Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 2785: Natural suffering
Essen city soundscape reimagined by Jamie Frye.
"This piece was inspired by a musical tone within the original field recording. The natural xylophone in this extreme urban and brutalistic environment had a charm that which was the only thing that mimicked nature in this dystopian landscape.
"The original recording has no natural sounds which are audible, highlighting the fact we are driving ourselves into a dark dystopian future.
"My piece represents a synthetic city and the sounds it creates. I believed only using a synthesizer to mimic these layers represented the harshness of our robotic modern world."

  • 2783: Kota Masa Depan
AS Cittadella ultras reimagined by Fahmi Mursyid.
"I feel on the future city has more quiet and chaos at the same time. People know how to reduce or control the noise from everything with new technology. I composed this piece to reflect this idea."

  • 2782: Ultras on a boat
The away fans of AS Cittadella are travelling to a local derby match at rivals Venezia - being in Venice, we have to take a boat to this unique island stadium.
During the boat ride, as well as the vaporetto engines, we are treated to a display of all their most popular songs as the fans sing out of the boat towards the bemused citizens of Venice on the banks opposite.
    Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 2780: Shallow Waters
Valparaiso ascensores reimagined by Iván Aguayo.
"Last year I went to Valparaiso and while it's lively in some parts, the truth is there are a lot of worn out buildings in the surroundings.
"Somehow the sound of the elevators, slow and heavy, reflects the state of the older structures, as it started to decay itself along with the city.
"This influenced my composition, which is languid, heavy and industrial, as the city slowly decomposes."

  • 2778: Early morning on the Paris metro
This is a recording of Metro Line 14 in Paris from Olympiades to Saint-Lazare Station. The whole ride takes less than 15 minutes and I kept some ambient sounds from the stations before and after; the recording was made before 8.00 am between Christmas and New Year's Eve, so  there was hardly anyone on the train. Recorded by Jeremy Simoncello.
