Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 2725: After a certain point, it's mainly water and air
Jeddah airport, reimagined by Emmy Tither.
"I've always liked airports (because being there means you're going somewhere else) and I've always liked water (because you can look at it and believe you're going somewhere else).
"In a pessimistic future, a lot land will be subsumed by water, leaving our future cities as a landscape of mainly water and air, not much land.
"That's what inspired me, along with a hope that all of us will get along better then, because we will have to."

  • 2724: Christmas Market atmosphere, Budapest
"The winter holiday season is a busy period for everyone. Lot of sales going on in the shops and people use every possible way to influence others to worship at the altar of consumerism.
"Budapest, the city that exhales tradition from its very core is going through transformation. Change popped up its head in every corner and it definitely can be felt throughout this time of the year.
"Christmas markets dwell in the heart of the city and growing bigger and bigger every year. In December, 2019 Hungary broke the long time record of national consumption of electricity due to the high amounts of decorative lights. In the following ~10 minutes immerse yourself in the fuzzy atmosphere of Budapest's largest Christmas market.
"Approach the spot with public transportation that offers many alternative ways for your trip, let that be metro, tram, taxi, bus or you name it. Mulled wine stands and concert stages provide warmth for the visitors in the heavy cold.
"Crowds flowing through the narrow alleyways making noises so loud, that previously observable natural sound can not find its way inside. Is this really the way we should change?"
Recorded by Abel Reti & Peter Jasz.

  • 2720: Echoes
Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge sounds reimagined by Bill Stevens.
"I decontextualized and doubled the length of the original field recording to take on the characteristic of water while adding musical content in the additive/subtractive minimalist style of Terry Riley while incorporating the phase technique of Steve Reich to represent the movement of trains.
"The piece begins with a poem, Echoes by Australian poet/musician Neil Morris which speaks to me of the history of New York City, the echoes of footsteps of my ancestors as immigrants, pioneers, explorers, artists who are present if we are only able to take a moment to just listen; those that we must never forget as we walk the same streets, ride the same trains, respect the water that surrounds us.
"This history is always present in the echoes of their footsteps; like our footsteps today and those of the generations to come."

  • 2717: Build and destroy
Paris street hockey reimagined by Delia Racheru.
"It’s the beginning of time...  the land is empty and all you can hear is the wind... People appear, they are building a city, you can hear cars, the horns and the wind transform into music, the music becomes chaotic and finally aliens emerge from underground. ( Piece entirely made from the original sound up to 1:51 when a kick and snare was added; DAW used : Ableton)"

  • 2718: Ein Zufälliges Glück
Berlin Sudkreuz station reimagined by Vlad Suppish.
"I do love Berlin. Been there twice, at Südkreuz Bahnhof as well. Was waiting there for my girlfriend to arrive by bus. I was slightly nervous, because the bus was running late and couldn't find precise spot for arrivals. Asked a random chap for help, he was from Australia and also was looking for buses but for departures instead.
"Together we've found the spot, had a nice chat with him, met my girlfriend and all the worries evaporated. And I had some great time in Berlin, as always.
"Lots of happy accidents and good memories. Hence  the name of the piece is "ein zufälliges Glück" - an accidental happiness.
"I've decided against taking an obvious path (i.e. techno) but to make it a bit like my 'guilty pleasure' - Berlin school electronics only with rather modern sound.
"For me it reflects the nature of Berlin - rich with history but very modern and vibrant city of the future."

  • 2719: The industry your well-being relies on
Denver bus depot reimagined by Daniel Balogh.
"By the sounds of the changing cities, the environment changes too, so I decided to reflect on that.
"I believe we from the first world owe for the comforts we have. It's good to stop from time to time to feel gratitude for the things we usually take for granted - they may not always be given."
