  • 2716: Street hockey by the Seine
A group of young men are playing street hockey in a disused public space outside the Air France HQ on the banks of the Seine. We are only yards away from the Grand Palais, Petit Palais, Les Invalides and some of Paris' iconic river bridges, and yet this space has been reclaimed for urban sport. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 2712: The plight of the urban bird
It's well documented that urban birds are forced to change how they sing in order to try and cut through our awful human-made city soundscapes. The original recording is a classic example of birds chirping at a high pitch, their calls desperately poking through holes in the soundscape between car horns, sirens, pedestrians and the dreadful throb of constant engine noise.
The reimagined piece sets out to help our little feathered friends recover - first of all, some EQs, compressors and wideners come in to cut out some of the traffic noise and make the bird calls more audible.
But that's still not enough - the birds are still really struggling to make themselves heard, so we give them a helping hand, gradually replacing the din of central Paris with the aid of some birds from a more tranquil setting in a country park, until eventually the city has disappeared, and the birds are finally left alone.

  • 2711: The birds persist even in difficult circumstances
Recording from the corner of Place de l'Hotel de Ville, Paris by Jack Regan.
"People speaking in French, beautiful clear bird calls (it's dusk), car horns, engines, footsteps, sirens building up and getting closer, the siren sound is very different to the London one I hear every day."

  • 2709: Tuk tuk boats passing by, Hoi An
Boats pass by with loud, chugging engines alternating between fast and slow speeds in Hoi An, Vietnam. Recorded by Marcel Gnauk.

  • 2708: The Irish Pile Driver In Isolation
Piledriver sound reimagined by Elizabeth Joan Kelly.
"I attempted to situate myself in the brain of an Irish pile driver operator as they momentarily transcend into a few moments of tranquility. I only used the original field recording in this piece--no extra sounds. The dangers of noise pollution are ongoing and severe, particularly for construction workers. With this work I hope to model how urban "noise" can be made more palatable."

  • 2710: Tuk Tuk Vietnam
Vietnamese tuk tuk boats reimagined by Simon Woods.
"The rhythm of the ‘tuk tuk’ sound dictates the rhythm of the piece. The kick drum, organ, snare and bass are all constructed from the sound of the ‘tuk tuk’.

The vocoder was input with the words “tuk tuk tuk tuk” whilst the output is completely different!"

  • 2706: Valparaiso Gamelan
Valparaiso gas salesmen reimagined by Andy Billington.
"The original field recording has so much movement, spirit and depth. I wanted to retain this.
"Working solely on a Teenage Engineering OP1, I sampled the original recording and made drum kits and synths from it. I then re recorded parts playing the drums and synth samples live adding more layers.
"In a moment of serendipity a bass line was accidentally arpeggiated across the piece which also informed more glitch patterns, synth drone and hypnagogic gamelan."
