Recorded by Le Tuan.

  • 2768: Underground Karaoke Stars of Broadway
Ellen's Stardust Diner reimagined by Adriene Lilly.
"The recording felt like a space underground and I imagined walking through concrete halls to find it.
"I wanted to play with that sensation, like wandering down a corridor and pressing your ear to the door of every room only to find the sounds in side are all nearly the same."

  • 2767: The next generation of Broadway stars
Ellen's Stardust Diner is unique to Manhattan - an old-style diner where the waiting staff are all aspiring Broadway singing stars. Here are a couple of tunes, including the classic "Unchained Melody". Recorded by Cities and Memory, while enjoying a burger.

  • 2766: The Cosmic Gondolier
Venetian buskers and Giudecca canal reimagined by Mark Taylor.
"What if Venice and all its wonderful canals were lifted off the earth’s surface and became a floating metropolis in outer space?
"In terms of the sound world they create, I’ve always found journeys on water to be discrete and utterly disconnected from their immediate surroundings, so I’ve tried to create a more cosmic, outer space version of travelling by water!
"The first 90 seconds of the piece are 99% taken from the original field recording:
The opening waves of sound are taken directly from the original field recording – snippets of water sounds were processed using granular sampling and synthesis in two instances of Reaktor 6.
The outer space tinkles, clicks and beeps area combination of tiny vocal samples from the original alongside synthesis in Omnisphere.
The pad sound that enters at around 50 seconds was created from the accordion playing towards the end of the field recording – sampled and processed in two instances of Omnisphere.
"The original music was all created using Omnisphere."
