  • 2511: AS Cittadella vs. Cremonese

  • 2508: Menyanyi
Reimagined by Richard Watts. Part of the Three Words project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/three-words
    "Menyanyi means 'sing' in Malay.
"Not easy to come up with something that sounds like 'ketchup' but evidently the word comes from a Malay word so I used some Malaysian sounding instruments. I took 'finely' as meaning chopped so there are some chopped up melodies in the piece. The last part is supposed to represent 'cities'."

  • 2510: Museum Collage
Part of the Three Words project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/three-words - using the three words Flag, Sport and Public.
A few different factors were used to create this piece.
    1.    Male and female voices are made up from the software Vocaloid. The phrases are all connected with displays that have been in the Liverpool Museum over the last few years. ’Rainbow Flag’, ‘Sport for All’ and Public Transport. I added overhead railway as it is one the best displays and once upon a time the overhead railway went quite near to the present site of the museum.

    2.    The short synth sequence of notes that follow each phrase are made up from the letters of the phrase using a simple code. A to G are A to G# (G# made it a bit more interesting). H to N is A to G# again. O to U repeats this pattern and so on.

    3.    The phrases also follow the same code of notes.

    4.    The museum has had on display equipment from OMD and so I used some vintage equipment of my own that probably should be in a museum. Akai S200 and S612, Cheetah MS6, Mattel Synsonic Drums, Yamaha DD5 and EMU Classic Keys. Sadly, my Yamaha CS01 gave up the ghost.
    Reimagined by Simon Woods.

  • 2509: Behind the Museum of Liverpool
Strange air conditioning hums pervade the otherwise still air late at night behind the museum of Liverpool. There's no one around, and the atmosphere is weirdly unearthly. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 2506: Something that is going away
Venetian bacaro reimagined by Philippe Neau.
"I used "shin and withdrew". I'm trying to create something that is going away (withdrew, withdrawn) thanks to the background sound (the voices, the accordion) and I've placed some "shin" (as splinters" like voices, muffled sounds) in order to break the withdrawal and to rhythm the piece . The whole remains relatively abstract..."

  • 2504: Ritual and ecstasy
Sheffield Wednesday vs. Wolves reimagined by Nick Harpley.
"I found my response to the sound was not to try and prettify it and make it  "musical" but to find a way to celebrate the passion and energy of the original source more directly, so it's more like a focusing in than a transformation out.
"So I decided to use only the original material, and to draw out the ritual and ecstatic qualities, and the feeling of waves of energy, through quite simple (I had thought) repetition and modulation in the time domain (pitch is scarcely touched) of extracted elements. I decided to use the length and format of the original, and the melodic and motivic elements could only appear once they've occurred in the original timeline."

  • 2503: Football in a freezing winter
Recorded by Cities and Memory. On a bitterly cold December afternoon, the snow pours down on Hillsborough football stadium as Sheffield Wednesday are beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1. We hear the freezing crowd, chanting, shouting and urging their team on, and the sounds of the match below us.

  • 2502: The vaporetto mind-cleaner
Vaporetto ride in Chioggia reimagined by Cities and Memory.
Riding a vaporetto can be a surprisingly intense experience - at full power, standing on the exposed rear of the boat, the engines absolutely roar, drowning out everything else you can hear. After a relatively long stretch with the engines on full, when they cut to half or zero power, it's as if the entire soundscape has cleared, and your mind feels fresh and newly-alert to the sounds around it that have now been revealed. You can hear again!
This reimagined piece is an exaggerated version of a vaporetto journey - the thrum of the engines has been manipulated into an intense low-end battering, absolutely brutal, and when the engines cut to low power, the light synth lines that start to play represent this "cleaning" of your hearing - a wonderful experience.
