Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 2705: Here come the gas salesmen!
A unique, fascinating sound - trucks full of gas bottles drive around the hilly streets of Valparaiso, Chile, selling their wares to local residents.
To attract their attention, they drum out complex rhythms on the side of the gas bottles, which reverberate around the steep streets of the city - a defining sound of "Valpo".

  • 2704: Born, never asked
Kurama Dera temple reimagined by Giovanna Iorio.
"The sound we produce when we pray is mysterious. Words disappear and we become the sound we produce. We try to connect to the ONE who created us, with one big question in mind...
"I discovered a very interesting piece of music on UbuWeb by Laurie Anderson, called "Born, never asked" and I felt it could be an interesting combination. After all, we pray sometimes because we never asked to be born."

  • 2703: Inside Kurama-dera Temple, Kyoto
Inside a Buddhist temple, with kneeling worshippers praying in unison. Because the temple is open to the outside, you can hear temple attendants outside picking up the autumn leaves and sweeping the courtyard. Recorded by Giulia Biasibetti.

  • 2702: Future drowns present
Prospekt Mira station reimagined by Bleep Eater.
"I kind of left the stem untouched and drowned the overall mix with the concept being the present  becoming drowned by the future."

  • 2700: Uneasy Night
Piazza Campitelli reimagined by Martin Juenke.
"Because the original recording was so inspiring, I created two separate reimagined tracks: 'Tranquil Night' and 'Uneasy Night'.
"I used the constant dropping and improvised / composed something corresponding. One track creates the peace of a night, the other the unrest. Both are based on the same dropping rhythm which has been derived from the field recording (and treated with harmonizer, delay and reverb)."

  • 2697: Remote Control Locomotives Operate in this Area
The title and inspiration come from a signpost in the rail yard (courtesy of Google Earth). The sign reads “Remote control locomotives operate in this area; Locomotive cabs may be unoccupied.” The future is already here!

The drum beat and snare sound are constructed from the field recording, whilst the other percussion represents the train wheels passing. Rail yards can often be quite deserted and so I chose a lone saxophonist to be playing after the early harmonica.
